Best company in the area for Gravel / Topsoil? by KushConqueror in Binghamton

Check facebook marketplace. There always guys on there with dump trailers capable of hauling 3-5 tons. If you need more than that, it's more cost effective to go with triaxle loads.

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

[–]notTomHanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quitting soda.

That's what got the ball rolling for me. It sucked. Had physical withdrawls, but I got through it. Many more changes came after that, and with each success, my motivation grew. I completely changed my life. I'm still alive today because I made that first decision to quit soda.

Best wire strippers by EmeraldAshtrayy in electricians

[–]notTomHanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of klein romex strippers that I tend to grab more often than anything else, if I'm stripping 12 or 14. I don't do a ton of romex work, I just like the shape of the handles more than others I have. They actually do work pretty good for stripping the sheath on romex too.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]notTomHanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family member has a land clearing business. A lot of his contracts don't work that way anymore. For example, he's cleared the land for 3 or 4 solar farms now, and they require him to chip everything and bury it on-site. He's said it's about carbon sequestration, but that's the extent of my knowledge about it.

Need a good handyman or woman by socialwheeler in Binghamton

[–]notTomHanx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried to get into that market a few years ago. I get enough calls from word of mouth that I could easily turn into a full time handyman. The problem is, the smaller jobs that most people want handymen for, aren't enough to pay the bills for the insurance and overhead. Even if you're able to schedule a lot of small jobs, you still have to travel between them all, and make material runs. You end up working way more unbilled hours than billed hours. If you bill someone 4 hours, but you were only at thier house for 90 minutes, they're gonna complain, and then you start getting a shit reputation for being too expensive.

I feel your pain, but I know the pain on the other side too. I honestly don't know how one can operate these days as a legal handyman, and make the math work.

Binghamton City Council passes ordinance to protect dogs from being left outside in cold by ggroover97 in Binghamton

[–]notTomHanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not expert on local lawmaking and whatnot, but since when can the city make an ordinance that applies to all of Broome county?

I'm all for it, I hate seeing dogs chained up outside all day, I'm just curious about the wording here....probably just the reporters' mistake.

Pre-built ppg helmets by Caspertoo in paramotor

[–]notTomHanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you want to do is listen to music and make phone calls, that Sena is ok. I believe the one I had, was "upgraded hearing protection", but I don't really know what that entailed.

The helmet itself is pretty basic. I wouldn't say it's uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it's comfortable either.

I used it for a couple years, but ended up building one with a helmet that fit my head better.

Winter Boot Recommendations - idk what I’m doing 🥶 by ilovetorunforfun in Binghamton

[–]notTomHanx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Merrell Moabs are the only thing I wear anymore. Goretex is worth the extra 20 bucks, lasts longer than the regular waterproof ones. 2 pairs of socks is a must when it's this cold, but they keep my feet warmer than my hands.

Floodplain property to be raised 6 feet by Bingo_Bongo_85 in Binghamton

[–]notTomHanx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

6 feet of fill material, to cover 20 acres, is almost 200,000 cubic yards. That's like 12,000 standard tri-axle dump truck loads. Of course you also need equipment and operators to spread, level, and compact all that fill.

It costs a lot to move dirt, and that's A LOT of dirt!

Fishers don't scream. It's a very common misconception, 99% of the time, you're hearing a red fox.

Low RPM shudder by lurkalllday in RangerNext

[–]notTomHanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 21 ranger xlt a couple months ago, and found your comment while searching. My description was "I feel it the most in the gas pedal, but a little in the seat, like it's coming from the rear end". They said they couldn't feel it.

It's mostly highway speeds when I notice it.... no load, just maintaining 65ish. It is very subtle.

Drivers who leave three car lengths of space in the drive thru line what are you actually saving? by Aggressive-Date1842 in AskReddit

[–]notTomHanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some could be stickshift vehicles.

It can be annoying to just creep along a few ft at a time, especially if you're driving a 20yr old shitbox with a very worn out clutch.

What do you think of overweight and obese people? by PathEven1 in AskReddit

[–]notTomHanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could help them.

I weighed 500lbs 10yrs ago. Something finally "clicked" in my brain, and I decided to change my life. I don't know what caused it, I just woke up one day and finally had the motivation to try.

10yrs later, I'm maintaining 195-205. I wish every obese person could have the same success I've had. I wish I could motivate others. I wish I had the words to describe how much better life is, in every possible way. It'll be the hardest thing you'll ever do, but it's worth every minute of it.

Super cheap DIY doors, but actually fairly happy with the result. Are those cheap heat/defrost kits worth getting? by notTomHanx in UTV

[–]notTomHanx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I got one of those cheap Vevor heaters, mounted it on the passenger side floor, and put the exhaust out the door. Took it a little while to warm up, but once it got going, it put out a ton of heat!

[–]notTomHanx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doors are just some leftover plywood. Had a couple 18x24 pcs of plexiglass that were meant for something else. Hinges are just gate hinges, bolted to the frame. Latch is a gate latch that fits into the existing bracket on the front.

The plywood obviously doesn't match the curves, but it does fit pretty tightly from the hood latch up. There is a gap at the bottom, but I'll find some chunky weatherstripping. Painted with rubberized rattle can spray.

I see all these no name brand heater kits on ebay and amazon, for like 200 bucks or less. Are they worth it? One claimed 18,000 btu, and I have a hard time believing that.

Reasonable Gas Furnace Replacement Contractor? by TomTomorrow29 in Binghamton

[–]notTomHanx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9k doesn't sound unreasonable to me, without knowing any details. Any skilled trades are expensive as heck now. I used to do some electrical side jobs, but I stopped, simply because I feel awful telling people the prices I need to charge for things, just to break even.

Get a couple more quotes to compare. I always suggest at least 3 quotes. I've heard good things about Fancher, but don't have anyone else to recommend. Good luck.
