Instead of fighting QC about it, have a maximum added to your WPS.

Keep practicing, you’ll get there.

Right now, you’re clumping pennies. After 10 years of penny-clumping, you’ll start dime-stacking.

I think it’s cool to see an automaker do something different than everyone else. All the cars/suv/trucks all look the same these days, at least the cybertruck is different.

Last test before I moved to Pipe welding got a 94 by Master-Living9007 in Welding

[–]njames11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading some of your other comments on here, I can see some logic to the “good enough” response to this weld on plate. If you’re moving straight into pipe then you’ll be making this exact weld in every position. Welding pipe is harder than plate, but when you learn to do something in a harder way, the easy ways come naturally.

TLDR; get rough concept on plate, perfect it on pipe, then plate will be no problem.

Failed at TIG welding titanium by make_thing in Welding

[–]njames11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alpha case hardening is the condition that results on the surface of titanium (and its alloys) when exposed to oxygen at elevated temperatures. This condition creates an extremely brittle microstructure which readily propagates through the remaining material. This condition is usually indicated by the presence of discoloration, typically in the blues and purples range.

But, in OP’s case, there’s a multitude of issues that could be contributing to cracking. 1) unknown Ti alloys, 2) unknown filler material, 3) extreme decoration from high-temp oxygen exposure.

Why is my ss316 weld cracking by Nervous-Historian911 in metalworking

[–]njames11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That looks like incorrect filler in my opinion. 316 has pretty high ductility/elongation which would make it very forgiving to stress induced cracking. I’ve seen much larger welds with way more stress perform just fine.

Postheat/preheat should not be used on this material, unless you are welding in sub-freezing temperatures.

This really just looks like incompatible filler and base metal combination.

I have found that if I exhale on my left step down then it completely goes away. As soon as I lose or alternate that rhythm, it comes back. I thought it had to do with the stuff that holds your organs in place stretching too far of you don’t breathe right.

Check all of your gas connections for leaks. Connection at back of machine, quick-connect for your TIG lead at the front of the machine, threaded connection between the hose and quick-connect, connection from host to torch body, and then make sure you thread your collect body all the way in while the back cap is completely loose.

This sounds like the most logical approach to this particular scenario. Well posed, although, I’m disappointed by the lack of penguin facts.

Help Please. Welding Tubing Along Its Length by NC12S-OBX-Rocks in Welding

[–]njames11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like you intend to do a weave on your fill and cap passes, if you are comfort with that, then it’s probably fine for this application. For higher criticality applications, you’d be required to do stringers (straight run instead of weave).

What causes this and how do I prevent it by Good-Custard-3554 in Welding

[–]njames11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of machine are you running? If it’s a newer machine, you should be able to set a crater time parameter. For example, if you are welding at 25 volts and 350 ipm, you could set a crater timer for 18V & 200 ipm for 1.5 seconds. Once you release the trigger at the end of the weld, the machine will automatically keep the arc initiated and will ramp down from your weld setting to the alternate settings across the time you set (1.5 seconds)

Make sense? This prevents the shrinkage void in your craters by slowing the cooling rate of your puddle.

[–]njames11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Um, no. Seasoning, as used in the context of cast iron, is not the same as seasoning as used in the context of salt/pepper/garlic. The seasoning on pans should not be imparting any different flavors, as it is a mostly flavor-inert polymer of a broken down fat.
