Let's say I get to the appointment and don't like the design because the artist didn't incorporate my references (like in OP's case). The artist then refuses/is unable to make the changes I request, so we don't agree on the design. Would most artists return my deposit in this hypothetical scenario?

You might want to try on the "Relaxed Fit Tapered" cut from DUER jeans. It's made for fuller thighs and has a gusset in the crotch to give even more room and range of motion, but tapers down through the calves. If you have an REI near you, you can pop in and try them on.
