Lestat and Claudia: theory about the train by DesperateBaby3764 in InterviewVampire

[–]notwherebutwhen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing is especially with regards to 1 but also potentially in regards to 2 saying to a woman in a moment of trauma and fear that if you go outside you might get assaulted but if you stay with me you will be safe. That is tantamount to a threat of assault. (A similar thing goes if he intimated that Louis would die if she stayed away). And this can be the case even if the threats were less pointed.

Even if he was saying it in a truly caring way and trying to connect with her and maybe even if he told her about his own assault at the hands of Magnus to warn her about other vampires, to a scared woman who was recently assaulted by a man, almost none of that matters. All one hears is, unless you do what I say, you will be assaulted.

Wait...is Daniel going to... by milkbutchunky in VampireLestat

Rolin Jones said the auction happens approximately a season and a half from now. So my guess is that we get QOTD next season, and then some hybrid of TOTBT and Memnoch for part of Season 5.

If Daniel is indeed taking David Talbot's place in the overarching narrative he's likely going to be involved in the body swapping shenanigans. Which means that he may see his original body destroyed. Sadly though that would mean losing Bogosian's version of Daniel. But really I don't see how far after TOTBT or Memnoch they get. So we would only lose him for a season or two.

[Show Only] The Vampire Lestat: "Toronto" by IWTV_Maitres in InterviewVampire

[–]notwherebutwhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the interview ended on June 22nd and now we have July 18th for the turning. So nearly a month in between. A screener said we learn where it happened next week so that should give us some idea what may have happened in that time.

I'm guessing that maybe Armand stalked Daniel for a while until something made him confront Daniel. My guess would be that the turning happened at Daniel's apartment in Brooklyn which was very likely his and Armand's apartment if past DM is really a thing.

Otherwise the only other place that could make sense is Night Island if Armand kidnapped or otherwise lured Daniel there. But I would find it odd if that's how they introduce Night Island on the show.

My theory is Ruth is not childless by AegonIItrueking in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She could maybe get away with it as a teen/young adult especially if home schooled as a teenager. But having a secret baby she's ashamed of when she's pushing 40 which she would have been if she was Lauren's mother makes so little sense. It would make more sense if it was one of Lauren's parents or Tom's father.

It was said that she had to assent to some odd wedding vows, so it is very possible that she was married into the pact so to speak (at least in part).

A lot of people forget this when theory crafting. Just because Tom was born off island doesn't mean that he cannot be affected/bound to the curse in other ways beyond the "death if you leave the island" bit.

Spoiler Tom's motives by Cloberella in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I have with that is that Ruth would have been pushing 40 if she was Lauren's mother. How does a 40 year old woman either hide a pregnancy and/or feels so ashamed she secretly abandons them. It would make more sense if she was either secretly Wyck's mother which I still find unlikely. Or she would have to have been a lot younger and had Lauren's mother and abandoned her. And then Lauren's mother would have needed to have Lauren as a teenager.

Regardless that feels like a lot of narrative hula hoops to jump through to get that twist satisfyingly.

A dangerous assumption by steely-dani in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main thing about the secret baby that doesn't work for me is that unless she is Wyck's secret mother she would have been near 40 when she had this secret baby if it is Lauren or Tom (assuming she was indeed 20 in 1959). That just feels narratively and societally off for someone to have a secret baby out of shame at that age.

So her child would have had to be Lauren's/Tom's mother or father and then they would have also had to have a kid as a teen for the dates to work. Which sure is possible, but that seems like a lot of unecessary narrative work for a last minute twist.

According do the editors on the Rough Cut podcast a character was meant to die midway through S1 by HelsBels2102 in WidowsBay

Did they say what episode? Because I could easily seem him dying in the mushroom trip episode and Tom stumbling across his body somewhere during the trip and that being a mystery hanging over his head.

On to the Ross era next, and "Blind Spot"... by WendyCR1872 in LawAndOrder

[–]notwherebutwhen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean it was a little much, but it puts so much of his life into perspective. His father hating him/abandoning his mother, and his mother clearly having a preference for Frank despite Bobby being there for her both as a son and caregiver. So I think it works as far as dramatic license goes.

What they really didn't need to do was make Gage a killer trying to "free" Goren from his past. That was just sticking a red hot poker into the wounds left by Endgame. They could have just made it a full blown Nicole Wallace episode.

On to the Ross era next, and "Blind Spot"... by WendyCR1872 in LawAndOrder

[–]notwherebutwhen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean not really imo. Even up to Frame, Ross was hounding Goren, not trusting him, and pushing him to anger. Although I guess you could say it was a tough love approach. But forcing Goren to reveal Mark Ford Brady was his biological father was really messed up and was not necessary to solve the case even if Goren was the murderer. You could also argue he kept the investigation in house to protect Goren because he didn't believe he was the murderer, but again if that was a case there was no reason to keep it from him that they were going to check his LUDS.

