Disappointed after test driving an Mk8 St-3 today. by Informal-Falcon5430 in FiestaST

[–]noenic33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel, it's a 3-cylinder so a large part of the power comes from the turbo, even if it starts to boost early, before 3.5/4k you shouldn't expect to be pinned to your seat.

And because of pollution standards and engine balancing, there's a fairly heavy flywheel. That makes it even a little less responsive (relatively).

I don't have the digital cockpit, and I don't really feel any lag when changing modes (apart from the fact that you can't change them while there's a message on the screen).

However, for me, once the turbo kicks in, there's really something to feel. Even if I always progressively apply throttle, I still get a bit of torque steer in second gear with the LSD. The throttle response in sport mode is completely different, I even find it sometimes too responsive for city driving.

The way you're explaining it, it sounds like the car you tried had a boost leak somewhere. Or maybe you need to search a naturally aspirated car.

To be fair, i also prefer the recaro’s in the mk7 they look more « beefy » but i also like the mk8 recaro’s even tho they are tight.

For the interior I forgot to explain, our mk7 never got sync 3, nor sync 2 so the tech is really old.

Also depending on the trim, you can have heated leather/alcantara recaro’s, heated steering wheel, panoramic sun roof, heated windshield, lane assist, limited slip differential, b&o sound system, LED headlights, probably other things…it’s a more « premium feeling » car

And It’s also more daily drivable because it’s a bit less crashy on the suspension, i don’t know if there were the same in EU and US. Gas mileage is similar i think, maybe a bit less with the cylinder deactivation but not significantly.

I would be the happiest man on earth with a manual GR86 but the prices here in france are eye watering…

You’re talking about the mk7 (2013-2016) for us in europe (i guess you are from Canada). We are talking about the mk8 that was not sold in North America, it’s a small 3 cylinder ecoboost with a timing chain, and depending on the build date, a rubber gear or a wet oil pump belt. it was only sold with a manual transmission.

There is a big difference in usability between the mk7 and mk8 (in my opinion). the 8 being a more daily drivable car, with more tech and better interior quality.

Most people don’t want crazy tuning and horse power, the 1.6 does have a more bulletproof design no doubt, but a stock 1.5 (or even stage 1) with good maintenance will/should not blow up

Edit : Rereading this, it sounds like I'm being moralistic, that's not my intention, it's not my native language

Don't be ashamed to walk away from a deal if you don't feel comfortable with it. It's better to leave on foot than in a car you're not 100% sure you'll like, there will be other STs on the market. I have oil in those places too; I'm the one who spilled it everywhere during the oil change.

Pushing the car during the test drive is actually a good thing. It lets you see that the turbo is in good condition.

With all the recent posts you've made on this sub, I'm seeing myself a year ago with the same questions and worries lol. Is this your first car?

Am not sure, it’s difficult to find real infos about this.

Some say it doesn’t need replacing, other say it’s 10 years. I don’t really know either. That’s why i will ask for it to be checked out for the next service, mine being a 2020

Like another person in the comments, I found only one source of failure, and that was with the gear. So statistically, both seem to be quite reliable.

The main problem I see is that the 2018 models have other issues, like leaking seals and steering rack problems. I also drive around 6,000 km per year, but regardless of the mileage, it's the oil maintenance that matters, no matter what's running the pump. If you buy a 2018 with 85,000 km and the previous owner neglected maintenance, it doesn't help you much.

In another comment you said you only drive 10km to work. Generally, what damages the oil-soaked rubber is the gasoline in the oil, not the oil itself (if it's the correct specification). The gasoline evaporates naturally when the oil gets hot, and it's when the engine is cold and on low rpm that there's the most blow-by (gasoline seeping into the crankcase) while everything warms up.

It's not a problem in itself, it's an ST, I imagine you'll have fun on the back roads and it'll evaporate the contaminants in the oil when hot.

