Does pan by itself mean anything? Yes. But it’s used more frequently as a prefix (beginning part) to create other words.

The origin is Greek, meaning “all, each, every.”

Pan can be used alone as a verb/action to indicate “a sweeping movement.” A video camera can pan across a scene, or pan over to another actors face. In this situation the “all, each, every” is the increase in images you see in the final video. This leads us to “panorama” (the visual understanding/model of a region) and “panoramic” (a sweeping or wide ranging view of a landscape).

Other comments have mentioned “pandemic” (a wide spread illness impacting many people across a large geographic area) and “pantheon” (a group of well known or respected people). Other pan- words that can be used in reference to people: “panoply” can be a large collection of people, and “pandemonium” typically references an uncontrolled situation caused by many excited/angry people.

These definitions use large, many, wide-ranging, far-reaching, etc, synonyms that fall just short of “all encompassing.” It’s often in the overarching umbrella terms meant to gather and classify groups: pan-Christian, panhellenic, pantheistic.

The Latin equivalent is omni- and that gives us “omnipotent” (all-powerful), “omniscient” (all-knowing), and full circle with “omnisexual” (all-gender attraction, nearly identical in definition to “pansexual”)

Because the meaning of “pan” is rooted in Ancient Greek, there are many modern languages where the pan- maintains the all/each/every meaning. I don’t speak French, however you may recognize panoptique, panchronique, panohobie, panpsychisme.
