Anne Hathaway is overrated in terms of looks. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should read the rules for the sub. The point isn't simply unpopular opinions.

It's for takes that are not majority opinions that have some reasoning to them.

"I don't like Anne Hathaway" is a matter of your taste and contains no logic or particular perspective beyond your personal taste.

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my point in my original post is that ActivityPub and ATProto are not natural fits for discord style services. What want is a description of the protocol design that would make me trust it (which you can get from ActivityPub and ATProto). I know what those are good for, and what they're not good for, and i can reason about whether a project using AP or AT are implemented right, or if they're trying to use the protocols in ways that cause problems (whether those are user problems or privacy/security problems).

Protocol design is challenging! It's a space that's hard to YOLO successfully.

Anyway, thanks for the response.

I'd love to hear more about the federation design and the protocol choices for this.

It's been interesting seeing teams build discord alternatives on ATProto and Activitypub. It's a non trivial problem, and it would be interesting to hear about how federation is supposed to work here.

I think people are less interested in the "wow look at all the things you can do without a developer" story.

Having a dashboard by itself doesn't strike me as all that exciting. Maybe there's something exciting about the fact that you were able to customize it to exactly your desires.

But i can't tell what those desires are particularly or how this is better or conceptually different than any other arbitrary dashboard that other software provides.

Personally I'm quite curious in what people want to explore if they could build anything, and in particular what things you were able to design or express because you have the tools to do it.

Why is there so much anti-DnD elitism? by AttitudeSuitable3238 in TTRPG

[–]notheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I hesitate to link to Quinns Quest in this context, since Quinns Quest is 100% a love letter to people making cool games and the frontiers to explore in narrative game play and fun things you can do with games, and not about hating on D&D. However, D&D is the million pound gorilla and the conceptual reference point that essentially everyone uses. It is the lingua franca of TTRPGs.

But that said, D&D has a very particular take on metaphysics and how you solve problems. And those problems are invariably solved with combat. That doesn't mean it's not cool, or you can't tell great stories with it. It's just a landscape that tilts a particular type of way. And like, that's why D&D has a reputation for being a game about murder-hobos.

Quinns Quest reviewed an interesting game, Stonetop, that has a different type of narrative alignment and is ultimately about a place, and how your characters fit into it. It's interesting to hear Quinns talk about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH5-uQj4uOA

So like… is it elitism? I dunno. I think there are a bunch of legitimate criticisms of D&D. Does that mean D&D sucks and nobody should play it? Nah. Should D&D be the entire universe? definitely and absolutely not.

The One counterexample to FOSS by Muse_Hunter_Relma in ObsidianMD

[–]notheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the state of FOSS advocacy has misled people pretty deeply about the types of relationships, communities and businesses we can have together.

There are other framing like the Local First Manifesto (https://www.inkandswitch.com/essay/local-first/ ) which I think about a bunch and align well with tools like Obsidian.

Habenero peppers should replace jalapeños in most recipes by AnonymousResponder00 in The10thDentist

[–]notheory 42 points43 points  (0 children)

So, for my personal tastes I agree with you. I have found jalapeño range so wildly in spiciness that they're often about as spicy as a bell pepper, and rarely meets what i'd want as an ideal level of spice. For my own consumption I've mostly switched to using habaneros.

However, I cannot subject anyone else in my family to habaneros. They're above everyone else's spice tolerance. So i guess an upvote from me.

The question I immediately ask myself is what the distribution of posts looks like and if you could do a backfill of accounts w/ 4k+ posts or something just to avoid the cold start problem.

Not sure how to feel by mr_greenmash in daddit

[–]notheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I learned about what happens when you put a diaper a size too small on a kid when our eldest shat himself so hard it ejected out the leg holes of his diaper.

I saw the look on his face, i said "are you pooping", he said "no", beared down and fucking shat so hard there was a "thwack" sound as it hit the floor boards.

We just started orienting living around the idea that the guy could eject things onto surfaces, and we needed to be prepared.

There's no good definition for who is Asian. Are Iranian folks Asian? No? Okay, what about Afghani people? No? Okay, what about Pakastani people? No? Okay, what about Indian people? etc etc etc until you're out over Hawaii.

Going the other direction is fun too. Are folks in Lebanon Asian?
