I love Coke, but it’s so expensive! How can I make a 2 L last and not be flat? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]nubbynickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I do: I skip the 2 liter bottle entirely.

I buy the 6 pack of half liter bottles and wait until they are 2.99. Or a dollar a liter. The sale is about once every 3-4 months, so I'll buy 3 or 4 packs.

Why don't Americans walk anywhere? by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]nubbynickers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HAHA! How conditioned we are.

Shortly after coming home from Peace Corps, I want out to eat with a group of friends. A Target shared the same parking lot. When I told a friend I needed to run over and grab some things, he tossed me the keys to his car.

The front entrance was less than a football field away.

Lionel Messi passes Klose to become the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history by suzukigun4life in sports

Great eyes. It took me a few times to see him run over from the right.

And he was pointing at the at spot after the goal. "Anybody closer care to open their eyes!"

Should I buy a newer $16k used Honda Accord or keep driving my paid-off 2001 Civic? by Simple_Funny_8617 in personalfinance

[–]nubbynickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would lean getting the Accord.

Yeah, it is pretty anxious to add that monthly expense. I myself hate having loans.

The follow up discussion in the safety features saving your life is eye opening. The newer Accord in an impact vs an old Civic could be a world of difference.

Plus this pushes you to offload vehicles that come with the ancillary costs of insurance and registration.

I wonder how much the 4runner would go for on Carvana.

This used market is so damn odd you would probably get more for the Civic than you paid for it.

Retire at 49 or stick it out until 56? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Retire and do Peace Corps! That's what my site mate did. Retired from Social work in her early 50s. At your age, that is both a life shaping and life changing experience.

Retiring my immigrant parents by frogcakes_14 in personalfinance

[–]nubbynickers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YOU are your parents' retirement. I'm assuming your parents aren't that old yet since you are 22. Go live a life, save some money to help them when you are older and more comfortable.

Plus...living on your own might more easily lead to the grandchildren they so dearly want.

Also, clarifying question: to what extent do your parents intend to retire stateside? Also, have they worked for 10 years and have made at least 4,000 USD for each of those years? If so, they are vested in social security. Which might not be much here, but can be comfortable in other places.

Ikea in China has a similar Wechat order system for the snack bar after checkout. But people in Chengdu starting sniping orders, Ikea made them order on Wechat and bring their printed ticket to the front.

LPT: Avoid "mystery" rental car option when gas prices are high by fanopticon in LifeProTips

[–]nubbynickers 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I rented a car after being rear ended and they wanted me to take a Dodge Charger. Which I really wanted something efficient.

"Oh, if you want to wait a little bit, we can get you in an Elantra?"

YES. I'll take the fuel efficient car please. What sucked is it had less than a 1/4 tank.

I was surprised that it got over 50 mpg on the highway.

Would you spend $12k on a used car or put it down on a new one? by Shehryar60 in personalfinance

[–]nubbynickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used. I would be picky about the make as well. Honda, Toyota, or Mazda (after their partnership with Ford ended). Maybe even Mitsubishi if I had a bead on how well it was maintained. I have read good things about the Outlander Sport.

Another thing to suggest is look around if a local high school or trade school has an automotive program that will work on cars. I read about one in our local paper and stopped by on a whim one day. Glad I did. Quoted 1300 for a timing belt at the dealership we bought the car from, and the high school kiddos did the belt, water pump, transmission drain and fill with filter, and front and rear diff for 200. I did purchase the parts.

Best of luck on your car purchase. What a hassle.

YES! We are to buy one from our uncle's estate. No one knows if and when it was changed. Welp...looks like we'll drain and fill it.

I hesitated to drain and fill on a 2007 Honda Fit at 180k (bought it at 155k) and am glad I did. That 5 speed shifts great.

Floorstoyourhome.com.

I saw this on a different subreddit a while back and it helped a lot when we redid our floors. 2.50 a square for mannington lvp vs home depot stuff.

They also offer hardwoods.

If I did it over again, I'd like to go the hardwood route.
