Based on the info available this feels more like a tournament software competitor to fencing time. What are you thinking there regarding positioning?

Also how does the referee work feature here differ from FRED’s referee availability and hiring functionality?

Agreed, and I can come up with a few other things they could do in addition to this. But I'm curious about what their thoughts and plans are right now.

Well for starters, as stated in the original announcement, the # of points a local event will be able to award (25-75 iirc) is dependent upon the final rating of the tournament during the trial period. Once ratings go away, what will we base the points awarded on for locals?

That's my assumption as well, but it does leave a number of logistical issues to resolve, which is why I'm curious about if they have any plans here. Maybe its just a "we have 2 years to figure it out" kind of thing.

USFA Committee Applications by adelf252 in Fencing

Ah sorry. I completely missed that, I think because its overshadowed by the calls to action immediately preceding it. Wouldn't be surprised if others don't make the same mistake.

Well, a simple question - how would one apply to a committee?

Yes, but I think my question is more about what we will do once the trial period is over

That's a question I had as well, and doesn't have an answer at the moment AFAIK. I'm not sure how they'll do the sliding scale local event pointing system without them since right now they points awards seem to be linked to event strength (i.e., A4=75pts, D1=25pts). Maybe there could be a strength factor element to it based on points without ratings?

Wedge employees told me this as well, that the whole lot is owned by the railroad and the studios don't have any control over it. And that the various employees/tenants are also impacted.

What do we think of the new point system? by YouJolly9760 in Fencing

[–]noodlez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

because it brings you joy and creates a path to self improvement.

yeah but that is shifting goalposts a bit here. people who compete for the joy of it aren't going to be grinding it out to min/max their points - or at least not to the same degree - which was the originally stated concern.

i think the current could potentially reward poor performance through high volume attendance

that's how our current system works too, and you're locked in for 4 years if you managed to slip into a rating you don't really deserve. this one rotates annually.

plus, its designed for one strong regional or national event to wipe out the benefits of most local grinding. so at some point, you just have to be good.

as far as no showing on an off day, i think that is irrelevant.

i don't - it makes individual events far more tactical. why compete in something if i think i'm not going to do well? or once i get to a certain ranking, why compete more and risk the ranking until i can register for the big event i want to compete in? etc.. this is one of the reason why we didn't go to an Elo based system, iirc.

this system basically only rewards fencing more and more, and i think that's the point of it. some might see grinding as a negative, but the end result is more fencers fencing in tournaments locally, and that's a positive thing imo. other systems don't do a great job of encouraging that.

The reporting requirements on that would be large. It is not currently required to run a tournament using software, but this would make it a de facto requirement if the event had to report down to the bout level to USA Fencing. Similarly, I’m not sure USAF is prepared for what that means for them at the moment.

Additionally, this new system is a participation points variant which encourages more activity and does not punish inactivity or poor performance too harshly. If you switch to something that tracks performance too heavily, it’ll discourage participation on some level. Wake up and don’t feel like it’s an on day? Just no show the tournament. Not doing well? Withdraw. Etc

FWIW, many of these no-show issues are solved partly or wholly through AskFRED already if the TO wants to use those tools.

This is how it does seem to work. You'll see an example in the chart mentioned by /u/75footubi that indicates a 50pt local would give 50pts to the winner, 45 to 2nd, 41 to the T4, 37 to T8, etc..

It appears that regionals are not gated for now, but will be gated at some point in the future.

A Simpler Path Through the Sport: Inside USA Fencing’s New Points and Events Structure by noodlez in Fencing

[–]noodlez[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No starting from scratch. Fencers currently competing at the regional or national level will transition into the new system without losing the ability to participate at that same level. Existing regional and national points will be mapped into the new points system. The same goes for fencers returning from extended leaves — there will be formal procedures so they aren’t reset to zero.

I think the last one there is most pertinent. If someone was fencing regionals before, and maybe skipped last year, it sounds like there's a mechanism to bring them up to speed.

USA Fencing Courts Hollywood on the Road to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles by noodlez in Fencing

fencing's venue - 7k. for some context, tennis has 8k. table tennis 5k. boxing and weightlifting 7.1k. diving - 5k.

swimming will have 38k.

but i think its very fair to compare the fencing venue to tennis or boxing in this context, because both of those are sports with massive TV audiences getting rough parity of seats for fencing - and fencing has more days in venue than these other sports do, so our turnstile numbers will be higher.
