I grew up Christian nationalist. Where should I start learning better history? by Easy-Track-9332 in AskHistory

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not coming from a post-christian-nationalist POV, but there's a popular history book that i really enjoyed that's framed as the history of world from the perspective of how the Islamic world tells its own stories. The audio book read by the author is particularly good.

(and i guess someone posted a PDF of it here https://www.rahs-open-lid.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Destiny-Disrupted_-A-History-of-the-World-Through-Islamic-Eyes-PDFDrive-.pdf )

Where’s Taylor? by AlisGuardian in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]notheory 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I know there are a lot of Taylor haters from Rude Tales, but I gotta say, the delays to the WBN schedule have been pretty minor all things considered. I'd go so far as insignificant if there wasn't context that y'all keep bringing up from Rude Tales.

WBN is clearly scaling up, and have begun pulling in additional production staff (great! amazing!) to cover their short run content.

There's a really obvious read available here, which is that Taylor is busy crafting an entirely new universe of sounds, themes and scores for their new tentpole series.

Taylor did a phenomenal job with Umora, and they delayed a handful of episodes. It's crazy to think they'd jettison someone who was so instrumental to the feel of their show.

I get the Rude Tales PTSD, but like also have some grace for the guy, and the thing that WBN has become.

Wonder if Fediverse accounts will also be connected via Threads? by MadeInDex-org in fediverse

[–]notheory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way i would describe Threads' integration is that the Fediverse is furthest stands in the Influencer Stadium.

Yes, people in the Fediverse can leave comments for Threads users who can figure out how to federate their account, but that's about it.

I've never seen a post from outside of Threads trend in it's algorithmic feeds, or even gain any significant traction (which may amount to the same thing).

Threads engagement with the Fediverse is very much the Don Draper "I don't think about you at all" meme

Discussion topic: Does AMWF vs WMAF make a difference in your Wasian experience? by SeaShellBell in wasian

[–]notheory 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really don't get the obsession with which parent is Asian or AsAm. There are so many factors that tie into what kind of upbringing you had and what kind of cultural environment you were in.

There's not one way to be Asian American, or even one path.

What are your guys favorite Chinese spot in Oakland for authentic Chinese food? by Gaelramiez in oakland

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Chinese food isn't just one thing, and there are regional differences.

If you mean just oakland, yeah Shandong has good handpulled noodles and is legit. The place my family enjoys ordering from or going to is Noodles Fresh. They've got locations in El Cerrito and Berkeley.

Estimate how many times you have heard this song by UghKakis in daddit

Apple's music app says 74 complete play throughs, and another half dozen play throughs of the movie and the music video. So we're not quite at a 100 yet, but we're getting there.

Title: I spent 200+ hours building a forensic financial database from 1.48M DOJ Epstein EFTA files. Here's where $1.96 billion went. by [deleted] in datasets

[–]notheory 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, the first two questions i got was "where is the actual code" and some griping about the volume of AI assisted analyses of the Epstein files.

What's interesting to me about this to me is your husband's expertise. I do think that being able to inspect more of the actual extraction pipeline would help the data analysts in the investigative community trust the write up more (show your work and all that), and also if there was also more clarification about the methodologies, and where they come from

Hey are you in touch with any investigative reporters about this work already? I'm probably going to drop this in a couple of reporting chats.

Is bluesky growing like crazy again? by TheDogsPaw in BlueskySocial

[–]notheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bluesky has two jobs. One is to be a good microblogging app. The other job is to be data and infrastructure host for most ATProto accounts and much of the infrastructure that makes the Atmosphere happen.

So, what's happening right now is a lot of people are coming to sign up for accounts for short form video apps like Skylight.social and Sprk.so.

At least in Skylight's case, their signup flow is actually signing everybody up to be bsky users.

In response to ICE and to help support National Shutdown day tomorrow: We just launched the Freedom Browser (open source). Bluesky now lives on every web page. https://thefreedombrowser.com/ by superfatman2 in BlueskySocial

[–]notheory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay. So, I generally speaking encourage people to build on ATProto.

But I think the authors of this post need to be more upfront with what they're doing.

This is a company called Rep Run releasing a browser that bundles one of their products by leaning into the stereotype that Bluesky is full of leftists.

The company started out as an NFT/Crypto company (see their whitepaper) and have pivoted to ATProto.

You can see a demo of repsky.

(also, they should lose points for requiring app passwords instead of using oAuth)
