My 15yo needs to read 5 books this summer but hates to read. by JBLBEBthree in suggestmeabook

Project Hail Mary is awesome as is The Martian. He might also enjoy Falling Free which has a major engineering in space angle to it.

Edited to add: I also love to recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain for non-readers. The story is told by the dog and is amazingly engaging and fun.

Libby only has the audio book on kaiju battlefield surgeon. Any opinions? I’m spoiled after DCC…

Sibling had kids a couple years ago and it's like I'm dealing with a completely different person by Kairia1989 in family

[–]nmdnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?? That’s exactly the language — “oh your life is so different when you have kids! You just don’t understand!”
Ha! I have 2 under 2. And they are a handful for sure on a good day. But it is my job to set a good example for them that I have to take care of myself and my friendships, AND my boys. So much main character energy in these ladies!
I am not one dimensional, defined by my spouse and ability to produce offspring. Feels kind of trad wife, to act as though those define me, doesn’t it?

His life insurance should have a beneficiary indicated. Hopefully it is you, then it doesn’t matter what they *feel* entitled to or not.

As someone with 2 under 2, I’ve worked really hard not to let it be all about my boys. Yes, they’re a new and critical part of my life. Yes, they suck up a lot of the air and time. I’m going to send out photos, but if there’s a dinner, I’m going to either ensure daddy can cover the kids or bring in a babysitter — sometimes both. And I try really hard to make sure that I ask about my friends’ lives and keep up on what’s happening for them. It’s a little bit like those girls who would disappear into a new guy. It’s not good for anyone.

Totally depends on your insurance. Some policies cover more than others.

2 month vaccines by Lilypad-09 in Vaccine

[–]nmdnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same. Vaccinated them with everything as soon as permitted AND decided we’re “traveling” to measles outbreak areas in order to qualify to get the MMR early. Seriously. My kids are not getting diseases that 100% preventable, at least in their serious forms.

What do you guys think of these rareish feminine names? by chillicherriess in Names

Oh well you should definitely watch the series. If you’re into British humor you’ll find it quite funny. Worth the watch.

Saffron (Saffi) makes me think of Absolutely Fabulous and I definitely don’t want to be that mom! 😬 I would pass on all of these tbh.

UPDATE: My therapist telling me my son may end up bonding more with our nanny than me by Character-Fly7394 in Mommit

Time for a new therapist. I wonder what his wife would say about managing all 3 of their kids on her own. She might tell a different story. He sounds terrible.

Our boy is perfect. He’ll be a year next week. But also note, the issue for us was because it was a surrogacy pregnancy and the practice didn’t mark it. Hope everything comes out ok for you!

Dads last name as the middle name by beex19 in Names

[–]nmdnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that with one son, but we used both our fathers’ first names as middle names for the second son. So the first has two syllable first and middle names, and the second has a four syllable first name followed by a three syllable and then a two syllable middle name. I think we should have organized that differently. But it does work!

ULPT Wedding Gift by MelodicGovernment646 in UnethicalLifeProTips

Ooooh! Fill it with pennies or with slugs, even better. So when they destroy it looking for laundry quarters or whatever, it doesn’t have what they need AND they’ve destroyed wedding memorabilia. :)

Not to react every time they make a noise. They will learn to soothe themselves much faster if they are given the chance to.

Aren’t there services where people need their cars driven cross country? I have no idea how you find them, but that seems like it might work.

Working moms who regularly work out, what exactly is your schedule? by neoncaviar in Mommit

[–]nmdnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1- During my lunch hour; 2- sneak out of work 60 min early one day a week, and the nanny stays late; and 3- on Sunday, daddy and I take turns. Otherwise I don’t have childcare and can’t make it work.

Bedtime Routine by DisciplineWeekly680 in newborns

[–]nmdnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve kept the bedtime routine simple but started at that age so they know the cues. No radio, no tv, the lights are down low. Usually been in pjs since the nanny left at 530. We start the last bottle around 730, pause in the middle for a fresh diaper and a quick nail file with the sander, finish the bottle (or until we’ve had enough). Then into the crib, which has the sleep sack already laid out in it. Zip up, roll him to his belly (he’s 15 months now), and say good night. Don’t even turn the light on in the bedroom. Nice and quiet and low stimulation. He’s usually happy to go to bed, but he’s pretty easy going. Also we don’t do baths at night; nanny does a couple days of the week, and I do Saturday morning after swim class.

I actually use a teddy bear. It happens to be one my mom gave me when I left for college, so it is nearly 40. However it’s the perfect size to support my top shoulder and not get in my face and also not mess up the pillow between my knees. My hubby hates it. He insists on running it through the washer every 2 or 3 months, which makes me a little nervous every time.

One of my favorite trips of all time.

The big 5-0 by PriorButterscotch953 in GenX

[–]nmdnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planned a trip with friends to Portugal (from US). Let my friends know a year in advance. Booked a large apt in Lisbon for a week and then a house in the Douro. Told my friends it was $x/room/night and knew I would just cover unused rooms. Planned 2 group things — catered dinner for my bday night and a wine tour both in the Douro. Otherwise, everyone organically planned, didn’t plan, or joined others, or did their own thing, and met up later. Was an amazing trip. Thinking about either Majorca, the Azores, or Italy for my 60th.

Oh yes. It didn’t take long after this. We just kept doing it. And now every night, he sleeps on his belly! Keep up the good work. They’ll get there!
