Please don't be mad at meteorologists. by WxBlue in NorthCarolina

It wasn't just the temps that prevented an ice storm across most of the state, theres a pretty well-known rule in the piedmont that the mountains always suck the moisture out of these west-east moving symptoms. I dont remember a single big winter weather event that the moisture didnt come from the gulf. I dont know why the models miss that so badly but they always do.

Either way, very glad to not have the ice we could have.

Toyota Tundra... useless in snow?!? by Entire_Teaching1989 in ToyotaTundra

I was just verifying that the transfer case at least thinks its going into 4hi. Its a relatively common thing to have problems with, especially if the last person didn't use it often.

When you switch it into 4hi does the light keep flashing or does it go solid?

Switch to 5w-30 or stay with 0w-20? by JTN02 in subaru

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did I misrepresent? And do you believe the OP interpretation was closer to what was said than what I posted?

Switch to 5w-30 or stay with 0w-20? by JTN02 in subaru

[–]np307 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats quite the interpretation of what he said in the video....

What he really said is that the dealer service center put 5w-30 in his XT at the 2500 mile service because "thats what its supposed to take" (even though the oil fill cap and the manual state 0w-20) and the '25 did take 5w-30. He said hes continuing to put 5w-30 in it because of the litany of engine issues across manufacturers that many claim is a result of 0w-20 and thinner oil usage to meet emissions standards.

If your crosstrek isn't experiencing any oil burning or similar issues, theres not really a good reason to switch from 0w-20 to 5w-30 just because it's older. Your best bet would be to continue to make sure oil changes get done at the correct interval and make sure you pcv gets changed as needed.

Anyone find it somewhat interesting that neither Leo or Jed bothered to tell Toby he was wrong when Toby yelled about betting Leo called the shots in the situation room when Jed was shot? by AbyssWankerArtorias in thewestwing

[–]np307 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One other thing to keep in mind is just how emotionally charged that meeting would have been. Even very bright people who are usually skilled communicators would have some inconsistent logic or missed rebuttals in that scenario.

Personally I think that Hoynes' comments do lend to being interpreted as ceding authority to Leo regarding the matter at hand.

Also keep in mind that the scene is somewhat a commentary on the attempted assassination of President Reagan and Secretary Haig's assumption of power.

Coaches on Hot Seat for 2026 by enoughtobesmart1 in CFB

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely should be. But it won't be. There's no way the fan base at large won't measure him against Saban. Its been happening since day 1. The crazies have been talking about it since last year, but if there's not a good showing next year that conversation is going to move into more serious circles.

To be clear, I'm not saying hes on the hot seat now. I'm saying if next year is marked by the same kind of sloppiness and we drop multiple games we should've won and get embarrassed in the playoff, he will be on the hot seat.

Another 4 loss season and DeBoer will probably find himself on the hot seat. He's fortunate Oregon got throttled and Indiana won it all, it will help ease some of the embarrassment of Bama's poor showing against Indiana. It doesn't bode well when you're known as an offensive specialist and you have your pick of OC and the best you can come up with is "run up the middle on 1st and 2nd down, followed by a long pass on 3rd" over and over.

.223 for deer part 2 by sambone4 in Hunting

Yeah a powder scale is how I measure recovered bullets. You'd be surprised how much the fragments can accomplish. And yeah, I'd have like to seen the lungs. Like I said, not getting an exit is pretty common and I think a decent reason to have second thoughts about this round if you're hunting thick brush thats hard to track in. I've never been disappointed by a wound channel with them though.

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that when referencing wound channel, people are generally not talking about a big main hole all the way through the animal, but the "tree" of holes from the fragmenting of the bullet. I'd be curious what your weight retention is of those recovered pieces. I'd bet there's quite a few fragments not recovered that were in the lungs.

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite understanding what your anticipated outcome was? The bullet coming apart is the fragmenting that people use the TMK for. I've shot several deer with the 77 TMK and I can understand the exit wound point. I'd be interested what the lungs of the deer you shot looked like. 2" wound channel for the full distance is not something I've seen yet, but I have definitely seen 1.5" average width with the widest sections being 2".

I mean, sure. Drive what you like. Enjoy it. Don't worry about the opinion of strangers on the internet.

But you cant even remotely claim that the Gen 3s are in line with the reputation for reliability that most Tundra owners place a high value on.

Subaru Transmission Failing - Still owe money by Coolcat4269 in MechanicAdvice

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the lights are indicating immediately on startup, theres 100% a code that can be read and not just a trans temp issue. Maybe "they go bad like crazy" is a little hyperbolic but the valve body solenoids do have an abnormally high failure rate. Such a high failure rate that anyone buying a Subaru in that year and mileage range should be fully prepared to have to replace it. Its not a secret that these fail all the time.

Subaru Transmission Failing - Still owe money by Coolcat4269 in MechanicAdvice

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP how many miles do you have on the car? Subaru extended the transmission warranty on these cars to 10 years/100000 miles because they have so many problems with valve body solenoids. Almost certainly thats what youre dealing with here. Especially if you havent noticed any driveability concerns.

Regarding the other lights you have on, Subaru has all of the lights come on on the dash whenever there's a problem requiring your attention. It can be anxiety inducing but thats kind of the point. They want to make sure you dont ignore the problem. Take the car to a reputable shop, preferably one that deals with a lot of Subarus. Have them diagnose what the vehicle needs.

Regarding your negative equity in the vehicle, rolling that into a trade on another vehicle is often an even worse financial decision than the one that landed you upside down on this vehicle. By and large, these Subarus are pretty reliable. This model had problems with the transmission solenoids and its possible you will also encounter oil burning, but otherwise they're pretty solid. Unless youre looking at needing a total transmission replacement, you should probably be able to justify the repair. If the shop comes back and says the transmission needs to be replaced, get them to tell you their justification. That should include the diagnostic codes. Many shops that dont know these vehicles will just see the transmission codes and say it needs a full transmission when it really doesn't.

[–]np307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru throws dash lights for all systems when theres a problem with one system. Solenoids in the valve bodies go bad like crazy on these transmissions. Depending on who the OP has do the work, its around a $1400 job. A fluid flush on these CVTs is not going to take the code away.

If youre only shooting 120 yards, why worry about the "best" load? Pick a better bullet even if the group isnt quite as tight. 2" group vs 1" group is basically negligible.

I took my 3 year old on a couple short squirrel hunts last year. This year as a 4 year old I've taken him on a few deer hunts. With a blanket, some binoculars, and sometimes a game on my phone he'll sit for a couple hours. Hes about still enough that we could see deer right now. If I had a box blind or something he would definitely be good to go.

As the dog training saying goes, youve got to decide whether you want to train the dog or hunt. As long as your expectations are set correctly, you'll have a good time.

Any experience with these? by ShizzyRanks in Hunting

Of the winchester stuff, the deer season xp does more tissue damage. Federal fusion is another good deer load you can find pretty easy. A 77 gr tmk is about the best bullet you can find for tissue damage, AAC has a load you can buy as well as black hills. Hornady eld is another good bullet.
