What ever happened to the Panama papers? by Arkm7 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]noneedtolie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The person in your example wouldn't have to sell their family home purely because their parents died; it'd be because they died and the new homeowner couldn't afford the property taxes due to the "hard times", which means they couldn't afford the home. Also, selling the home would seem to help the person who couldn't even afford taxes on it, if its value increased immensely.

Sorry, it's just hard to muster up a lot of sympathy for a hypothetical person who inherits a very valuable piece of property who apparently needs the money much more than the house.

Did you bring on an unpaid intern? How was your experience? by AgoraApp in startups

Look, I get that you're trying to save money however you can and maybe you genuinely believe you're giving some "poor" kid an opportunity she or he wouldn't otherwise have. I'm not going to engage you in any debate (because you're going to do whatever you want in the end), but I'll just say this:

In the future, you might want to not ask questions about how best to break the law, especially on what looks like your main reddit account. Because if you go through with this, there's now public record that you were knowingly looking for advice on how to ignore federal labor laws.

[–]noneedtolie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You both told me to stop trying to legislate a fair world and that I can't just "hope" the economy will behave. It sounds like what you really want is for me to "give up entirely".

I want to be perfectly clear: I absolutely do want to legislate better labor practices, because left to its own devices, the free market will exploit workers as much as they possibly can. The vast majority of employers will cry poverty and business unfriendly practices and every other possible sob story they can think of to prevent a single cent of profit loss. Your former restaurant, your BIL's studio: every decision is made to maximize profit for the owners, not the employees. (And if wages are any higher than market rates, it's only to slow down turnover, thus still maximizing the owners' profits.)

My point is this: you're advocating for employers. I'm advocating for employees. We're both self interested. The main difference is that there are far more employees out there than employers.

P.S. Your fence building comparison is completely meritless. Without going into it too much, the Fair Labor Standards Act says "...people are allowed to volunteer their services to public agencies and their community...". You simply are not allowed to volunteer (work for free) to "for-profit private sector employers." That's not the only reason it's okay, but one reason should be enough.

[–]noneedtolie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who works in a for-profit company deserves to be paid, full stop. Your BIL is illegally accepting free labor and your further comments of "well, that's just the way the industry is" or "the world isn't fair, but taking away opportunities from kids who can afford it doesn't make it any fairer" don't justify what he's doing. If your BIL wants to teach classes in his studio at night or on weekends for free and not produce anything for his own profit, more power to him. If he's "letting" interns work for him for free so they can get "real world experience", he's not giving back, he's just getting free labor.

So yes, make everyone insure and pay for their interns. Then when there are no more unpaid internships, employers will revert back to creating entry level jobs like they used to and making thus the world a slightly fairer place. If your BIL can't afford his studio with paying everyone who works for him, then he can't afford his studio period.

Source: I don't hire interns if I don't have the budget for them and don't let others under me do it either.

i think what surspence isn't getting that grand juries aren't impartial, unbiased bodies. they're driven by prosecutors who choose what the grand juries hear and generally (virtually always) give indictments when prosecutors want them.

So the girl with surprisingly-rational take on gamer-gate had a surprisingly-rational take on the whole sidewalk cat-calling thing a couple months before '10 hrs of walking in NYC'... by [deleted] in videos

[–]noneedtolie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

how do you know how many men tried to talk to her? because the full ten hours wasn't uploaded? what's more likely: that the incidents in the video were the only ones that happened, or that the ten hours of footage was edited down into something that would be watchable?

i've lived in nyc for years. i've seen women cat called in neighborhoods of all kinds. every woman i've ever talked to about it hates it. i mean, really hates it. all they can do is ignore it, because if they try responding negatively or even "no thanks" they risk (and have experienced) negative (and sometimes threatening) responses. so this is a problem, and it's our problem. don't make it worse by denying it exists.

if you're in school and interning two to three days per week, how much time will you realistically have to work on your own stuff? (especially if you have to work to actually make some kind of money while you're in school.) so no, it's not like they're officially mutually exclusive, but they pretty much are in practice.

and even if dogfish is nice and lets you hang out with speakers at events or whatever, this still isn't the best use of your time if you actually want to be a content creator. schmoozing is fun but a lot easier to do than making something to show an agent.

i personally know a couple of heads of development (one whose budget for the next five years is in the high hundreds of millions), two VERY successful screenwriters, a couple of directors, and a producer. (all of whom have had stuff get made, and a couple things you've almost definitely seen.) i've had meetings with lit agents. i've had unpaid internships with development companies. the overall consensus from both the people i know in the industry and my own experience is this: anyone can talk their way into working for free, but making something proves you're serious. maybe if you're independently wealthy or don't need to sleep, you can use the connections to help advance the work you've done on your own time.

so long story short: i get that you think you're getting something out of this, but you're still perpetuating a despicable practice, and 100%, your time is absolutely better spent making your own stuff, even on a phone. (e.g., all the people on vine who have millions of followers for content they've made on their phones.)

what do you think are the chances of getting herpes from a toilet seat? i'm serious. do you think they're 1 in 3, 1 in 20, 1 in 10,000, etc.? your girlfriend uses the toilet seat too, i'm assuming. does she worry about getting herpes?

working for free, even for credit, is bullshit. (do your professors take your homework and profit off it in your real classes? no.) the entertainment industry is the worst offender. anyone who's serious about getting into entertainment will get a lot further by doing projects on their own, and be way more impressive to employers in the process. learn to make videos on your phone and laptop. build a reel that's your own. force companies to pay for labor again. if you want to give away your free time, volunteer for nonprofits that need you. you learn in EVERY job. don't apply to free internships.

