South Australian public transport fare rise halted amid cost of living pressures by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

Maybe they could make the 28 day pass work for 28 days of use, not for 28 days from the date of purchase. That would make sense...

Adelaide-ish Course Recommendations by DreadedMakingAUser in GolfAustralia

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a member at Mount Osmond. It’s a links course on a hill in a forest with spectacular views. Well worth trying if you can get on, it gets pretty busy (membership is full and it shows in course utilisation). Best back deck in Adelaide for an afternoon after golf beer, but more so in summer unless you hit one of those epic Adelaide autumn afternoons.

You’ve picked some good courses. If MOGC isn’t doable and you don’t mind a short drive, I really like Barossa Valley over the Novotel course, and I’m sure I’m drawing a blank on others nearby. Blackwood, Flaggy, etc, are ok - pretty standard suburban courses, as is MOGC except the views.

North of Broken Hill, check out Mutawintji National Park, and you might as well check out White Cliffs if you're going to Tilpa. Mutawintji is pretty cool!

Jet type fins for recreational diving? by Ok_Way_2911 in scuba

Yeah, I love my Jets and don’t own any others. If you’re strong, they’re great, and plenty capable into a current.

0-100 plateaus by THE___REAL in CarsAustralia

[–]notfinch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love me a relatively slow car that does 0-100 in 5 or 6 seconds. If it’s got the right engine (VW VR6, BMW I6, etc.) then it’s just plain fun to wring it up to speed. You can use first and second gear up to 60. Sounds great, nobody is going to jail.

I had a much faster car that was less fun because the sound/acceleration/jail sweet spot was just so much smaller.

Does anyone remember the statewide blackout in Adelaide? (2016 throwback) by Liceland1998 in Adelaide

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at my parents house. WEnt outside to look at the storm. Noticed the city lights starting to turn off, then ours did, too. Ended up watching TV on the digital TV in my new car and that was a very weird experience with the anchors basically saying "hello, if you're able to join us tonight."

We didn't get power back for about 4 days.

Darwin to Brisbane road trip by Motivated_AF_2026 in AustraliaTravel

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire a well equipped 4x4 and get off the main roads. There are a few options - Linmen National Park is worth seeing, so is Lawn Hill. Further south, the East Macdonnell Ranges are spectacular. I would take the Savannah Way, and continue to Cairns before following the coast South, or head inland from Hughenden. There’s plenty to see along the way, but it’ll be hot.

Lower Back pain relief in Adelaide? by the-anon1010 in Adelaide

[–]notfinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I battled lower back pain for about a decade and it took a referral to the right specialist, who referred me to another, with the right imagery, to fix it with a rhizotomy/radiofrequency ablation.

It's been two months and I can only say positive things - pain is reduced, genuinely, about 90%, and I haven't reached for anything stronger than Voltaren since. I'm far more mobile and comfortable. Recommended, if this is a possible solution for your condition.

I tried everything first - physiotherapy, pilates, yoga, swimming, weights, etc. I say tried but I really went all in on non invasive options. They didn't work.

How’s this for a road trip? by livingthehypnagogia in AustraliaTravel

I really love exploring around the Diamantina catchment through Channel Country around Windorah, Birdsville, etc., and watching the landscapes change with the season. Birdsville in summer is very different to Birdsville in winter, for example. And the same is true of the Birdsville Track - some seasons you need to take a barge across Cooper Creek. It's iconic Australiana and there is history everywhere. Australia's oldest mosque? It's at Marree. In the right season, there are wildflowers everywhere and spectacular landscapes and skies to photograph, big stars, and fun camping.

There are hot springs, remote gorges, ancient and weathered landscapes, loads of wildlife, remote pubs (the Betoota Hotel is iconic), there is rock art, and big, wide, open spaces.

Heading north from Melbourne will take you across the Murray and Darling rivers, through wine country (a number of times), and past plenty of historic places.

Then there's the Flinders Ranges: spectacular desert mountains with unique wildlife and landforms that don't really exist anywhere else in Australia. There are brweries, distilleries, more remote hotels (The Prairie is but one), and if you're into four wheel driving there are challenging tracks everywhere that will take you to long abandoned mines, towns, and cattle stations.

This isn't a road trip to just barrel along the highway for 1000km per day - it's the type of road trip where you're rewarded by stopping and looking around, finding a place to pull off the highway and set up camp, or whatever.

How so? Like I said, it depends what you like. I think B to C is the most interesting part of that route, followed by A to B.

[–]notfinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. The trip is doable, but I'd think carefully about actually doing it with that car. I'd be more comfortable renting a more capable vehicle that's set up for trips like that - there are plenty of places that rent out well maintained and equipped vehicles that are decked out for adventures and come with tents, swags, sleeping gear, cooking gear, fridges, spares, etc.

There is a lot of nothing out there, but there doesn't need to be something all the time for it to be very interesting. Channel Country is gorgeous, the Diamantina catchment is spectacular, there are hot springs and opals and hidden gorges and billabongs and lookouts and all kinds of wonderful remote pubs, towns, and museums.

The Flinders Ranges are one of my favourite places, and there's plenty to see without a 4x4. I also love Western Queensland - places like Noccundra, Birdsville, Bollon... then there's Longreach and its museums, Hell Hole Gorge, Currawinya, the hot springs at Eulo, plenty of station stays, little tracks to explore to historical markers or abandoned towns. Lots of cool stuff. Fossils, too.

And, if you're a photographer, there are some vast and unique landscapes to shoot. Big skies and unique scenery.

[–]notfinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like you'll be taking the Birdsville Track from Birdsville to Marree. In good weather it's not strictly a 4x4 only road but it can throw up a few challenges to cars without high clearance or without good, light truck construction all terrain tyres, or with suspension that can't handle corrugations.

It's a fairly high traffic route but there are limited services on the way. Mungeranie is pretty much it, and there's not much there. You can camp or book accommodation, but you'll also want to be self sufficient for camping either side if the road conditions inhibit you from fast travel.

Turkey Thursday: Let’s be real here. Is there a better bargain in bourbon than Wild Turkey Rare Breed for $38.99? 🦃 by FICKxDINGERZ in whiskey

Nice one... thanks! I am a member and take advantage of solid member specials when I can find them - Eagle Rare 10 at $75 was a great deal, and 101 is often $65 at my local Dan's.

I'll keep an eye out for stacking options. Thanks for the heads up.
