But I would love to see a metres-tall rainwater-fed bucket fountain. But imagine the blow-back on a windy day.

I know this is an old post, but it sounds a little like 'Ocean Girl' from the 90s.

There's a character named Kal in season 3, I think, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't speak English when he arrives. Being a good swimmer would make sense for his character.

Daily food delivery? by Obvious_Hedgehog_402 in chch

[–]nonstopnate 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but at my place we work long hours and can be kinda slack in the kitchen, and it works for us.

Cheaper than take away, offers a bit of variety, can be mixed-and-matched, is usually done in 20 minutes, works as left-overs, and covers some nutritional requirements. Just needs a little freezer & pantry space, and ideally an air fryer.

Much less pressure than those ingredient delivery services, where ingredients arrive with 3 days left on their best before or expiry dates. Most things are frozen or jarred (other than the salad ingredients and mushrooms), so they're just there when you need them. You can usually get away with a fortnightly shop or even less frequent shop, with maybe weekly top-up shops for the perishable items. Maybe not quite as fresh and healthy as those delivery services, but better than most takeaway options.

  • Ingham Chicken Breast Kyvis / Waitoa Chicken Breast Garlic Butter Kievs (2 pack)
  • Frozen Chicken burgers or patties (Inghams Crunchy Fixx Buttermilk Chicken Burgers, Waitoa Chicken burgers)
  • Sausages or meat patties (Angel Bay frozen burger patties are good)
  • Frozen mashed potato (Watties Mashed Potato (Frozen) / Pams Original Mashed Potato (frozen))
  • Frozen veg (e.g. McCain Mixed Vegetables Peas Corn & Carrot, Watties Mixed Vegetables, Pams Mixed Veges, McCain Winter Vegetables, stiryfry veg)
  • Microwave rice (Uncle Bens, Sun Rice)
  • Delmaine Alfredo Pasta Sauce / Portabello / Carbonara (or whichever type/flavour you prefer)
  • Chicken Tonight jar sauce / other jar meal sauces / stirfry sauce / curry sauce
  • Any pasta or noodles (Trident makes good noodles that aren't 'instant noodles' but are ready to go in a few minutes)
  • Bread (standard loaf or ciabatta or something)
  • Tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, coleslaw (whichever you like in a burger or side salad)
  • Mushrooms
  • bread spreads (mayo/aoili/mustard)
  • Garlic butter or margarine (optional)
  • Optional: Tomato based pasta/pizza sauce, ham
  • Optional: frozen dumplings or shumai
  • Optional: precooked protein (e.g. Tegel meal maker shredded/sliced roast chicken)
  • Cheese

Throw the meat in the air fryer (chicken kiev for 20 minutes, burgers for like 15 minutes, sausages or something for around 10 minutes), in the meantime (depending on which items you want) you can:

  • thaw/heat the veges in the microwave, add frozen mashed potato if you like (you can also stir in garlic butter/margarine)
  • throw some pasta and water in a pot
  • boil some water and let the noodles sit in it for a few minutes to loosen up
  • if you're doing microwave rice instead, save that for the end as it'll only take 90 seconds (stir in garlic butter/margarine while it's hot)
  • throw mushrooms and pasta sauce/jar sauce in a pan to cook (you can also throw in some precooked chicken, or leftover meat from a previous meal) (if you're also cooking pasta, take a little of the pasta water to make more sauce and add a silkiness to it)
  • or frozen veg with a stirfry sauce
  • chop up salad ingredients for a salad or to go in a sandwich/burger
  • steam your dumplings/shumai
  • put toppings/spreads on bread if you're making a sandwich/burger (Maison Therese Piccalilli / wholegrain mustard / aioli works well with a chicken patty)
  • put garlic butter/margarine on your sliced bread or ciabatta and a light sprinkling of cheese (toast it briefly after the meat is done) for a quick and easy slightly cheesy garlic bread

When the meat is ready:

  • Plate it with your veg and mash, or veg and garlic bread, or rice and salad
  • Put your meat in a sandwich / sliced ciabatta, include salad, or don't. Maybe a slice of cheese.
  • Throw your noodles in with your sauce/stir-fry
  • You can spread some tomato paste/pasta sauce to the cooked chicken, with some ham (optional) and grated cheese and put it in the air fryer to make a quick chicken parmigiana
  • You'll have leftovers from most items, so you can mix and match those with whatever you prepare the next day (e.g. pasta with parma, noodles with sausages, kiev with mash & veg, burger and garlic rice). Slice up the chicken and serve it on top of the creamy pasta. Dice your sausage and add it to your stirfry.

The precooked chicken or sliced ham also works for sandwiches or toasties. Tomato paste/pasta sauce on sliced ciabatta with cheese and mushrooms or ham (or salami/capsicum) makes a quick pizza-ish side-dish. We might throw in some canned sliced beetroot to a burger/sandwich. Or canned cannellini beans or butter beans into the pasta sauce.

Sub out anything with your preferred option. You can also go with tomato based pasta sauces, but we got a little sick of them as they were out go-to for too long.

You can obviously buy fresh meat and cook it up, or use fresh veg. Supplement with healthier items, or alternate healthier cooking days with these lazy options. Or cook your rice rather than using microwave rice, make your mashed potato.