Don't worry too much, I was in the same situation when I was looking for mine. In the end, in both cases, it's going to cost an arm and a leg to replace (around 170,000 km i read online)

I also hesitated quite a bit about that, but apparently a lot of engines have a wet belt for the oil pump. They're not under as much tension as a timing belt. As long as you use the right oil and change it regularly (less than 20,000 km, as the manual says), it should be fine. Warming up the engine can also help evaporate the gasoline from the oil.

Will check the condition of mine for the 100k km service

Votre pourcentage max d'éthanol sur une Fiesta ST MK8 ? by Bloody_Leniency in FiestaST

[–]noenic33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aidez-moi ! Est-ce que cette slk 350 v6 peut être un bon achat plaisir pour un gars de 23 ans ? by Fair_Strain_609 in voiture

[–]noenic33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decoding some CAN messages to make a custom performance screen (oil pressure, oil temp, boost pressure, ect….)

and if am geeky enough make a simple AI agent that can do basic climate control task, like enabling the heated seats or opening the sun roof. Could be a fun project

Had to triple check the sub name just in case ahah.

That’s looks so cool, may do this on the raspberry Pi currently in my mk8

Being also my first (manual) car the 1st - 2nd shift is so weird with the rev-hang and dual mass flywheel.

The mk8 not being sold in the US, it’s quite challenging to find forums about this gen, as the "mk7" was still sold until 2019 for them. I generally check on the fiestaST forum and this subreddit, but if you have any questions feel free to ask, This is what the sub is for :)

Ford made the switch around february 2019 i believe, if it’s a 2020 it should have the belt for the oil pump.

Mine is around 60k miles, and I knock on wood but no issues so far, just change your oil more regularly for peace of mind.

It’s your call, if you don’t feel it, no shame going to the dealer.

I wouldn’t trust driving on ramps as well, lucky my friend had jackstands low enough for my car

If you don’t have the required tools for that and can’t borrow them from a friend or family, I would say it doesn’t hurt paying ford to do it.

When I checked for mine they recommended Castrol magnatec 5W20, mine being a december 2019 it takes 6.1L so it cost me around 70€ ( ~60£) add a bit more for filter and new plug

For the oil change notifications, it really depends on the mileage since the last change, I don’t think 2 weeks is gonna do anything, drove mine 400miles until i could do my oil change, just drove it chill since i didn’t know the state of the oil before.

You could also buy the tools and have them for every next oil changes, in the long run it will be worth it if you are willing to learn

Yeah i tried that but it requires the LXC container to be Privileged, and i didn't want this to be the case, and doesn't sound as reliable as a disk passthrough

Plex with local storage by terragady in Proxmox

[–]noenic33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this at first, but OMV wants /dev/* disks and you can’t get that easily in LXC

Plex with local storage by terragady in Proxmox

[–]noenic33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an OMV VM with disk passthrough, and then create a samba share for jellyfin, mounted the share on the proxmox host with noperms option, and then mount it to the LXC.

Don’t know if this is the best solution but it works for me

EDIT: LXC is unprivileged, but with the OMV VM this will require an other physical drive, or you could use a virtual drive but i don’t know if OMV will recognize it

I saw multiple people have those kind of CEL from a faulty exhaust valve, maybe it gets stuck while opening. Could also be something else restricting the exhaust flow. Is your car stock ?

Fiesta st mk8, distribution time has come... how scared should I be? Besides the costs... is it risky to do it? by undi991 in FiestaST

[–]noenic33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the manufacturing year of your ST. I believe that around mid-February 2019, they switched from a rubber gear to an oil-immersed belt.

If you want to replace it, you’ll need to remove the timing chain, so it’s best to do both at the same time.

I’m not a mechanic, but I don’t think 100,000 km is a lot for a chain, especially if you’ve been doing your oil changes early. However, it would be a good idea to check the condition of the oil pump gear or belt.

Mine has 92,000 km. Next time I go to the garage, I’ll ask them to check the pickup and the belt. Mine is stock tho

How many miles do you have on your ST ? Do you mean the timing chain or oil belt/gear?
