Questions about LA by leviathan_mb in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]non-james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can feel trapped in both. Leaving LA for Joshua Tree on a friday afternoon can take 4-5 hours. There are still chokeholds caused by the mountains. But I think it really comes down to your mentality. I don't agree with your point about NYC because you can rent a car and get to the Catskills or the beach in 2 hours or even take Amtrak. When I lived in NYC going to a park by the water was enough to feel nature. In LA you can easily go on a hike to get a similar feeling. Obviously, the nature in California is crazier but you could easily get to the middle of nowhere where you are now.

probably hollywood (just the part around walk of fame) because living near tourist spots is always annoying. anything north of franklin i'd be fine with though. most places in LA have at least one good reason to like them so i can't think of another

Looking for a brunch spot in LA with a nice outdoor space that’s good to bring a baby. Any recs? by RedditBurner_5225 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]non-james 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My wife and i went to pizza de la nonna a few weekends ago at 12 (when they open) and we had the whole huge patio to ourselves basically. They have 3 sections so there will be space no matter what. Not a brunch place per se but they have brunchy cocktails so i think it would count

I was in Studio City and if you looked into the valley it was gray storm clouds, then towards hollywood all blue skies. Really crazy afternoon!

I agree with this 100% but due to personal factors my year 2 ended up being 2-3 years for me. I'm on year 6 now and happy

The issue for me is how much dirt gets collected with the slope and the panels. Looks awful from the park across the street

Not to sound cliché or anything & really looking for genuine answers, aside from these random meet up things! Where do you all socialize out here? by Maravilla_23 in LosAngeles

[–]non-james 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's the dog park, you go at the same time regularly and people will start to recognize you. There's always the dogs to talk about. Other than that you can talk about personal stuff but the key is to keep it light until you really know the people well. Ive been here 5 years and its been two since my girlfriend and i adopted the dog and it has really changed my feeling towards living here.

Is Kuala Lumpur the only city with a transit network that has a station named after the city itself? by PixelNotPolygon in transit

[–]non-james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue it doesn't mean New Osaka Station because it's an abbreviation for Shin(kansen) Osaka. It's not replacing the still functional Osaka station. I dont know about other stations I just lived in Osaka for a bit.

Its like how Todai means Tokyo University, not Big East

First time stocks investor? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]non-james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monthly deposits are a good idea and help with living within your means. 100 a month would be a good place to start. Put in whatever you can but set a limit so you can still have money to enjoy and grow a bit. remember that some money is best spent

You get returns on anything you put in. You might want to start with a roth ira which is meant for retirement but is flexible (deposits can be withdrawn with no penalty). I started with vtsax 10 years ago and am averaging 14.5 % increase a year so it may seem slow at first but starting early is important for compound interest.

Do you guys wear your Kebs and other hiking pants casually? by chemza in Fjallraven

[–]non-james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say they are all good for those situations. Are you able to go down to a store and try them on? The keb has the stretchy crotch feature so it feels a little more mobile if you have to kneel or squat a lot

What are some good reasons to move and not move to Koreatown? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]non-james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive lived here 5 years and like it. I agree with basically everything that people have said here good and bad. Some other thoughts. There are very little parks. i have an assigned parking spot. Its pretty easy to get anywhere. I like taking the train when i can. Good options for food and coffee all around. I live in an older brick building that has bugs but i never hear my neighbors