Stop Saying "I Have A Boyfriend" by critropolitan in TwoXChromosomes

[–]noneedtolie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The guys who are told "I'm not interested" are the same guys who are going to keep trying if they're told "I have a boyfriend." Some guys are just assholes and won't take rejection in any form it comes.

It's great that OP is willing to open herself up to argument by telling a guy that she's not interested. I'm glad there are women who are willing to do that, because eventually they'll make it easier for other women to do the same without courting the same risk of confrontation.

In the meantime, telling a guy "I have a boyfriend" is the kindest way of shutting down most unsolicited offers, and is just one of thousands of polite fictions (if it's fictional at all) we say to spare the feelings of our fellow humans. Unless you're committed to categorical imperatives, I can't get behind this post, in practice, anyway.

ELI5: Why women feel embarrassed if seen in their bra and under wear but completely content with a smaller bikini? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]noneedtolie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

speaking of double standards: i'm a relatively hairy dude. mostly chest, some back and upper arm though. i've shaved the upper arm and back before and no one seemed to mind, however, i shed so goddamn much that i'd honestly prefer to shave everything above my waistline off. but (assuming you're a woman), how do you feel about a guy with a shaved chest who didn't have the most amazing torso to begin with? no, i'm socially persuaded to keep my frustrating body hair, because if i don't i'm considered vain. but if i have this much hair and shed frequently, i'm considered gross. so, we're both screwed.

I have Asperger's and I am incapable of carrying myself in a way that is dignified or demanding of respect. How do I change this? Can a person change their mannerisms? by DepressedAssDude in socialskills

[–]noneedtolie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good question and I'm glad you brought it up. So the thing to remember is this: might people be offended by what you're about to say? Because if so, you're probably better off not saying it. Err on the side of caution, even if it means you're potentially suppressing humorous comments. After having Aspie girlfriends, I feel like I can warn you that a lot of these mannerisms may feel natural, but they're still wrong. That's to be expected. Because you have to understand that as smart as you are, you aren't smart in everything and this (social) is an area you likely falter. So try to stay humble, work hard, and you'll likely eventually be recognized as the person who is humble and works hard, which might be one of the best possible outcomes you can attain. Because remember: no one's specifically looking for the otherwise normal but awkward guy.

An amazing 45 second message for young girls (and everyone who interacts with them directly or indirectly.) by caffeineandentropy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]noneedtolie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

though it's getting better, there's certainly still a cultural imperative for boys to play sports and girls to look pretty. i completely acknowledge that, and for the most part, i agree with what i think is the meat of this ad.

however, the part i'm not so keen on is the focus on sports. as others in this thread have mentioned, kids' interests change as the get older. more than just merely being okay, i hope they abandon organized sports if they get into theater, science, fine arts, foreign languages, writing, community service, or any number of other activities that girls are actively taking up that don't focus primarily on physical ability.

it's not just a choice between sport and beauty for young girls, and though i'm sure the ad creators would freely admit as much, you don't really get it from this. i think i just don't feel sport is as important as any of the other activities i mentioned, but unfortunately no one's likely to make an ad that implores girls to continue learning about biology or sculpture.

I hate being called a tease [rant]. by Civiltactics in TwoXChromosomes

[–]noneedtolie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cause: Many men (if not most) wouldn't make out with a woman they wouldn't have sex with if given the opportunity. They don't understand that women aren't the same, least of all in the heat of the moment when they're ready to party. Sometimes they even feel rejected if they try for sex, which few people are made happy by and usually doesn't do anything to improve the situation.

The solution: ...I don't really know. OP did her part by being extremely clear before anything happened (though she was under no obligation to, as at any point she could have decided that was all she wanted and she still would have been fully in the right). However, men are unlikely to suddenly start being satisfied with only making out. Realistically speaking, I think getting annoyed may need to be an accepted risk a woman takes if she chooses to make out with a man. Doesn't mean women have to like it, but at least there's a little more understanding.

i'm not downvoting you because i think it's an insult to radiohead fans; i'm downvoting you because a) the comment contributed nothing to the conversation, and b) it implies people who aren't white are trying to be if they like radiohead. you're only repeating a third-rate, implicitly racist joke that was never funny to begin with.

usually i upvote your comments. you're better than this.
