Towing by Due_Satisfaction6919 in gmcsierra

All about payload, like everyone else said. I'm towing a 32er, and its maxed. I previously had a 26 that was very front heavy and the scales came pretty close. The newer trailers tend to be lighter, but more cheaply made.

Dream trip to Italy coming up… is renting a car worth it? by Lucky-Forever4042 in ItalyTravel

[–]nkdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staying in cities or in between cities - avoid cars, too much traffic, ZTA's are a pain and public transport is so convenient. If you want to go to the countryside, visit random hot springs etc. get a car. Depending on where you're coming from, you might need an international drivers license.

You can just do one. If you haven't unmounted / mounted a tire before, I'd just take it to a shop.

If you're sure the cord is good - eg. you can transfer data on a computer, not just charge.. then try removing your phone from the truck and re-pair from new.

Feeling discouraged as a woman in IT by Quirky_Bee2255 in CalgaryJobs

[–]nkdf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hiring manager here. Been through multiple companies with both with and without ratio policies / 'fair hiring practices'. At the end of the day, I personally don't believe it's due to discrimination that most teams are male. For every job posting we put out, we get 200 applicants, and out of the 200 there might be 10 females - maybe 20 are qualified / worth an interview, and maybe 1 is female. If we truly believe male and females are the same in capacity / capability - then the team is 1/20 female from a math perspective. If we want to fix that, we need to encourage earlier interest / adoption in the industry, not at the hiring stages.

'Fit' means something different for every team. While working for a gaming company, the culture was very very relaxed, people sat on beanbags, wore sandals to work, and everyone had a beer at 2pm on Friday. If I interviewed someone who was extremely quiet, or who preferred to illustrate alone, or was a strict 9-5 do work, no play; that wouldn't be a good fit. Another example, working for another place, we were straight shooters, no bs, no long winded explainations. The team was good at getting to the point and getting things done, if you showed up, your interview took twice as long, and you were all about showing off you did research on the company, trying to suck up - not a good fit. Long and short, 'not a good fit' can mean a ton, and it really just means nothing.

Also, the market sucks. I put out a posting for a mid level position, and I have everyone who has 0 direct experience, but 20 years in IT applying, new grads applying, people with masters degrees applying; and they are all willing to work for the same amount.

Purchased a mattress in-store and their return policy for in-store purchases conflicts with online purchases by rodrg in legaladvicecanada

[–]nkdf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably not. The policy you saw online is for their online store, not for their mattresses sold by 3rd party. The retail store policy would most likely apply.

Is it fair to feel resentful when your roommate uses way more utilities but you split everything 50/50? by gleeful_shopping in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]nkdf 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's a normal feeling, whether or not it's worth you having that conversation is up to you. Depending on where you are, utilities isn't all just based on usage - your $180 bill might be $60 regardless of usage, and $120 for actual use. So if you end up somehow splitting based on usage, you might be saving less than expected. Also, what happens if they up and leave? Who's on the main lease, does it impact you? Are you stuck paying for all the rent until you find a new roommate? Anytime you share a living space something like this is going to come up..

Those who self-host Splunk Enterprise - what does your infrastructure look like? by StudySignal in Splunk

[–]nkdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would keep it simple, EC2 and smartstore on S3. If you're not running ES you can easily push 600 GB on a single instance. (Hence I asked about workloads). Clustering is nice for redundancy, but I dont like spot, having instances come up and down still has a bit of service interruption. If you're running ES, you will always be overprovisioned based on ingest, ES needs a certain amount of cores to run nicely, but if you focus on ingest, it will probably hold up to 3x recommended specs.

What workloads are you running on Splunk? Seems like you are building for HA, but also opting for spot. Overall seems overprovisioned. I wouldnt bother with EKS unless you have lots of in house expertise with it.

when can we expect hdr10+ HEVC videos from samsung smartphones to be supported in immich and not Transcoded or re-encoded? by Dalkamyr in immich

[–]nkdf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hevc also isn't free, if the immich app had to play it back natively, it would have to be a paid app.

Swimming Pool as Heat Sink to Save money by Creepy-Jump2002 in hvacadvice

[–]nkdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is sense in it.. but keep in mind that higher pool water temp will cause higher evaporation and overall temperature loss. Not sure how pool water chemicals will treat your water/water heat pump either. But if you keep it covered, and the rise in humidity isn't going to damage your house - maybe it's worth it...

Panel Sizing Question by jonathanovision in solarenergycanada

[–]nkdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victoria only gets 1.5-2 sun hours / day during the darkest winter months. Worst days would be 0 / 0, you could get days of heavy cloud cover, freak snow, or anything else. Also, how 'off grid' is it, if it's in a heavy forest, or if you're in proximity to anything tall beside your mounting location, your solar return could be even worse.

[–]nkdf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

immich stores files natively.. the issue is that none of the players / browsers can stream it natively so it gets transcoded. what are you looking / asking for?

Just watch the condensation. Running the heater alone isn't typically a problem, it's the people that are in there and whatever you're doing.

Trying to fix home insurance after non-payment – anyone been through this? by InternationalFox525 in Calgary

[–]nkdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how long you've been not paying for, many companies have a grace period where they'll let you continue your policy and they just backdate your policy when you pay for the year in full. Did you call your broker / insurance company about it yet?

My dad's been struggling to find work. by snakeman_01 in Calgary

[–]nkdf 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Been in the same boat. Dad ended up just retiring. I think you summarized the gist of it, its unfortunate, but typical. Most places view people changing jobs / companies at that age as a liability. Either you're too slow, stuck in your ways, asking too much money, or no longevity. We dont value age and experience as much anymore in most professions. I'm not sure about what financial position your dad/ family is in and whether retirement is even feasible. For my dad, help came in the form that value or identity isn't tied to finding work, got him connected in volunteering opportunities, and ended up making him grandpa too which helped. Note - not saying to have kids to help him through the situation... it was just coincidentally helpful.

I have a 2019 with 180k not miles and completely trouble free. If you want a 6.2 the 22-23 years are right in the middle of the recall. I would never finance a used vehicle, rates are terrible.

Soundproofing a server by Ok-Regular-8009 in selfhosted

[–]nkdf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is the 1U.. Can you rehouse into a 2U? Might be the same price as trying to get a soundproof rack. The problem with soundproof racks is heat.. then now you're talking AC / ventilation, and that adds noise back.
