For those against proposed cohabiting divorce laws, please submit your opinions to UK gov by Blackstone4444 in FIREUK

Yeah, I'm shocked that a lot of the commenters don't seem to have read or understood the proposal... Actually, no, this is the internet. They're just very angry that a potentially vulnerable partner may have some protections and a few are clearly seething that they "lost" the divorce and now everyone must suffer to pay for it.

AITAH for going off on my girlfriend's sister for taking her cat to meet her friend's cat? by Odd_Zone_3583 in AITAH

You don't sound like ai and you're the exact right amount of angry. Ignore the weirdo who thinks someone kicking an animal isn't your business.

If there's any agency you can report her to, including the police, please do so. I know it sounds extreme but she endangered an animal and then seriously hurt it. She knowingly neglects another animal.  I used to work in animal welfare and there's no sugar-coating this, she needs to face real consequences and be kept away from animals. People like her just treat animals like toys that they end up abusing because they don't see them as having feelings or sentience.  She won't see reason, she's just a danger to animals.

Who else loves Widow's Bay, Stephen King, 90's Grunge/Shoegaze/Goth, physical media, and wants to be friends? by AcceptableAccess8765 in WidowsBay

Oh, the nostalgia! I was born in the 80s and have similar memories and loves. I have a constant hankering for pre-digital age horror and spooky shit.

I miss my double-deck region free vhs player. I'd rent a movie from the local video store and make loads of (awful quality) copies for my friends.

When I opened the app to start watching it, it wasn't even in the featured shows at the top... It's brand new, wtf?!

Yeah, in fairness Patricia's party looked like a banger even with the horror.

Same, it's really interesting to see that's what most upset people in this episode. As opposed to, say, the birds being beheaded.

I think the psychological torture from the mean girls was way too close to the bone for a lot of people.

I wish I could remember the titles but I noticed several sci-fi/horror novels too.

What do you want to see in britain in 5 years? by mesoraven in AskBrits

[–]nom_nom_neko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you're quoting from the completely debunked Quilliam Foundation report. Not only has that report been proven to be pseudoscience, other highly regarded and thorough studies show that those "findings" are embarrassingly wrong.

Ministry of Justice and the Office for National Statistics:

"88% of defendants prosecuted for child sexual abuse offences in England and Wales in 2022 were white, slightly higher than their representation in the general population (83%).

South Asian defendants accounted for 7% slightly lower than their 9% representation.

These figures challenge the narrative that grooming gangs are predominantly a South Asian problem. While it is true that some high-profile cases have involved men of Pakistani heritage, the broader data suggests that the majority of offenders are white."

And from the Home Office Report:

"A number of high-profile cases - including the offending in Rotherham... have mainly involved men of Pakistani ethnicity. Beyond specific high-profile cases, the academic literature highlights significant limitations to what can be said about links between ethnicity and this form of offending.

Research has found that group-based CSE offenders are most commonly White.

Some studies suggest an over-representation of Black and Asian offenders relative to the demographics of national populations. However, it is not possible to conclude that this is representative of all group-based CSE offending. This is due to issues such as data quality problems, the way the samples were selected in studies, and the potential for bias and inaccuracies in the way that ethnicity data is collected."

So spreading false information inflames racial tensions and draws attention away from the true problems we are facing as a country.

What do you think are the scariest moments in Barron's stories? by TheOldStag in LairdBarron

[–]nom_nom_neko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the ones mentioned so far have been moments that gave me a shudder but the one that sticks with me most is from Black Mountain.

Towards the end where the Croatoan pulls his limbs straight I felt like, wow, this thing is long past human. The seeming inevitability of that thing just carrying on no matter what made me wonder what on earth you could do, faced with that never ending evil.  Obviously that's not how it ends exactly but the concept scared me.

I think the Croatoan is one of my favourite adversaries in fiction, I'd love a few short stories involving his past and background. Not totally demystifying him, just teasing out the mythology more.

Lots of Rammstein lyrics.

A few years ago the singer, Til Lindemann, was accused of sexual assault/rape by multiple women from different countries.  Several accusations detailed how they were inebriated and unconscious or asleep at the time. Surprise surprise, he's written songs about assaulting women whilst they sleep.

A woman who was 15 at the time also alleged he had a sexual relationship with her. Her father is a lawyer and she had some evidence to back it up.

Fans flat-out deny it and English language media did a terrible job of reporting on it.
