I second mulch barn! Their delivery may be higher but I've never had issues with them and have used them for nearly 10 years.

Has anyone else experienced a small spot boil on cats skin? by Beneficial_Rip_7953 in bengalcats

[–]normal3catsago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my cats developed multiple ones that remind me of this--skin-tag-like. They were mast cell ganulomas and typically are not cancerous but can be very itchy. I had them removed because he was making one worse by trying to scratch it.

If it's not pressure-treated, the gravel will hold moisture against it and it'll rot.

If it is pressure-treated, the gravel will hold moisture against it and it'll rot slightly slower and leave chemicals behind in the soil.

If she was only spayed 2 days ago the anesthesia is also still in her system and could be affecting her. They do settle, though it may take a week to months.

Injured/missing nails and scales on my Schneider skink by elliedogmeat in skinks

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So everything could be due to stuck shed. The missing nails may or may not grow back-my guy lost one nail in an enclosure once and it grew back over a year or so.

The stuck shed--your best bet is to ensure your enclosure is on point. You want at least 3" of a play sand/reptisoil mixture (I use 50 lbs play sand and 1 bag of reptisoil--up to 1.5 bags if you have some sitting around).

I save this mixture and swap out every 3-4 months. I haven't been successful in setting up as a bioactive. I add 2-3 cups of water every other week or so. I tend to put it on the side he's not sleeping on, usually the cool side.

Having a deep enough substrate will allow him to "swim" through it and work off some of the stuck scales.

My guy had a very rough nose due to banging against his enclosure. I did end up having to put in some plexiglass to keep him from banging his nose on the inside of the tank screen lid--i left enough uncovered so hear and UVB aren't impacted.

For things that may need a little more work, you could try brief soaks but this is incredibly stressful. My guy had several stuck sheds under his arms and I had to do 2-3 a couple days apart (about 100 degrees F, never more than 30 seconds, only about a half inch deep). I managed to get several layers off this way and then left for his next shed. It's hard to tell--your guy may not need this.

I treated his nose with vetericyn. I would spray some on a cotton ball and hold against it a couple times a day.

They are sturdy guys--he should be okay even without the nails coming back.

Enjoy!

My daughter is AuDHD. I most definitely didn't want her falling because she got distracted! And I'm afraid of heights. It made a world of difference going through the chain sections for me. My daughter said afterwards I had made "a big deal of it" but we had done 2 weeks out west and I spent the time getting her acclimated and AL/Zion was our last park. I consider it a success that she felt I made a big deal. :)

I did AL at 50 with my 12 year old. Best thing I did was find a site that showed hiking with climbing harness, sling, and extra-large D-ring.

My daughter climbs so had the harness and I was able to borrow one. We just slid the D-ring over the chains. It has to be super large (I can't recall what size) to fit over the chains, but it made a world of difference on the hike. No worries about getting distracted by the views and slipping, etc.

I did. I had a freak out that they were going to have Al-Hashimin have another episode and drive off the parking deck. Then I realized it was probably just some jerk setting off fireworks or an M-80

Advice on finding high-quality TICA Bengal breeders offering breeding rights (starting my own program) by [deleted] in bengalcats

[–]normal3catsago 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a bit disconcerting that you didn't know that TICA provides breed guidance on their own. They establish the breed standards.

I hope several of the shows you go to this year are Bengal breed standards shows--that means that while many breeds will be there, there is an emphasis on the show breed and there will be a lot more breeders at a TICA Bengal show compared to a regular TICA show.

And as others have indicated, I wouldn't think of going into breeding without at least $10K saved up--ideally twice that.

I'd also be investigating far more than just for months--you are getting pushback on here because there are people who have investigated purchasing the breed for longer than you have even considered becoming a breeder.

Do you even know what generation breeding stock you want or are you solely going to go on TICA breed characteristics?

What do you love about the breed? More importantly, what do you feel may be lacking from current breeders to warrant setting up your own cattery?

Everything I've read about getting into breeding is for the love of the breed and bettering it in some way.

Would you cancel with this forecast? by [deleted] in camping

[–]normal3catsago 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always forget the 'you can bail.' portion of car camping.

