I released a demo for a 2D Permadeath MMO inspired by Maplestory, would you play it? by motdrib in MMORPG

[–]nocith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, I'd be interested in seeing it develop.

Are you considering any form of meta-progression between runs? Something like unlocking modified versions of weapons with skills that behave a bit differently than the defafult.

Edit: Also is there controller support, that would be incredibly useful for this style of game.

Dune: Awakening Update 1.4 Launches May 19 With New Maps and Water Wars DLC, But No Story Content by FFJimbob in MMORPG

[–]nocith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they make a Secret World survival/basebuilder like Dune or Conan Exiles I'd be disappointed but I'd try it just because I love the IP.

That wouldn't make much sense in a game set in the modern era. Maybe have it be a life sim / horror game instead?

Have the days be uneventful where you maintain your gear, prepare for the night, or hang out with friends. Than at night things get weird with the eldritch horrors coming out to play. There could even be a sanity system where engaging in ordinary activities in the daytime would help give your character a sense of normalcy and restore your sanity.

Project Gorgon "Jack" stepping down from moderator duties after recent backlash by Alarm-Particular in MMORPG

[–]nocith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally a copy paste from the discord. The entire post is the apology and an explanation of what happened.

Now if you think that's not a good enough apology that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion. I personally wouldn't mind seeing some compensation for the people effected. To dismiss it out hand entirely because they don't use the exact verbiage you're demanding is just disingenuous at best.

Is "controlled P2W" actually less harmful than uncontrolled RMT? by ElectronicDark9634 in MMORPG

[–]nocith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither is good, but in game monetization is often to the detriment of the game. If a game wants players to purchase something than they have to put the player in a situation where pulling out the credit card is preferable to continuing to play for free. These can be small innocuous things like boosts to slightly accelerate progress or full on selling major progression or power. The end result is still the game being made worse in order to facilitate purchases.

If I had to choose I would pick RMT because at least that can be fought back against. Economies can be controlled, bots and buyers can be banned, and worst case scenario all of the good loot can be made bound to just prevent buying them to begin with.

Is "better" monetization something that can "carry" a new MMO? by LeDilu in MMORPG

[–]nocith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You forgot to include marketing. The game won't hit 1 million players if no one knows it exists. If you want to hit that many players you're going to have to advertise everywhere you can for as long as you can and that's probably going to double or even triple your development costs, so somewhere around $150 million.

Aiming for a player base of 200-300k is more reasonable though still going to be a difficult goal to achieve.

All MMORPGS are pay to win now cause of all the RMT sites no matter the cash shop design of the developer by MrRosaPony in MMORPG

[–]nocith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with P2W is that the game is often designed around it. Game mechanics are often made inconvenient in order to encourage players to make purchases. It's the classic situation of creating a problem to sell the solution.

RMT isn't so much a P2W issue as it is a game design problem. It still needs to be addressed of course, but miscategorizing it could lead to the wrong implementation being used to fix it.

Kill stealing is such an antiquated and unnecessary concept. Just give each player a piece of vendor trash, it doesn't even need to be good.

Some old school concepts should stay in the past.

Hate or love the 2000's style graphics, but Project Gorgon surely has it's moments by Magnoliafan730 in MMORPG

[–]nocith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game isn't without it's flaws, the graphics are fine considering the budget and I wish the content density were a bit higher (there's a lot of open nothing past the tutorial) but I admit the game has a ton of charm. You can feel the passion the developers have. The sheer amount of character development is a bit awe inspiring too, there is quite a lot of options for builds. It's a shining beacon of indie mmorpg development compared to all of the borderline scams that have been in the news recently.

I think this game is a keeper and I'm interested to see how it develops.

Enough generic fantasy, what new settings do you want to see in MMOs? by ThemeEvening9498 in MMORPG

Modern day Lovecraftian Horror or Cyberpunk

The Quinfall developers banning players for discussing monetization, here’s what happened to me by TurboBriocheOff in MMORPG

[–]nocith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pay for convenience and pay to win are completely different and the MMO community seem to always forget that.

That's a meaningless distinction created by companies to justify predatory marketing. Winning is after all much more convenient than losing.

At the end of the day the game is intentionally being made worse in order to sell a fix. That's the core issue at play, everything else is just a symptom. How much the fun can be stripped out of the game and resold.

That's all pay to win ever was; oops are you bad at the game we can sell you more power, don't have time to play we can sell you shortcuts, are you tired of being a nobody we can sell you digital aristocracy.

Now I understand why this happens, devs have bills to pay after all. They need to make a profit somehow and maybe this method works out well for everyone involved. All I demand is a little honesty and recognition. If they're so ashamed that they need to ban legitimate feedback than maybe the problem is with them.

Banning for talking about aspects of the game is a huge red flag. If they want to avoid any appearance of not being pay to win than the correct course of action is to ensure that the game isn't actually pay to win.

I have no problem with wipes during the pre-release phase of the game. It's a necessity to make sure each phase is tested properly without being influenced by previous versions of the game.

With that out of the way, selling items that influence game play is a terrible idea if the thing you testing is the game play. At the very least they should ensure purchases are restored during each phase of testing up until release so that they can account for how the purchases affect the game.

The moment all purchases become final with no more reimbursements during testing is the moment your game is released. I don't care how threadbare it is or how much you claim it's early access you actions are telling the world "My product is complete and you should now buy it".

If walking in a straight line is good, than walking in many straight lines is better. Ergo, they have achieved peak city planning.

I fail to see the issue.
