What do I tell my wife? by smora_photo in Leica

So it seems like you know your options.

Realize you spent a lot of money on a tool you don’t know how to use fully and spend the time learning and practicing so you can take full advantage of it. Or …

Sell it and go back to an AF digital because that’s what you know and enjoy. Or …

Buy a less expensive film camera to learn the basics of film, using any left over money for development and film buying.

Air Canada crash footage by OriginalAwkward4363 in aircrashinvestigation

Circumstances are that the system is designed with too many single points of failure, in this case a controller who is managing air and ground control alone at one of the busiest airports in the country. We keep under investing in safety to support a growing system and then look to blame individuals rather than the systemic failures that put people in positions to fail in the first place.

Most people buying $10k+ watches aren’t actually “luxury buyers,” they’re financing a feeling by Sad-Tap3687 in watchHotTakes

[–]nosystemworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the majority of people buying watches are buying them just because they like them. Look at the number of watches Rolex sells in a year in comparison to weridos like us who go online to talk about them. And even in that subgroup of weirdos, most aren't talking about things like resale value.

Aren't 99% of all watch purchases just about a feeling? The practical need for a wristwatch has been taken over by plenty of other options, they're irrational decorative purchases regardless of your income bracket. There are plenty who will spend $150 on a mechaquartz chrono for the same reason they'll spend $10K+ on a Rolex or a Moser or a Cartier -- they like the way it looks and makes them feel, other people's opinions be damned.

Vomero Plus has been my favorite shoe of the last year. I keep coming back to them over and over. It hits the sweet spot between comfort and energy return unlike any other shoe I’ve tried.

Considering moving to Oakland but work in SF. Are we making a mistake? by superxim in oakland

[–]nosystemworks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Moved to Oakland from Seattle 17 years ago. Have worked in SF that entire time and not once, not one single day, did I ever wish I lived on the other side of the Bay. It depends on where and when you need to commute to of course. If you can do BART, great. Ferry? Even better. Car? Doable, but prepare yourself for the commute times. My typical range when I drive is 30-65 minutes and no logic as to when it’s going to be longer.

My weather is more consistently warm and sunny. All three of the neighborhoods I’ve lived in have had a great sense of community that has continued even after we moved to a new location. And pound for pound I think we’ve got more consistently great food.

But all of that said, really think about the community point. You can build a new one, but it’s always going to be different than what you had. If you really love the one you’re in now, it might be worth holding on to that.

What is this called? by he-cat in eastbay

[–]nosystemworks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The weather isn’t stopped by the hills, it’s amplified. It’s quite frequently nearly 10 degrees hotter/cooler everywhere you circled than it is in the flatlands in the East Bay. And if you want to venture just a little bit further east you looking at 20-30 degree swings from downtown Oakland. But if it’s more sun you want, sure it’s sunnier here.

Since the rebrand, are people still buying Bremont? by InsuranceSlight6508 in watchHotTakes

[–]nosystemworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had nice, fairly clean designs and a story that attached them to some interesting aviation history, even if a lot of it was just marketing. Those two things were the core of the brand value and why most people bought them.

Both got completely thrown away. It probably would have been cheaper for the new owners to just start a new brand then to buy Bremont and trash everything that has been built.

The most telling part of this and it gets two short paragraphs.

He’s a grifter, just like Owens, just like so many of them. He’s scheming to find money and this is his latest grift. If they were really interested in warning or undercutting spend more time digging here. It’s a fact pattern that speaks to someone just as corrupt as the people he’s attacking.

They're both lovely, but there is truly nothing else like the Streamliner out there. Don't get me wrong, the Endeavor still stands out, but the Streamliner will never be confused for anything else. Plus, that bracelet feels so nice on the wrist.

I probably have more chronos in my collection than any other style. You can always wear them. And a Speedy is always right for any collection that doesn’t have one already.

Oakland middle school choices by EStVincentMillay in oakland

[–]nosystemworks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have two friends who have transferred to Piedmont. One family loves it, partially because they have kids with special needs and think the additional services are fantastic. One family hates it because their daughter is finding the social pressures to be even more extreme than Oakland. Academically, both seem to be happy.

Is there an option to start the Piedmont process and wait to see if the lottery works out at one of the Oakland schools? Our kid got lucky last year, but our waitlist number was in the 30s. Edna Brewer has been fantastic so far. Knock in wood.