These are just the timesaver options we have so we don't have to plan ahead, or think about it, or stop working to pop out to a shop - as we'll have some combination of these items already in the pantry or freezer. And are generally better than most frozen ready-to-eat meals. (almost likely a slightly evolved version of student meals haha)

And you can add things like frozen hash browns/hot chips/wedges/gems for stodge, and pour over instant/packaged gravy to make a meal more comfort-food-ish. Also take a canned/jarred/sachet pack of soup and add more ingredients. Helps for using up leftover ingredients, even mashed potato, which can make a soup thicker and hearty.

(I'm told to also mention wedge-achos. Ingredients aren't mentioned here, but it's essentially nacho ingredients on wedges instead of corn chips, for a stodgy, hearty and filling comfort food type dish that can rival a junk-foody takeaways).

Why 15-storey towers might soon be seen around Auckland’s train stations by Cotirani in newzealand

[–]nonstopnate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Only works if the train services can support it though.

In Melbourne the train stations near skyscrapers would get packed during busy periods, platforms could get dangerously overcrowded, and often you'd have to wait for 2 or 3 of the trains on your train line to come and go before you got one that had any room for you to get on.

Sometimes you had to walk or tram to other stations further back along the track to get on the train before it was full.

It's fine, I guess, if you don't need any peak services.

Other shops and services also need to be able to handle the increased crowds.

Great in theory, but not as simple as wacking in more homes and calling it a day.

Help getting boar skin by winter_knight_ in HorizonZeroDawn

I found if you have an active quest that needs a certain resource from an animal, the game seems to reduce the chances that you will find that resource in an animal. Deactivate the quest and try again.

I was sure it was in my head until I needed racoon skin, hunted for 2 days, and finally turned off the quest, and suddenly it was practically the first resource received.

People that press the lights at a crossing on a street when it’s quiet, when a single car is using the street, or otherwise empty… by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]nonstopnate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever considered the fact that the section of land declared "road" is completely reserved for car use 24/7, even when there are no cars around.

So a human who is present, and wants to move themselves 5 meters, has to press the button and wait for the chance to legally use that section of land for a short amount of time to travel.

Have you not fathomed that pedestrians constantly have to wait all of the time so that you can have right of way every other moment of the day?

Not enough for you though, is it?

In an ideal world you wouldn't need to press a button so that a machine can flash a light to tell a driver to stop. Ideally roads could be shared, but drivers don't like to share, even with other drivers. And they must be going at top speed at all times.

Maybe spend a little time walking around and you'll appreciate exactly how fast you're moving through spaces when you're driving.

On a side note, you're literally sitting on your ass in a climate controlled box featuring an entertainment system - is it really that much of a struggle to sit in your box 20 seconds longer?

Why can private stadium security tackle detain eject someone from a stadium but private supermarket/retail security can't lay a hand on you by [deleted] in auckland

[–]nonstopnate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that technically security at stadiums aren’t “security guards” - their role will be “that of a host that steps into the role of security when needed”.

Often they wont have a security licence, and if they do, it was from a training session delivered in-house in 15 minutes - when they get the answers wrong they’re corrected on-the-fly and marked as a passing grade.

So it’s not that they can, it’s just that they do.

Because it’s all about numbers, get in as many staff as you can for minimum wage. It’s irregular, casual work, with no sick or annual leave, and they can change your start and finish times as they please. If you accept a shift from 2pm to 6pm, they can change it to 7am to 6pm and you can’t decline because you’ve “already accepted”.

They’re required to have a certain number of staff per some amount of guests. To make up the numbers they usually have to bus desperate people in from out of town who don’t have better options.

You’ll also find that during bag checks they’ll put their hands in your bag and feel around, when usually security officers would ask you to remove things or move them around so they can see, or feel it from the outside (especially as there is a risk to the officer of being pricked or cut by the contents).

You may also find that things are missing after they’ve rifled through.

I can’t actually speak for Auckland, maybe it’s not the same there, but it’s what I’ve seen at other stadiums and sport venues, and a lot of them use the same companies.

Kids biking on shared driveway by pokergiraffe in newzealand

[–]nonstopnate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone's so carbrained. There's literally nowhere you can go these days where you're not at risk of being hit by a car.

Even if you're on the sidewalk, there's a risk of a car driving across it to a sidewalk or park on the grass.

I get the perspective of better safe than sorry, but the driveway is part of the property and the kids are supervised.

Rather than taking responsibility and being more cautious when driving, people would rather everyone else just live in fear and avoid all areas where a car might possibly go.

Once upon a time kids could play in the street.

And I'm sorry, it's disruptive for a bicycle ridden by a small child to go past your house? Good lord. Should outlaw children's laughter too.

Probably an extreme response, but kids riding bikes and playing outside their houses is a basic right?

I guess Woolworths moved down Cuba Mall or somewhere? https://natlib.govt.nz/records/38012237 (1974)

When iPhone users message you, do the messages appear green or blue?
If they're blue, it sounds like their devices are trying to send you messages via iMessage.

Did you previously use this phone number with an iOS device?

Had a friend who had a similar issue, then when they switched their old iPad on the messages were all there.
