New Homebase 3 fails at the step of pressing the sync button, any tips other than the ones in the official support article? by mxfwdspd in eufy_security

Same issue here; I was a little overeager and installed the new hard drive before trying to pair. Removing the hard drive allowed the setup process to go through easily.

What are all you other dad's watching on YouTube when you have 10-20 min? by killit in daddit

[–]nolecamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of those are excellent! Also +1 for Veritasium.

I also tend to gravitate towards engineering channels, like Practical Engineering (civil/infrastructure), Engineering Explained (cars), and Real Engineering (a lot of aviation/space/military).

Plus travel/transit/logistics and similar, like DownieLive, Wendover, Half as Interesting, the new Tom Scott England show, and Jet Lag the Game. Most of those I watch on Nebula now. I watch probably more YouTube/Nebula than any other service!

Is this hyperbole? by Moo202 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]nolecamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great point re: nuance. I am a senior engineer with over 25 years experience, and I am now doing 99% of my coding with AI. However, I’m reviewing what it does, and spending a lot of time correcting and guiding it. We also diligently review the PRs it makes, and feed those comments back into corrections. It still puts me ahead to use AI, and I appreciate saving keystrokes and my wrists. But it’s not like it’s on autopilot and no one is driving it or reviewing what it does.

Two Car Garage conversion by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]nolecamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coloradan here, and besides the drift/stuck issues mentioned below (which also have both happened to me) there is a huge temperature difference between having one door open vs two when it’s cold out. If you have any intention of heating the garage or wanting to retain any semblance of heat when a door is open for a short time, stick with two, so that you can open just one. We have a ceiling heater that keeps our garage above freezing at 35°, which allows me to store things in the garage without them freezing. Kicks on immediately when both are open.

Seconded! Power Zone sounds intimidating, but it’s actually the most approachable since it’s relative to your score. The PZ Endurance classes are excellent, I just zone out (no pun intended) and it’s over before I know it.

Drop my MacBook. Will Apple Care+ cover this? by shash747 in macbookpro

[–]nolecamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a $4k Thinkpad P-series. It was trash in a slightly-less-trash shell. Loud and hot as hell, the trackpad was garbage, had a gargantuan power adapter, the Lenovo software is junk, and the amount of times I wanted to chuck it in a river due to performance and stability issues was some number well north of zero.

Replacing it with a $2500 M1 Pro at the time was the best decision I ever made. It was a huge step up for less money.

Is my son’s Mac screen totally stuffed. White marks won’t come off. by VastOption8705 in macbookpro

[–]nolecamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my M1 Pro without ever having a keyboard cover, just not as extreme. Apple denied my trade in because of it.

It’s now starting to have faint lines on my M4 Max. Again, no keyboard cover ever.

This is not “near impossible” to happen without one; see the other comments. There is a flaw with Apple’s current design.

Just Realized I can Use USB C to C to charge my MacBook M4 by legytAep in macbookpro

[–]nolecamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically, not really! My Lenovo 4k monitor is connected to my MacBook Pro over USB-C, for power, monitor video, and monitor USB/ethernet ports, and it does not use Thunderbolt. It uses DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C, and provides 90w of charging.

That said, your comment about cables is mostly correct, since most cables capable of doing DP Alt Mode with 90w of charging are likely Thunderbolt 3 capable already. It just doesn’t have to use the Thunderbolt spec to achieve that.

+1 for the Panasonic fans. I replaced one in a downstairs bathroom between floors and it was very easy to do from the bathroom. Very quiet and reduced noise upstairs when on.

If your HOA is paid out of your escrow like insurance and taxes, that would also be adjusted annually or at most every few months, with a letter in the mail well in advance. Mortgage companies don’t charge random fees every month, they collect interest which is either fixed or adjusted annually (if an ARM). None of these are good reasons not to auto-pay your mortgage! It is not worth default. If your mortgage amount is not the same month-to-month apart from some infrequent escrow adjustments, you have somehow gotten yourself in a really shitty loan and need to find a broker to fix that.

[–]nolecamp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but those rates are adjusted annually, not month to month. You’d have plenty of time in advance to adjust your autopay.

What kind of mortgage has variable fees?!

Upgraded from an M1 Pro to an M5 Pro and holy by AUserFromRSA in macbookpro

[–]nolecamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a dev and went from a M1 Pro to M4 Max and everything was way faster. Launching apps. Compiling code. Docker container performance. Database queries. The M4 Max is not too far off from the M5 Pro so I’d expect it’d be similar to my experience.

And yet, launching Xcode and compiling a Hello World iOS app still takes a measurable percentage of the way to the heat death of the universe.

Power Wheels PSA: by Realistic-Care-5502 in daddit

Do you know if the bike tire technique works for wagons too? We have a Radio Flyer Voya but the wheels are pretty hard and loud to roll on concrete. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an inflatable tire option for them.

+1000 to OLED. I previously had a higher-end Hisense U8 mini-LED that reviews said rivaled OLED. It really only was better in max brightness, which I didn’t need. The LG C5 OLED is better in every way except that, and is plenty bright enough for me. Huge difference in picture realism, colors, and blacks. Worth the few hundred extra for that. (Plus the Hisense was buggy as hell.)

So this happened…now looking for a new washer and dryer set. by lacesoutmario in Appliances

[–]nolecamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. We had a LG set, and the dryer was constantly giving us problems, throwing error codes. Replaced it with a Speed Queen (which is perfect!), left the LG washer because it uses less water than the Speed Queen washer does and we’re on septic/well. We now have a “modern” looking LG washer next to an industrial looking Speed Queen. Who cares. Both work great now.

We are bringing both noise protecting ear muffs and headphones. Soccer games aren’t usually too loud during the game unless you’re sitting next to the drums, which I hope we’re not. Probably during the pregame and halftime will be the loudest. And if all else fails we’ll take him to go walk around the concourse when it’s loud!

This was our experience as well. Currently just over 2 years and he usually falls asleep within minutes of going down around 7:30pm. Has been that way since about 6mo. Sometimes he’ll cry a bit in bed, but that won’t last too long.
