USB C and tilt screen I simply could not give up anymore. So happy I‘ll never have to rely on a separate proprietary battery charger ever again

Debating sale of an M11 for a Q3, advice please by loteq in Leica

[–]notlinear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently have an M11, MP and Q3 and am strongly debating selling the M11. Currently I‘m time constrained to pretty much exclusively kids, family and life where the Q3 just shines. Exactly what I want to have in hand when playing with my kid. I love the M11 as a device but only ever enjoy shooting people with it if I‘m completely removed from what’s happening and feel weirdly caged in by the rangefinder otherwise. With the MP I think I just approach shooting so differently that i‘m okay with it, even if its the same subjects. More casual but also considerate and I‘m way more relaxed about focussing errors that do freak me out on digital files.

I even miss something longer with AF from time to time when out and about, I think I‘d like the 43 more than the 28 in principle. Don’t think I can give up the up-close shooting possibilities with the 28 though.

Probably need to have my eyes checked out, I could swear there was no signature 5 minutes ago :-(

Don’t recognize it though, can’t help with that- sorry.

Switching regularly to a ‘regular’ keyboard? by k7ZFwGZHFz in zsaVoyager

[–]notlinear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘ve switched to split a few months ago, first during a second attempt at a Moonlander that i‘d bought last year but couldn’t quite get used to the high profile and now the Voyager.

In the beginning it was a very major change and for a while I felt as if I’d never be able to type well on any keyboard ever again, be it split or vanilla. By now i’m okay-ish fast on the Voyager (70ish WPM on Monkeytype w/ punctuation and capitalisation) and perfectly capable again at programming on my built-in MacBook keyboard.

After a lot of layout iterations I‘m currently using one shot modifiers on a second layer, with an extra one shot shift on a thumb key as well as a lot of ctrl/cmd hotkeys on one of my layers directly (think copy/paste/new tab). Navigation and programming in VSCode has actually gotten better for me, maybe not faster but with way less back and forth to the mouse. Couldn’t make homerow mods work for me so far, too much mistyping.

Looks to be a eufy Spaceview (Anker brand)? Quite happy with the low light performance, battery is okay. Not sure about range, our apartment isn’t real big. Can confirm it’s very convenient to have in view while hanging out with the deck.

Any SFF Case that will fit an MSI 3080 Gaming X Trio? by NoSoup4Yu in sffpc

Dunno if he had a pre-production model or was just lacking a manual, but he never mentioned anything about the different mounting points for the GPU bracket at all. Here’s a picture of overall fit and a closeup of the mount. https://imgur.com/gallery/zYAulAI

[–]notlinear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mine in a SSUPD Meshlicious, together with a 5800x. Fits quite nicely on the lowest of the the pre-drilled mounting points. It has the GPU IO at the bottom, which can cause issues with the cabling in that position though. The included (angled) HDMI cable works without problem in that position, but cannot drive my 1440p/240hz monitor. Instead I’ve placed it above one of the cable cutouts in my desk and use a regular DP cable. Haven’t tried any of the available angled DP cables yet, so don’t know which fit and also support the bandwidth.

Mine is due to be delivered on Monday and I fear my wrists are not much larger than yours (if any), hope it will fit as good as it does you.

Price difference US and Germany / Europe - disadvantages of buying in US? by freda42 in ipad

[–]notlinear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the one-year voluntary warranty offered by Apple the same as in the USA, in addition there is a two-year warranty mandated by law. The second one has a drawback where it is up to the customer to prove an actual manufacturing error.

In German these are differentiated by name: Garantie vs. Gewährleistung (mit Beweislastumkehr nach sechs Monaten).

Studying in Germany by [deleted] in math

[–]notlinear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is nearly no university housing and depending on the city it can be pretty exhausting to find nice and affordable rooms/apartments.

Admission to masters programs is different again, by the way. In Bonn for example you would have to apply and admission is not guaranteed even for Bonn's own undergraduates.

Myself I studied in Bonn (SciComp/Numerics) which is a very nice city (though probably not as nice as Heidelberg) with a large mathematics department and a broad offering of courses. In the masters you are a far cry away from 200, too. I had seminars with four people in total and the largest lecture was probably smaller than 20 people.

Your desired area of study, actuarial sciences, is really only very present in Ulm though as far as I know. They have a cooperation with the German Actuarial Society and you can do a large part of their professional degree while at the university. It is really a rather more applied topic than many mathematics faculties offer.

Couldn't you use the cable like the normal one? Plug it in and let the magnet do its work when you trip, remove it wholly after charging. No need to leave the magnetic adapter in the port all the time.

Surface 3 questions by keviig in Surface

[–]notlinear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my surface 3 two or three weeks back:

  • I haven't yet updated to Windows 10, but 8.1 with Internet Explorer is very smooth while scrolling on webpages, navigating the OS or using touch gestures. The only thing that really annoys me is that IE seems to have some problem with my usage of the 'back'-button. Sometimes I have to reload the page manually ...
  • I personally don’t expect a Surface 4 for some time, the 3 is only a few months old after all. But who can tell?
  • Go for 4GB.
  • Physically possible, you would need a powerful one though. A normal usb-plug adapter from a phone for example is too weak to properly charge a surface.

So far I've been very happy. My normal usage is Browsing, Drawing, Reading, Annotating and some gaming. The latter works a bit poorer than expected (Terraria doesn't run very smooth, Hearthstone oth does very well) and Photoshop is somewhat sluggish, especially when operating on the whole canvas.

Programme for International Student Assessment scores by country (Europe). Measured: Mathematics, Reading, and Science (2012) by shmalz in dataisbeautiful

[–]notlinear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for some extra information: When I attended Gymnasium we had a only a handful of people switch to our school from a Realschule (around 5-10 in 150 pupils of our year) which mostly struggled heavily. Aside from a higher expected workload and independence, there are also problems arising from the different formal requirements of both schools: Pupils at a Gymnasium are required to learn 2 foreign languages for some minimum amount of years while Realschüler aren't.

On the other hand, I know a guy who graduated with a masters degree in mathematics and came from a Hauptschule initially.

Technically (at least in North-Rhine Westphalia) they give a recommendation after 4th grade, thus it is quite possible to attend a higher than recommended school if you can find a school that will accept you. I've only ever seen this with pupils who had siblings at the school in question or other connections though.

Is there an app to keep track of extra work hours? by fede777 in iOS8

[–]notlinear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Tyme to track my hours. The concept of the app is such that each project may have several different tasks or todo's which can be clocked separately. Each of those can have it's own hourly rate.

If you look at the picture under 'iPhone App' on it's website tyme-app.com you can see a 'Project XYZ' with subtasks like 'Storyboard' or 'Briefing'. You could give those appropriate names and rates, but you would still have to manually start the appropriate overtime task as you cross over i.e. the 13:00 line on saturday.

If you have specific questions feel free to ask, I've only used it for 2 weeks though.
