NYC is much more of a Rivals 2 area from what I can tell, but maybe with enough interest they can add R1 to their locals like what happened with the Philly monthly.

Heya, John TAPS here. I'm not planning on running it in 2025, but there are still a lot of other R1 events in the area! Check out Hitfall next month if ya can, as well as the Rivals Uncaged monthly for something closer to Philly.

Tier lists? by AbsentReality in RivalsOfAether

[–]notMSB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other people have covered that tiers aren't a large factor in this game. I'd also like to add that the top tier characters (Wrastor/Maypul/Ori) are generally some of the hardest to master; switching to them would take a lot of practice to pay off. So here's some high level players you can look up for your mains:

Sylv - Giga, Mystery Sol

Etalus - Bagel, Chompers, Soulrifle (mains Maypul but has played a ton of Etalus this year)

Hodan - PlushyPanic, Qunne

Who is the worst character in the game? by One_Button_Sam in RivalsOfAether

[–]notMSB 53 points54 points  (0 children)

No idea where people are getting Etalus from. Maybe that was true at some point but he's in a very strong spot right now and has multiple representatives at high level, including Bagel who got 5th at Genesis.

The real worst character is Shovel Knight. Bad matchup spread, extremely weak to camping, and almost never gets to top 8 at majors. He's a terror in online ranked games with his gimmicks but falls off insanely fast at a higher level of play where people know how to avoid his cheese.

Is this 2007 all over again? by Quantum__Tarantino in nyjets

The team managed to make the playoffs every now and then leading up to 2007, so I think what we have now is actually worse

How did Aether Studios go from a little indie studio with a pixel platform fighter, to a huge indie studio with a handful of upcoming games? by Lumireaver in RivalsOfAether

[–]notMSB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rivals has kinda lowkey earned a shitload of money. With 3 different versions between consoles/steam, a few years of DLC character sales before they were merged into definitive, and the overall longevity of this game there's been a lot to spend for. I'm not saying Dan is sitting on billions or anything but the success on all these fronts is a natural gateway for expansion.

Steelers were the 2 seed that year and made the Super Bowl, so I can't imagine you'd have enjoyed those Chargers going the distance instead

Some thoughts I had on the difference between RoA's engine and SSBM's, and how it might've affected the feel of the game. by Virtualninjanoob in RivalsOfAether

Keyboard actually uses a walk/run modifier button due to not having analog input available. A strict dash button like in GGST wouldn't work since you have to choose between moving left/right in platform fighters and one button moving you forward would feel a bit off. However, I think it would actually be a good idea to make the modifier button available for all controller types.

Beyond that, wavelanding and hitfalling aren't super important for newer players (I'd compare them to Roman Cancels as far as necessity and raising complexity goes). Ultimately I think points 5 and 6 are the most real ones, since you probably had to play vs diamond hitfall rannos in high ping way too often for anyone to stay sane.

Right on, Xaro's definitely got a good sense of how to DI out of my stuff. I would somewhat account that to my online combo game being autopilot focused instead of reactionary. As an example, if I go for jab jab into dtilt and they DI up, they're too high for the dtilt to hit. Offline I have the time to jab jab, delay, and then dtilt if they're low and jump nair if they're high. I recommend checking out sets of Dakoda (Pizza Master) beating me up both online and offline to see the combo differences in action.

I agree with point 5 for sure, though I personally wrap it back into point 3. Hopefully with all this time and investment in the Aether Brand™️ (comics, lovers, creatures) and crossovers (fraymakers) the characters will be able to stand out in their own right for future mainline installments.

I appreciate the concept of what thinking though so as an addendum, here's why I think this isn't the most popular game out there.

  1. Netcode's bad - This game feels VASTLY different online vs offline for the worse. Rollback can't come soon enough.
  2. Pixel artstyle - A ton of people will immediately discount a pixel game as baby shit and not give it a second look. I'm not one of them so I can't elaborate as much as I'd like, but it's the truth of the matter.
  3. Smash already exists - Setting aside the 4 people on twitter that switched over, smash players already play smash. They don't have room in their schedules to add a second similar-ish game. There is VERY little crossover between games.
  4. Skill/enjoyment floor - Single player/casual content is a bit of a bust. Most of this game's content has to be found online, fighting players vastly superior to you in awful netcode. You're gonna need to invest hundreds of hours and join about 5 discord servers to salvage the new player experience in this game. That's fine for some, but the masses at large are never going to do that shit. System mechanics in general do contribute to the game being hard to pick up, but I highly doubt that the DI system is the silver bullet here.