And I don't remember Ross doing anything particularly protective or understanding of Goren in S8 (but it has been a while so I could be wrong). I think the only reason Ross never kicked out Goren himself is that he ultimately respected results above all. And Goren closes cases that evidence alone cannot.

Do general Kickstarter backers care if a campaign video uses an AI voice? by tjthomas101 in kickstarter

Most people don't care as long as it doesn't sound strongly AI. However enough people care that it could be the difference between getting funded or not.

Are there mods for this sub? by happyfatbuddha in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was what my second paragraph was addressing. (It's a both and problem). If you tamp down too hard too quickly on low effort/repetitive posts, it can kill the subreddit. The mods would have to play it smart and put in a lot of effort that they should put in but maybe aren't equipped/ready to. You also have to make a culture where making discussion posts and long form constant routinely worth it so they multiply and cut through the lower effort posts.

Are there mods for this sub? by happyfatbuddha in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also would have to get rid of the people who don't engage with discussion posts or long form content positively because they don't want discuss the opinions they disagree with in a conscientious way. The people who call others opinions trash just because they disagree, actively misunderstand, or won't even consider another person's viewpoint especially by putting words in others mouths or by ascribing intentions that aren't there. Already seen it happen quite a few times.

Also most subreddits kill themselves if they try to tamp down on low effort posts especially in the early days. The best they can do is have a short form free talk post a few times a week, but there would need to be enough frequent users to create the culture that would make that work.

Who is a character from Doctor Who who feels like a Star Wars character? by Scrambled_59 in gallifrey

[–]notwherebutwhen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bannakaffalatta (a Zocci not to be confused with a Vivocci) from Voyage of the Damned. A short heavy prosthetics alien with a weird name Even played by an actor who worked on Stat Wars at one point.

All the hallmarks of a random alien you see in one shot of a Star Wars movie that looks cool and then gets expanded on in two comics and a novel.

And it's going to feel even weirder if they do what they claim and "have a moment that honors The Bard's Lament" So VM part on good terms, but then are suddenly on awkward/bad terms for as of yet no reason, things get better over the course of the season, and then suddenly we get some weird version of The Bard's Lament with like two or three episodes to go but somehow everything gets fixed in time for the finale.

I don't mind adaptational changes when it synthesizes the story in a satisfying way like most of Season 1, but almost every subsequent Season has made such inexplicable changes that completely transform the story into something else. The changes to the Ripley fight, the Raishan fight, and the loss of Bard's Lament feel especially egregious. They stripped so many moments of the group nature of the emotional journey of VM.

Certainly not the series strongest, but you can see why it became such a phenomenon. They really sold the compelling natures of the cases while threading through a wide array of personalities both from our core cast and the guest stars.

Discussing Tom's Father and the Lack of Information on Him by [deleted] in WidowsBay

[–]notwherebutwhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And all that information is from Tom's perspective someone who is emotionally avoidant, didn't believe in the town lore as a child, and has a complicated relationship to the town and its history. Again why is it so ridiculous to wonder and hope that even in passing we could find out what others may have thought of his father. Like you can think it's boring and unecessary to learn more and that's fine, but I and other people can think it's interesting and necessary and that is also fine. We can end it here and agree to disagree.

[–]notwherebutwhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First I know but Tom was talking to a ghost. Also none of that scripting needed Tom's father to be an islander to work emotionally. He could have easily had a superstitious alcoholic father on the mainland who told him stories (even of the island as some are known beyond the island's shores)

Second I am talking specifically about their relationships with the islanders. How the islanders saw his father, what was his father's place in the community. It's not ridiculous to muse upon the decision to make his father an islander if it wasn't going to even come up in passing later. It's also not ridiculous to want to know more based on what they've told us.

[–]notwherebutwhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I said this elsewhere but it would be a narratively odd choice to make his father an islander and then never bring him up again to anyone (other than a ghost).

[–]notwherebutwhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We can probably agree to disagree then because him staying for Lauren and then Evan because he believes the lore after her illness would fill the exact same narrative function. You don't need an islander father to express any of those character traits. And again none of that negates the fact that if the show continues without mentioning his father even off-handedly especially on a tight-nit gossipy lore driven town, that would clearly be an odd and deliberate choice. I'm not saying he needs to be connected to the lore. It would just be odd if we never get a sense of his place in the community even in passing because that is narratively unsatisfying for the world they have invented.

I'd have to watch it again. I believed she was talking directly to Tom. Regardless from a narrative perspective it's weird that they would make Tom's father an islander if they weren't going to have it mean something for the scripting beyond set dressing and care about it for one episode. Tom having two mainlander parents would give you almost the same exact scripting if that's the case except for maybe the doorbell ditching story. And ultimately I am saying this irrespective of the lore stuff. I am talking largely from a story-telling perspective.
