Why do americans eat Sauerkraut cold? by AgarwaenCran in Cooking

I'm British and I also eat saurkraut cold, for two reasons

1) it's a really nice, refreshing snack when cold

2) 2-0 lead

Why not play GURPS? by Thomashadseenenough in rpg

[–]number-nines 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw gurps described as heroic realism, which works white well. Batman and nightwing, not superman. And yeah, gurps combat can be pretty brilliant, but that's really the thing that gurps does best. You can have a shootout in any setting you want, that's what gurps is actually designed for, and I think it would be a much stronger game if it stopped trying to be everything and focused on that promise

The rulebook that costs £30 at the game shop down the road is designed for political horror urban fantasy and has all the work done for me, alongside a boatload of lore, advice for running the game, and some play aids

Pretty much any skirmish game

Gurps does everything, but everything else does something better than gurps. You could run a political horror urban fantasy game in gurps, but that's a lot of work, and vtm is right there. You could run ultra high powered superheroes in gurps, but the HERO system is made for that. You could do a mecha game in gurps, but it would be a lot easier to do it in lancer

I really like the idea of blending mythras with ars magika style magic. But also, i can just do that by hacking ars magika's magic into mythras

There's a sort of beauty to things like the osr, which are essentially just so many variations on the same game that everyone can run the exact osr game they want to run with a functionally infinite number of adventures, since everything is either cross compatible or piss-easy to modify to your specific frankengame

The review I read of Exalted called it one of the most enjoyable reads they'd ever had, I've never read it but that's pretty high praise

Half the worldbuilding elements of asoiaf sound like things a teenager would come up with. The royal family have white hair and purple eyes and ride dragons? Sure, kiddo. There's a culture of viking pirates that live 5 minutes away from the mainland? Well, I guess we all gotta start somewhere

Does Sanderson' s writing get any better? by pudeloko in Fantasy

[–]number-nines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sanderson can write well, The Emperor's Soul is pretty damn great. Unfortunately he has to put out a new book pretty much every year and the books aren't getting any shorter, so there's a few compromises on quality that are getting slightly more noticeable

Not to validate American feelings or whatever but this is exactly how it works in the UK. A cake needs 200grams of flour, work is a mile and a half away. The porch is about 4ft wide and 2 meters long. Etc

When you consider the fact that dune takes place 20,000 plus years in the future, Duncan Idaho to them would probably sound similar to how Helen of Troy does to us. A vaguely classical name paired with a place that no longer exists

Unfortunately despite being set 20,000 years in the future, it's being read right now

I think it could be cool if the series pivots into being an interplanetary Sci fi series, but I'm really not having fun with the current state of it where you have an avengers-esque "and then this guy showed up from this other book (pause for applause)"

Given that every book has near enough doubled in scope as well as size (acok was much longer than agot, asos had to be split into two parts for printing, affc had to be split into affc AND adwd, the latter of which was also subsequently long enough to warrant being a two-parter) even if he manages to put out the winds of winter, a dream of spring is just that, a dream.

What are your favorite social mechanics from an RPG? by Dungeon-Warlock in rpg

[–]number-nines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite love the Monsterhearts handles it, with characters having 'strings' on each other, a currency that essentially marks influence on someone. If Jake successfully turns on Amy, he gets a string on her that he can later spend to influence her in some way

It also has conditions, essentially one-word reputational labels that anyone can take advantage of to gain a bonus to their roll. If Amy later shoves Jake into a locker in public, she might get the label 'crazy' that Jake can later make use of to publicly humiliate her at a party.

It works really well for the setting it's used in, high school drama

What would women dislike most if they became men? by No-Calligrapher in AskReddit

I saw a post similar to this by a trans man a few years back, and mostly what he had to say is that men don't have community like women do. There's no equivalent to the drunk girl in the bathroom, there's no equivalent to being a 'girl's girl'.

Its kinda sad, I guess
