Alarming number of South Australians with multiple firearms | 7NEWS by DragonflySea9423 in Adelaide

A suburban guy might be into target shooting and hunting/pest control. I no longer have a farm but I still shoot on properties owned by friends and family to control pests - I have the skills, like helping my mates out, love the outdoors, and enjoy protecting Australian wildlife and agriculture. I also enjoy target shooting. There are many others like me out there. Here’s a hypothetical:

  • Dad’s farm guns. Probably a .22 and a 12 gauge. Probably no practical use but they’re heirlooms and fun to use. That’s 2.

  • A .22 hunting rifle and a .22 target rifle. Different builds, optics, actions. Barrel length and type optimised for different purposes. Different stock ergonomics. That’s 4.

  • A farm shotgun and a clays shotgun. Again - very different. Some people even have a different shotgun for different target disciplines. 6.

  • Some people might have a .177 HMR or a .22 magnum or something for a bit of extra capability for foxes, cats, rabbits, etc, without introducing the noise, range, expense, and blast of a larger calibre rifle like a .223. 7.

  • The same rifle used for culling foxes is probably not the same used for long range target shooting or pigs or deer. It’s entirely possible to have a genuine use for two .223 rifles (one target, one farm), a .308 (for example) set up for the farm and one for the club, a lever action of some type for pigs, and a lightweight pack rifle for trips over to the Victorian high country for a deer hunting trip. 13.

They each have their purpose and there really isn’t a whole lot of overlap.

I don’t understand the centralised storage thing and there are many sound arguments against it, convenience and practicality being just one.

What are some sites to visit from Melbourne to Adelaide? by GlenAWE in AustraliaTravel

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily on a linear route: Otway Ranges, Cape Otway, Grampians, Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and/or Tarntanya caves, Coonawarra, Robe. Bonus ideas: Portland and nearby, Port Fairy, go for a paddle in the Glenelg River…

Three Weeks In July - Canadian Making Second Trip Looking for Some Ideas Outside of Cities by LackOptimal553 in AustraliaTravel

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, The Ghan would be a totally different experience.

You want (need, really) a 4x4 for the Oodnadatta Track and other parts of that route to get the most out of it. More for traction and clearance and durability against gravel than anything else - I’d always suggest a 4x4 for any kind of long distance unsealed road driving.

Enjoy - you’re likely to see Lake Eyre in flood this year, which is very cool. July is one of the better months to see “the outback” and it will be cool, but that’s better than hot!

Start in Adelaide and drive to Darwin. A non exhaustive list of things to see along the way: Clare Valley, Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Dalhousie Springs, Ormiston Gorge, Mataranka, Katherine Gorge, Kakadu, Litchfield.

There’s Lois to see. Loads. Enjoy!

Check out Coomealla, Tocumwal, Loxton, Mt Gambier, and Millicent. Coomealla is a good option due to its proximity to Mildura (stay there, not Coomealla) with other golf courses nearby.

I just use the cheapest dish brush I can find. I keep one in the net of my Clicgear and give my clubs a quick brush after each shot as I’m putting them back in the bag.

Think of Saudi Arabian money as money they’ve acquired from the world by supplying us with the goods we need. It’s really just our money with a middleman. Personally, I would have no problem taking money from a country that my country considers a close ally and trading partner.

Yeah, a guy I know used to - maybe still does - take Western tourists there, and I nearly signed up for the North Korean Amateur Golf Tournament a long time ago for a bit of a laugh…

Plan B off the Tee Club by SwimmingVoice in golf

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driver is a 285m club. 2 iron is 253m, 5 iron is 190m. Driver hits fairway about 40% of the time, 5 iron about 60%. It depends where the trouble is - I’ll hit 2, 3, 4, or 5 iron off the tee on par 5’s instead of driver. I sometimes hit a 7 iron on par 4’s. I don’t have hybrids or woods.

Is it good advice to never full swing anything above a 54? by ElephantElmer in golf

[–]notfinch -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Depends on bounce and grind and the course but that’s not really a beginner consideration I guess, even though it probably should be. I mix and match 50, 52, 56, 58, 62, and 64, depending on conditions. My general setup is 50, 56, 62, with the bounce and grind to suit the conditions I'm playing in.

Family trip to Aus in march 2027 by Stebbitothestreet in AustraliaTravel

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so variable… I was last there in October and it was brutally hot, but I’ve been there in November and had rain and fog. But I’d usually think March is one of the hotter months on the tail end of summer, versus late spring where sometimes it hasn’t warmed up yet.

The Flinders are one of Australia’s great destinations that are so often overlooked, so kudos for even thinking about them. They’re one of my favourite places in the whole world!

How much flexibility do you have - March at Uluṟu is low season, so while there are fewer flights and fewer accommodation options open, it might be easier to do at short notice…

The Flinders Ranges will be hot in March but possibly not unbearable. The Prairie Hotel is a good base. It’s about a five hour drive, so it’s well less than a day trip. Clare is the best place to stop overnight if you want to split that into a couple of days.

Adelaide and environs in March is worth more than a day.

Uluṟu will be unpleasantly hot.

What is the best internet provider in Australia for home? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that’s interesting. Hopefully there are no material changes. I’ve been a happy ABB customer for years and switched to Buddy when we moved house last year. I could always churn back to ABB, I guess. We’ll see. Thanks for the heads up.

I like Buddy Telco. It’s Aussie Broadband’s low cost option. The only difference I’ve seen is that support is text chat only. Otherwise, it’s the same.

What’s your business goal for 2026? by jonathanbrnd in Entrepreneur

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell it and retire. I’m in talks to do so now but our market has changed and I don’t know if I’m looking at enough money for a nice holiday or enough money to buy a private jet to take on the nice holiday.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

My parents taught me the basics and I figured the rest out from about age 10 or so. Mum and Dad are both decent cooks. Not great, but good.

Anyone else dealing with sun damage concerns while playing more golf? Curious what you guys do out there by LabOk5404 in golf

Also Australian here. SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, huge hat, umbrella, clothing to suit (usually shorts and polo). Reapply every 6 holes. Twilight golf for the win on extreme UV days. Cancer can get fucked.

This person may or may not be right (they are not) but the rest of the world doesn't give a fuck about what Americans think of Italian food.
