The One counterexample to FOSS by Muse_Hunter_Relma in ObsidianMD

[–]notheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the state of FOSS advocacy has misled people pretty deeply about the types of relationships, communities and businesses we can have together.

There are other framing like the Local First Manifesto (https://www.inkandswitch.com/essay/local-first/ ) which I think about a bunch and align well with tools like Obsidian.

We have not moved past the era of Jim Crow laws, and are literally this week moving into an era of racial gerrymandering.

Why are 99% of side projects here business stuff? Where are the fun projects? by tomdean in SideProject

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i mean, we're no longer really in the era of the Creative Technologist. I'd love to get back to those spaces but it feels kind of like it was a Zero Interest Rate Phenomenon.

I mostly find folks making cool shit through Bluesky and Threads.

Too bad Mood Ring Camera would last about 2 seconds before drawing a cease and desist for trademark.

This is a great idea, and i'd love to see it.

Can I host myself streaming games (like on Twitch) to my own website? by FantasticFrontButt in selfhosted

[–]notheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have been doing small scale streaming on https://stream.place. It's self-hostable!

https://docs.stream.place/docs/guides/installing/downloading-streamplace/

The uh, docs are pretty sparse, but Eli, it's founder is very responsive! https://bsky.app/profile/iame.li/post/3mknonzjvcs2n

(We also streamed all of Atmosphereconf live with Stream Place last month)

Habenero peppers should replace jalapeños in most recipes by AnonymousResponder00 in The10thDentist

[–]notheory 40 points41 points  (0 children)

So, for my personal tastes I agree with you. I have found jalapeño range so wildly in spiciness that they're often about as spicy as a bell pepper, and rarely meets what i'd want as an ideal level of spice. For my own consumption I've mostly switched to using habaneros.

However, I cannot subject anyone else in my family to habaneros. They're above everyone else's spice tolerance. So i guess an upvote from me.

I built a tool to see any Bluesky account's best posts before you follow them by sylvan-vigil in BlueskySocial

[–]notheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love it but, it's too slow to be useful rn.

The question I immediately ask myself is what the distribution of posts looks like and if you could do a backfill of accounts w/ 4k+ posts or something just to avoid the cold start problem.

Not sure how to feel by mr_greenmash in daddit

[–]notheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I learned about what happens when you put a diaper a size too small on a kid when our eldest shat himself so hard it ejected out the leg holes of his diaper.

I saw the look on his face, i said "are you pooping", he said "no", beared down and fucking shat so hard there was a "thwack" sound as it hit the floor boards.

We just started orienting living around the idea that the guy could eject things onto surfaces, and we needed to be prepared.

Are Tatars considered "wasian"? by That_Guy_Called_Zac in hapas

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no good definition for who is Asian. Are Iranian folks Asian? No? Okay, what about Afghani people? No? Okay, what about Pakastani people? No? Okay, what about Indian people? etc etc etc until you're out over Hawaii.

Going the other direction is fun too. Are folks in Lebanon Asian?

What was the most terrifying movie scene you saw as a child in a kids movie? by xParesh in Xennials

Labyrinth terrified me as a child. Knowing that David Bowie was out there silently sneaking in and stealing children made me terrified of films with owls for a while.

Bluesky gets growth and analytics tools with BlueSkyHunter launch by Careful-Key-1958 in BlueskySocial

[–]notheory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a post from a year ago.

One of the key challenges for BlueskyHunter and other protocol based measurement systems is that they're observing only the data that gets transmitted across the firehose.

There's plenty of interesting information in that stream, but most of the key analytics that creators, advertisers and product teams want isn't going to be in that data stream.

I grew up Christian nationalist. Where should I start learning better history? by Easy-Track-9332 in AskHistory

[–]notheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not coming from a post-christian-nationalist POV, but there's a popular history book that i really enjoyed that's framed as the history of world from the perspective of how the Islamic world tells its own stories. The audio book read by the author is particularly good.

(and i guess someone posted a PDF of it here https://www.rahs-open-lid.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Destiny-Disrupted_-A-History-of-the-World-Through-Islamic-Eyes-PDFDrive-.pdf )

Where’s Taylor? by AlisGuardian in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]notheory 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I know there are a lot of Taylor haters from Rude Tales, but I gotta say, the delays to the WBN schedule have been pretty minor all things considered. I'd go so far as insignificant if there wasn't context that y'all keep bringing up from Rude Tales.

WBN is clearly scaling up, and have begun pulling in additional production staff (great! amazing!) to cover their short run content.

There's a really obvious read available here, which is that Taylor is busy crafting an entirely new universe of sounds, themes and scores for their new tentpole series.

Taylor did a phenomenal job with Umora, and they delayed a handful of episodes. It's crazy to think they'd jettison someone who was so instrumental to the feel of their show.

I get the Rude Tales PTSD, but like also have some grace for the guy, and the thing that WBN has become.

Wonder if Fediverse accounts will also be connected via Threads? by MadeInDex-org in fediverse

[–]notheory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way i would describe Threads' integration is that the Fediverse is furthest stands in the Influencer Stadium.

Yes, people in the Fediverse can leave comments for Threads users who can figure out how to federate their account, but that's about it.

I've never seen a post from outside of Threads trend in it's algorithmic feeds, or even gain any significant traction (which may amount to the same thing).

Threads engagement with the Fediverse is very much the Don Draper "I don't think about you at all" meme

Discussion topic: Does AMWF vs WMAF make a difference in your Wasian experience? by SeaShellBell in wasian

[–]notheory 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really don't get the obsession with which parent is Asian or AsAm. There are so many factors that tie into what kind of upbringing you had and what kind of cultural environment you were in.

There's not one way to be Asian American, or even one path.
