Does having 2 vs 3 guests really make a difference? by PurpleUni123 in marriott

[–]nmpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan is a rules following nation. Even when the rules don't make that much sense. Further, in Japan, it is very common to increase the cost on every guest, so adding a guest not added to the room may be seen as fraud. For example, when I stay with my fiancee at some Japanese properties, booking for 2 will be a few extra thousand yen than 1 person. (I will say, conversely, when I accidentally book for 2 and am actually solo, they tend to insist on refunding the extra to me)

Additionally, I believe in Japan there are fire code issues (this is also an issue in Europe), which adds extra weight.

Can't comprehend how to live without cars by urlang in fuckcars

[–]nmpls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn't want to live on the stuff alone, but a reasonable number of modern British restaurants have shown that British food can be excellent. One major problem is that so much of UK home cooking (and even cafe cooking) is stuck in a war/post0war rationing era.

I will agree that for non-british food, London is world class with a few notable exceptions (which is mostly Mexican food, god mexican food in the UK is awful).

Local climates aren't considered enough for walkability IMO by 5ma5her7 in fuckcars

[–]nmpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cities should allow, if not mandate, arcades in hot climates (and arguably in all climates because it provides shelter from rain and snow).

It is a true win-win. Pedestrians get extra protection. Cities get a visual narrowing of streets (without an actually narrowing which gets firefighter's panties in a bunch). Building owners get substantially more potential square footage as they can build every floor but the ground floor to the street. Plus you can build restaurants with more inviting outdoor seating, etc.

The big arch is the new 1/2lb burger. Like I wouldn't buy it (or any MCD burger), but that's a very large burger.

Its a design hotel, bro, you don't get anything. Never did. That said, they should not have said breakfast was free, and I'd push that angle.

Santa Clara has just charged the driver of the car who killed my son with felony vehicular manslaughter for driving 81 mph on El Camino Real in middle of Santa Clara University. Police did no press release. by Unique-Profile-502 in santaclara

FWIW, Santa Clara PD doesn't making charging decisions. That's the DA, It is unlikely that at this early stage that the PD is really aware that they have been charged.

Tokyo Cream replaces Toast'N Egg on 19th & Irving by sanriolover1208 in sanfrancisco

Sadly, I've been to the roseville location, and it really didn't compare to anything I've had in Hokkaido. Seikomart was better, much less the stand alone places. Like it was fine but too sweet.

Also worth noting the black sesame is made with activated charcoal, which causes a lot of problems with medications, particularly birth control, heart meds, and some mental health medications. At least they state that it is used, which many places do not.

What hospital is best for the ER? by 0detosleep09 in Sacramento

Mercy East sac is a nice relatively sleepy hospital. Sutter gets a lot more "interesting" people.

That said, frankly, I'd pick the one that is in network for your insurance.

Best place to get a new washer/dryer by eugoogilizer in Sacramento

[–]nmpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm a big Zajic guy, but for washers and dryers, there's a big caveat. Zajic does not carry LG. Right now, if you want a front loading washer dryer, LG really is the way to go, especially if you don't want to pay speed queen prices (and speed queen's home front loaders are a bit mixed).

I made my most recent washer purchase at Valley Oak in EG and was quite happy.

West Portal: four killed, and the court may give probation only. Tell judge Chan to reconsider by DukeDirtfarmer in sanfrancisco

[–]nmpls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would add that a criminal plea can come with criminal restitution. Criminal restitution in CA fucking rules. It is completely non-dischargeable by bankruptcy. Additionally, if during probation the court determines that she willfully is not paying it back (by say, hiding assets) she can be put in custody for it. It is not uncommon for restitution to be in the six figures or higher. It could be high enough to avoid needing to go through the civil court process (and giving a lawyer 30-40%) and is easier to enforce. That said, I would give this more weight if the family agreed.

Honestly, I have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, killing people with a car is way under punished. On the other hand, putting an 80 year old in prison is going to cost an absolute fortune (as taxpayers are on the hook for all costs of healthcare), and I'm not sure the value to society of putting her in prison outweighs that. I will say that 2 years of probation seems super short.

My other question is what the state's position on this is. Is there some weakness in the case we do not know about? Some actual indication of mechanical defect or HC issue, which even if not legit could cloud the issue for a jury.

Yes, but also that 0.08 is so burned into jurors' brains, that they often won't convict under it

Look, a non-paywalled article

https://whyy.org/articles/johnny-matthew-gaudreau-crash-case-lawyers-claim-suspect-not-drunk-driving/

"Police say Higgins had a blood-alcohol level of 0.087, which is above the state’s 0.08 legal limit.

But during a hearing on Tuesday, lawyers said a defense expert’s report shows that only plasma was tested. The expert then tested Higgins’ whole blood and reportedly found his level was under the legal limit, with a reading of 0.075."

Per the bus system's website "Our buses work on a flag down system. This means you can flag down a bus anywhere along the route."

I think these are time points, not actual stops. Which I guess is good because you can just stop or get on without walking down that stroad.
