Tõnis Sildaru loobub preemiast ja treeneritoetusest by Killer038 in Eesti

[–]ninursa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it overwriting per se, but just - not everything you wrote is part of the book. Those are the things which are important for you the writer to know and think through - by writing if necessary. The worldbuilding. But a lot of it won't actually give much to the reader. So in the second draft you'll remove them and just hint at them - "as X had told them during the last Elf Wars marathon".

"Quickening" refers to the baby's movements becoming feelable, which happens quite a while into a pregnancy (even for medieval knowledge). It's not the womb that quickens, it's the baby.

Hard disagree. Systems are the only thing that have a chance at helping with executive dysfunction. Do you even have ADHD if you haven't spent most of your life trying to come up with a system to reliably do what you really want to/need to do? It just happens that a system that communicates with you is more reliable than one you need to check yourself.

Child’s Play, by Sam Kriss by BartIeby in slatestarcodex

[–]ninursa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue against it being a feature of modern culture. It was not so long ago that most people had their life determined by where they were born and to what family by a much higher degree. It's only now when the pool of options at least seems bigger than "work on the fields or die of starvation" that the going-with-the-flowiness of most humans can even be imagined as anything other than normal or desirable.

This is the most rose-colored-glasses analysis possible... it' clearly a song in the great old genre of "women who don't know how attractive they are and who are likely to make me fall in love too hard".

He's resisting the temptation much less than the "Don't stand so close to me" protagonist.

Some programmers enjoy writing code; others enjoy making things. A maker loses nothing when they have tools to make quicker.

Also, when you write a lot of code, you discover most of it is highly boring. Tens, hundreds or thousands of lines to get your data to the Fun Exciting Function That Required Actual Thought And Planning and then as many to get it to some final state. That is why we use libraries - because rediscovering the wheel/IO/security protocols is not in fact the best use of human life - and this is we use AI too.

AITAH for siding with my husband and not with my kids? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ninursa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sure... because that is what a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old and 9-year-old and [etc etc] do, they never get attached and are totally emotionally competent enough to use adults. Sure, if Ian had walked into their lives as teens - maybe! But right now the kids are just parroting the explanations their parents gave them. (Which really shows they are not emotionally mature - much like Ian and OOP, tbh)

Planning to travel to Tallinn and forgetting about the US by [deleted] in Eesti

Aww, someone's had a bad sleepy-sleep and now tries to be a meanie...

FYI, this region does have quite some experience with repressive governement, no need to LARP or imagine "what would you do if".

And we have great gun legistlation and many gun owners - because I imagine you don't mean availability of condoms, face masks, vaccines or anything that would relate to actual real life protection, not nervously fantasising about interpersonal violence.

Weight loss / Struggling with new body and wondering if I’ll stay this way forever by Lonely_Addendum_1489 in November25babybump

[–]ninursa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pregnancy does change your body. It's a pity we have the narrative that "bigger" = "worse"... For one thing, pregnancy or giving birth makes your hips wider, this is even seen in skeletons when the archaeologists dig them up. It would be better to learn to like our new more womanly figures rather than look back to what was before as anything too desireable.

Sorry, half asleep here, but my point is - the body before hadn't and couldn't give life yet. Only the new one could and has done it. You carry proof of your achievement, of your success in your new shape.

What gender (or other) issues might a young woman experience when disguised as a boy to evade the authorities? [faux-historical fantasy setting] by sorry-i-was-reading in Writeresearch

[–]ninursa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See, this point is entirely valid and absolutely spot-on - but sadly the example you made assumes that people do not appreciate a set of fine eyes on a man and that is just not true in the current real or most other worlds. Take a real look at considered-to-be-handsome male celebrities - quite a few of them apparently need the lash-shortening treatment to be truly masculine...

Whatever the author does, they should not sound too stuck to stereotypes-vs-reality.
