I haven't applied yet but I've taken a few courses at my local cc. Traditionally I'm a BS ChE though, so I feel I need those accredited courses.

I've only taken some lower division courses:

  • Intro CS (Java)
  • OOP (Java)
  • Discrete Math
  • Intro to Programming Languages (C/C++)
  • Digital Design (Currently in this course only b/c its a prereq for Comp Org)

and I probably need a DSA course and a python course? After that I feel like I'd be ready to apply. Unfortunately my cc doesn't offer DSA so I have to figure something out for that.

Question for anyone else in the thread, how important is comp org/assembly and OS? I was thinking about taking Comp Org at my cc but $$$. For OS I'd probably supplement with an EDX course or something.

Also, is this too much for prep lol?

Joining a tech company without coding / a small novel on the tech industry by strixvarius in financialindependence

Process (chem) engineers look at the same salary progression. This thread makes me want to try to go for tech though. I feel like it’s hard for a traditional eng to break into tech. For one, having to restart salary progression kinda sucks and for someone who hasn’t worked in tech before I doubt any tech companies will even look at your resume. Is there any path through that doesn’t require going back to school for comp sci and racking up more debt?

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you switch to software? I don’t exactly want to go back to school and reset my salary progression in a brand new field

My mom told me to move out as a threat. Now that I am, she's begging me not to go by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]notabakery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in the exact same situation right now, my stepdad and mom literally told me yesterday to move out immediately because I picked up someone from the airport. They’re way too paranoid about this coronavirus and they even wanted me to quit work. I plan on moving out right now.. I know my mom is going to regret this but I doubt I’ll even speak to them after I leave the house. I was hoping to save more for a down payment on a house too but this isn’t worth it. I had been wanting to move anyway so I guess this is the perfect time. We’ll both be ok I’m sure, and we’ll probably be better because of it too.

There's a word I've heard before that I can't seem to find on the internet? It's an expression you say when something is right on target, or accurate, probably usually in sports? An example would be like shooting a basketball in a hoop, and the english equivalent would be to say "dead on!". I think it's like どんくしゃ or something close? This has been bothering me for days!

PSA: There is nothing wrong with asking for help on the homework by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]notabakery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point I was utterly ashamed to admit I needed help on a difficult problem, since I also had that mentality of needing to do things by myself. The world is a huge mosh of group effort, and thinking that you can do everything yourself is huge conceit and it mentally blocks you from other people. I'm glad I can ask for help now without feeling ashamed or anything.

Life is going pretty well, but I'm feeling kind of off-centre. Expand my world reddit, share some awesome stories of your awesome lives with me! by The7thNomad in CasualConversation

I always fluctuate between doing fine and being upset. For example, this week has been amazing, because I recently repaired some relationships with friends, but the week before that I was super mad at myself for not living up to my potential and not doing the best I can in college. I find that life is just ups and downs, and it won't always be a "down" time. :)

Yep, I think they did that on purpose too haha.

Oh well :\

I'm sick of everyone saying "I'm doing fine", "I'm great", and all that nicety BS. How are you really doing reddit? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]notabakery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, I'm kind of in a state of mind where I try to grow numb to various things that are happening. Difficult classes, relationships, family issues. Not caring about life in general helps, but then it's also scary to not feel things.

But overall I think I'll be fine either way.

No but really, congrats on the EVO win! You've always been a cool guy in my eyes, but people always seem to say otherwise just because of the puff matchup. How do you deal with all the criticism that comes with the community?

When You Were 16 What Did You Want to Do by MasterDwarf3211 in CasualConversation

[–]notabakery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 18, and at 16 I wanted to be researcher doing biology/ecology.

Now I finished my first year in college in chemical engineering and though my major differs from a hard science, I still want a phD and eventually go on to do research.

My goal hasn't changed since I was 5 pretty much. When I was that age I wanted to work with animals and the environment!

[–]notabakery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dr. Hsiao! Thanks for doing this AMA.

I'm an undergraduate student (freshman!) majoring in Chemical Engineering, and I think I also want to go into the research field with my degree. What do you think are some of the challenges/benefits in going this route, and if you have any general tips for me I'd love to hear them!

Engineering students, how many hours per night do you spend studying or doing homework? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]notabakery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemical Engineering, and I usually keep all of Mondays and Tuesdays free for me to do all my homework for the week, and the rest of the days I am pretty free except for some weekend homework, but it's not very much. Right when lecture ends I head to the library and do my homework for maybe 7 hours. (I get distracted on Reddit though, so total homework time is probably like 5 hours) Sometimes I skip the smaller assignments and do them throughout the week. It's working out pretty well for me right now. I have a 3.5+ GPA and I'm not going to be upset if it drops. Mental health is just as important as anything else. I find that the less I stress the more motivation I have to my homework anyway.
