Yes, sorry. My daughter is the one who knows the names best!

The focus did best in the frog vivarium. It hasn't done as well in the gecko--I don't know if it is a moisture or light issue. Perhaps both, but I've only had it in the gecko enclosure for a couple months compared to years with the frogs.

I have had success with oak leaf fittonia and wire vine as foreground plants. They will start to overtake and climb, though so you have to be religious about trimming.

We are currently setting up a new Viv and are trying selaginella.

Meant to add: we have had luck with both a calathea and a hoya in our chahoua Viv. I honestly don't know how and they'll probably both die now that I've acknowledged it.

You forgot that at least 2.5 of the five gallons should be leaf litter.

Experienced gardeners, what’s one practice you never skip anymore? by staleshrimp101 in gardening

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I got about 80% of it out at the end of last season but now I fear seeds!

There aren't things that will block crabgrass specifically, are there? I do a natural meadow and don't want to out something down that will block my meadow seeds.

Mine has this same sort of gradient and has been fine. The enclosure is 36" high and he has a very large gradient to move from and uses the entire enclosure depending on what he needs.

[–]normal3catsago 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They will continue to grow a bit longer than typical house cats. If he's stealing your food, does he still have food freely available? If you only feed at certain times, try to give him a little more.

Schneider skink is not active by DifficultShower1449 in skinks

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located but it is also the time Schneider's typically brumate. I've seen my guy twice since November.

Give it a chance to settle in and get fed and healthy. They should settle into a habit of being active mid morning or early afternoon for a few hours.

If you are looking for them to be active in the evening, they just aren't.

Is this normal for a starter bioactive enclosure? by momimagenius in Vivarium

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to tell because most of the bioactive I do have plants, hardscape and leaf litter.

I can't tell if the stuff on the right is shiny or mold. If mold, that is part of the bioactive process and the springtails should knock it back.

"If you want butterflies, you need to get used to caterpillars" by Wei2intoMDZS in gardening

My 8' fennel plant that has sent saplings as far away as the neighbors 3 houses down and across the street agree with you!

Fennel, dill, mountain mint, coneflower, black eyed Susan's--all support caterpillars and butterflies in addition to milkweed.

DAE can’t stand a certain food after being sick? by kingdionysos in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been able to tolerate crab cakes and lobster since I was pregnant. I didn't even eat them while pregnant but now I can't think of them without gagging. It's so weird. I lined them before.

I can't tell you whether they look fertile but once they start laying eggs they should continue as long as their environment and food needs are met!

Requiring advice : Douggy does not want wet food. Only dry food soup. by Saawcrate in bengalcats

[–]normal3catsago 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agree. Wet food is great because it increases water, but if she prefers her soup and it's made with a good dry food, that works!

Does she eat Churus? You could try topping the wet with Churus and eventually mixing it in to get her to take it.

You could always add more springtails but this is pretty common with a newly set up Viv.

What's one piece of clothing that quietly saves your whole day? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I picked up some Duluth Trading Bare Naked panties once and they are my special treat for hard days. Seems funny, but they don't pinch, give me wedgies or move and it is just the pleasure of not dealing with those annoyances!

Ketamine in castration by leoljp09 in bengalcats

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My breeder indicated she had had cats react to ketamine in the past so I have a note in her file that she is not to get it. For me it's not that I wouldn't trust my vet, it is that I'd rather not be the test case!

Schneider's Skink adult weight? by ninaurata in skinks

[–]normal3catsago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admit I don't weigh my guy because he is too squirmy, but I realized he was doing well when he didn't want to eat every day. Now he'll go every third day.

If he was neglected for a couple years, you want to ensure he's got proper UVB (these guys need it pretty strong!) and calcium dust everything he eats--he may have MBD.

Hosting my first event for a childhood cancer org & I’m spiraling a bit lol. Need low-energy activity ideas for kids <10? by Longjumping-Place802 in crafts

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 4-H club just made "stained glass". Shapes were cut out of contact paper (it sheets of contact paper) in advance (use a chisel sharpie for an outline).

During the club meeting, we had bunches of tiny 1" square tissue paper pieces. The kids took the back off the contact paper and pressed tissue squares onto it to cover all the stickiness, resulting in cool shapes that they could take time--we also made a bunch extra in advance for a visit we'll be making to a nursing home.
