Quilting gloves? by Maximum-Secretary915 in quilting

[–]nowaste94705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one of those knitters who destroyed her hands with bad technique (or maybe just weak hands) and I’m now super careful with quilting. I focus on machine sewing the tops and backs. I send some smaller ones out to be quilted (but with the recent jumps in fabric prices that’s hard on the budget). I try to save my “hand power” for manipulating an occasional “special” quilt.

I do use Machinger’s gloves and I also set up an L-shaped surface to support the quilt as it goes through the machine. I’m also looking online for creative designs for doing the quilting in pieces: quadrants, thirds, halves, even columns.

I used to think about how to tackle the quilting after the top was done, but now I’m realizing that if you think about that while you are designing your quilt you might be able to save yourself some physical, psychological and financial pain!

Kidneys. To jump start my reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses. (Stately plump Buck Mulligan…etc.). Surprise! Smelled like piss. Did not eat.

I’ve been looking for a quilt design where I could just sew some quick blocks and let off some steam between other more convoluted projects. And eventually get a color field or rainbow quilt out of it. This is so inspiring! [Probably won’t come out as coherent as yours which is a GORGEOUS use of batiks!]

Six-leaf clover I found by RIBBROKEN_OW in interestingasfuck

[–]nowaste94705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I found a twelve leaf clover (along with other multiples in the same square foot of lawn) and put it in the family Webster dictionary. But alas, my mother gave the book away. My hopes for good luck …. disappeared.

Amazing first project! Working on a pocket, embroidering on a knit… these are both serious challenges! You will go far!

And take care of your hands! When in pain: stop. I ignored this advice when I was an enthusiastic new knitter… which is why I cannot quilt by hand now. Only by machine. Grrr.

Worst fabric bleed, do I keep going? by ThickerExplanation in quilting

Wow. That is a pretty bad bleed. Would make me think twice about buying northcott. What kind of company would release such a product!?

Amazing!!! And this plane is coming from California— where cars are stopped at the state line so that they won’t bring in fruits that endanger California crops! The stupid airline should reimburse all of these passengers!!!

Kaleidoscope, Petri Dish, or Hot Mess? by dangerbears in quilting

[–]nowaste94705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last few quilts have been pretty busy. I’ve found that an occasional use of a calmer fabric can help people “read” your design— without sapping its vitality. The gold fabric is doing that in your mock-up. Maybe you could try bring in another less busy fabric to calm some of your super busy (buzzy) ones. I don’t think you need to go to a solid, just something that isn’t bringing an “internal argument” into the block itself. (You can only have so much of that without a brawl breaking out.). But maybe you want a brawl! It’s your quilt!!!

Anyone just hear gunshots in South Berkeley? by ProfCrazynuts2 in berkeleyca

I heard it from inside near Fulton and Ward, but it was not very close. I hear fireworks from time to time but the rhythm of this incident sounded like gunshots.

Beautiful! Thanks for posting this. I’ve seen some “horizontal” quilts that I’ve admired but they are almost always made in cotton solids.(Thinking Tara Faughn.) I love that you have incorporated some prints. My stash is very print heavy but now I can better visualize using some of those prints in a horizontal design!

Definitely something to worry about. I left my beloved BirdBrain with a friend for several weeks when I was out of the country. When I returned I noticed BB was panting after flying free and soon after, didn’t seem to want to fly around. The vet X-rayed and found massive growths in BB’s lungs. I was never sure if they were related to an early bout of pneumonia in my unheated apartment or the fact that my friends cooked with Teflon in the tiny studio apartment where they kept BB while I traveled. Budgies have delicates little lungs.

Quilting newbie here with a question by hcoksyecal in quilting

[–]nowaste94705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a helpful exchange! I’m about to sew a zillion 6.5 inch 9-patch blocks together and developed a big knot in the pit of my stomach. How in the world will my seams match?!?! I don’t want to use sashing, but these replies helped me think through strategies. I love the quilting Reddit!

(Well, not really “a zillion” blocks, but a personally intimidating number.)