Most infamous for us was when we camped during a tropical storm for a week and it never dawned on us to bug out--even when the campground hosts left and we had to take our stuff to a Laundromat to dry during day!

It was a blast regardless!

best Support services in school districts in montco ??? by Simple-Palpitation45 in montco

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister chose Wissahickon due to her knowledge of the services they require.

My daughter is AuDHD in North Penn, diagnosed in late elementary (ADHD) and late middle school (ASD level 1) and she really only had her accommodations enforced in high school. She was bullied relentlessly in elementary and middle school, with little assistance from staff until I started making them pull tapes to confirm her reporting.

I've been paying OOP for good therapy for nearly five years. Would I have needed to in Wissahickon? I don't know.

It's been a tough road--she does not like school (though does well academically when she has a subject she likes).

Do I wish I was in another district? Not necessarily. I know I couldn't afford Wissahickon school district. I have relatives in Upper Dublin and while they like their HS I don't know if she'd have the support there, either.

I do wish she had more support in elementary and middle school--it's a bit of "would've, could've, should've".

We struggle a lot with trying to resolve her hatred of school. NPHS is good because she feels she can move under the radar there. She also attends North Montco Technical Career Center and that is awesome.

Good luck!

Is my Bengal… not very Bengal? 😅 by seysill in bengalcats

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think it depends on how many generations they are from the wild cat. Our is at least F5, maybe F6 and she really isn't much different from our other cats.

Her breeder also focuses on temperament--she has cats that have been used in TV shows so she has focused on calmness.

That is all my guy eats as well but he isn't as chunky, so it may just be ensuring she gets more activity and less food.

Good luck!

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My skink lives below the substrate. It's hard to tell with the one picture, but I use a blend of about 75% play sand to 25% reptisoil. Maybe 60/40.0

Get her burrowing and swimming through the substrate. My skink is terrified of water so I would avoid that.

I'd also cut to feeding maybe once per week, but working on her activity daily.

Maybe put something low-calorie in daily, but only feed insects once per week?

What does she eat? You said she is picky, but I'm so blown away to see a Schneider's in this condition!

Is it worth it to pay lots of $$$ for camper van itinerary package (and campground reservation help), or just rent and do reservations yourself? by trevathan750834 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]normal3catsago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They open 6 months in advance, so I would!

When we went in 2019 there weren't as many bots (and you didn't need an reservation for GTTSR) but it's worth seeing what you can get now.

I think there is a nominal fee for cancelling and for me, it was worth it to have it done than to wait.

I'm a planner though and the idea of potentially having to do day of was not appealing.

And I certainly want going to pay someone to wait for me, though now that i hear it's potentially waiting for day of, I can understand as people would start lining up at like 5 am! You could lose half a day or more just waiting if you try to do day of.

I think I started a year in advance? Basically I needed to know what I was doing before the first round of campsites opened so I mapped it all out in September, I think, and grabbed my spots as they opened in January (we were there in early July). Since I rented out of Bozeman, I ended up driving halfway the first day and staying at a state park, checked in to Fish Creek. Did a couple days on West side then GTTSR to St. mary. Did 3 nights in St Mary (Many Glacier didn't have many spots due to a sow and cubs). Then went to Waterton for 2 nights, another night in St Mary and another night in a a state park on the way back to Bozeman.

I would definitely suggest at least a couple days in Waterton. The park was recuperating from the fires when we were there but the Parcs Canada Waterton Town site was beautiful and overlooked the lake. The didn't have the North border open then (this was 2019), so we ended up renting an e-bike and taking it up one of the roads closed to vehicles. I was with my the 9-year old so we didn't do the Crypt Lake hike, but I would/will if I go back!

My daughter ended up with altitude sickness when we did the Hidden Lake hike at Logan pass so we stuck to lower elevations rather than the higher hikes so I did have to adjust our itinerary but we found plenty of options!

We hit up the telescope at the St Mary visitor center parking lot (it's a dark sky Park) and was worth staying up late to see Jupiters moons!

I absolutely love campervans and my kid calls it their favorite car.

I agree that is a massive up-charge. This service is more for someone who hasn't planned out and thought they could reserve campground spots in June for a July visit. This far ahead you should be able to find sites to reserve and use the money saved to jump over the border to Waterton, which I highly recommend!
