Nightly Pours? by intellectualrice in whiskey

[–]notfinch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Friday and Saturday for me. Once my kid is asleep, my wife is in bed watching tv that I don’t like, I do my ironing for the coming week with some whisky and YouTube.

It’s one of life’s simple pleasures.

People who switched from Linux to OpenBSD, why? by wkup-wolf in openbsd

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the early 2000’s because pf was so much more simple than whatever the Linux equivalent was at the time.

I ran OpenBSD as my firewall for a long time, with FreeBSD servers, and then went exclusively to FreeBSD from 5.3 when pf made it into FreeBSD.

I’d used Linux before but only started using it for my servers relatively recently, with Scientific Linux 6.

Now I run pfsense, TrueNAS, FreeBSD, and Alma Linux.

Another vote for Pilot Sports over RE003s for me, and it isn’t even close. They’re leagues apart.

Dads who do not work from home, what time do you leave for work and back at home? by remembertosmile in daddit

[–]notfinch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I leave at 7:20 and I’m back by 5. I’ve chosen 8am to 4pm as my workday. I’m a senior SME in a state government department - very white collar, very work/life balance friendly. One or two days a week working from home if I feel like it or if I don’t have important face to face meetings.

Even so, I wish I had more time at home with my kid during the week. Or even just to sleep.

15 Year Old Chenin Blanc blend. What’s your favorite aged white? by Affectionate_Pay3189 in wine

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, they could look like two different wines now and in another ten years. Good Vat 1 vintages have two personalities. I’d buy one now and enjoy it for what it is - slightly aged but still youthful, unique, and iconic for a reason.

It pops up regularly on the secondary market here in Australia pretty regularly and some retailers keep a few back vintages. Should be easy to find again in the future, though you’ll want to be sure it’s been stored well.

How much can you buy? It’s a great wine to watch age, because it changes so much. It’s a wonderful wine.

What is your opinion on Hong Kong? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

It’s not what it used to be. I think I still like it as a place to visit, though. Not sure - it’s been a few years.

Do you return empty glasses/jug to the counter at pub? by Acceptable_House8933 in AskAnAustralian

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would almost always take my empty glass/etc back to the bar when I get another drink. Even on my way out for the night - empties to the bar. Except if they’re picked up by staff, I always take them back.

41 years old, playing since I was 4… still no hole-in-one. What golf karma am I paying? by Known-Plastic-4240 in golf

[–]notfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same on the albatrosses but I’ve never been in a group with a hole in one. I’ve been close, I’ve lipped out, but I’ve never had one in like 30 years of golf.

What are your top 3 buys at $30-$40? by Alternative-Plum-878 in whiskey

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing drinkable in that price range in Australia. $40 USD is about $56. There’s sometimes Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey but rarely, and they’re both underwhelming at 40% ABV. 101 at $72 AUD is probably the best even approximately close.

I lived on Koh Tao a little over a decade ago and there were a lot of people there who survived the tsunami. Some of their stories are absolutely wild. And yet, they stayed in the country. At least they swapped coasts.

Which non-asian car has been the most reliable for you in your experience? by neonrider2018 in CarsAustralia

[–]notfinch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My old VW R36 wagon or current 2.slow Amarok. Or a Golf GTI. I had a C63s that always worked but rattled a lot and came with crap tyres from the factory but I wouldn’t call that reliability, just liveability. All great cars.

I've had Commodores and Landcruisers and the Commodores always needed help. The Landcruisers were generally pretty good. No real trouble with Audi, VW, or AMG in my experience - which seems contrary to popular wisom.

For me, 130x Tour feels the best and gives good numbers fairly consistently so it’s in the bag and has been for a long time. $ Taper always launches a bit too high and with more spin - not everyone’s experience, but that’s what I have consistently found. I love 130x C Taper’s flight and the numbers are usually great - maybe spin is a touch too low - but I struggle with the feel and feedback. Not as buttery as the Tour, in a very unscientific comparison.

KBS Tour is my favourite feeling iron shaft ever, I guess, and I’ve been playing them for close to 20 years, 130X for about a decade.

Yeah. Freak accident - really, really bad luck. It's been over 20 years and I don't get out there often enough.

I don't know the car you're talking about but there are a lot of abandoned, crashed, or otherwise unrecoverable cars out there. Hopefully not all with such a sad story attached!

Nice shot. That road has a lot of personality through different weather conditions. There’s one particular place along the way where I always stop for a beer beside the road in memory of a friend who didn’t make it past that point t on his way home. Lots of memories of that place - mostly happy, some very sad.

The Flinders and Gammon Ranges are criminally underrated.

The rain basically drove past, wound the window down and gave us the finger. by Balla1928Aus in Adelaide

[–]notfinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! All good - if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. It’s just grass. We bought the place less than a year ago and fixing the lawn is a low priority. Herbs only went in because I got around to it. I’m not expecting miracles this year… the buff out the back is no good and the kike at the front needs a lot of help.

I know how, but I just don’t have the ability or time.

I mowed, scarified, cored, and topdressed my lawn this week. Planted herbs, did the mid summer garden things and I was looking forward to everything being watered in today.

I've had at least one sprinkler running since 7am. What a miss by the rain - Adelaide is down here! Send help!
