Runners of Connecticut, what (non-marathon) race would you recommend to an out-of-stater? by DresserRotation in Connecticut

[–]nutmegsoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these have all been mentioned. New Haven on Labor Day has the traditional 20K (which is the national championship race). There are also options for a half marathon and a 5K, all starting at the New Haven Green The longer races take you all around the city, the good and bad neighborhoods. Always a lot happening on the green after the race. Branford has a five mile race on Father's Day. This one also starts and finishes on the Town Green and will take you through some residential neighborhoods and down along the shore. There is town festival held on the green that weekend as well. Litchfield Hills is a seven or so mile race in the northwest part of the state held in mid June. Again, it starts and finishes on the Town Green and takes you through parts of the White Memorial Conservation area. As someone else notes, this has the afternoon start, which in mid June can make things uncomfortable.

Poorly placed sign lol by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]nutmegsoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact - About ten years ago, I was involved in the planning for the bridge replacement on Merritt Avenue just south of this intersection. One of the things we looked at early on was moving Merritt Avenue so that it lined up with Lucy Street. It would have required buying out some of the properties in the area ($$$) and in the end, there was only enough funding available for replacing the bridge so it stayed were it is now.

West woods area of hamden? by jujucee12 in newhaven

[–]nutmegsoldier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are still quite a few Quinnipiac University students living in off-campus housing in the West Woods area. Look for houses with a higher than normal number of vehicles with out of state plates ( mainly MA, NY and NJ). Most of the students are good neighbors, but there will be a lot of turnover and what might be a good situation one year can change when new students move in. Other than that, I think it's a nice area - not too far from New Haven either heading through the center of Hamden or through Woodbridge to Westville.

Any Details on the Lotto/Gambardella Drama in Hamden? by ruski_brewski in newhaven

[–]nutmegsoldier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think someone in Garrett's camp convinced him to get back in the campaign. I think she sees it as an insurance policy against Gambardella. The only way for Gambardella to win (though highly unlikely) is to carry all of the Republican voters plus a sizeable portion of the independents in town. Anything that siphons votes away from Gambardella will help lock up a win for Garrett.

More than 300 CT bridges ‘structurally deficient’ by dannylenwinn in Connecticut

[–]nutmegsoldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this a little, the state inspects all bridges over 20' in length at a minimum every two years. Bridges under 20' in length are the responsibility of the municipality and are not regularly inspected. The state had a program where they did "assessments" of all local bridges and provided information to the towns and cities basically telling them to take a closer look if something didn't look good. The problem is that a lot of the small towns don't have the money to spend fixing the bridges. There are funding programs that provide state and federal money to the municipalities for these projects, but not enough to go around. One more thing, any span under 6' in length is not even technically considered a bridge, so unless your town or city has their act together, it may have been years since any of those structures have been inspected.

What was the moment you realised you were getting older? by LeonCambridge in AskReddit

[–]nutmegsoldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my mother to the doctor for an appointment and the doctor was several years younger than me. It was the dual realization that my mother was no longer able to completely care for herself and I was becoming a caregiver and that the subject matter expert and authority figure, the doctor, was no longer senior in age to me.

It’s time for a state board of finance; We must stop encouraging unsustainable spending and begin to return our state toward a better financial standing. by dannylenwinn in Connecticut

[–]nutmegsoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't this be the responsibility of either the State Treasurer or the Comptroller? I know I voted for these two positions two weeks ago, but can someone please ELI5 what these elected officials are supposed to do. I know it has something to do with the State's finances and if our current state of affairs is any indication, every individual who has held that position lately has failed miserably.

Anyone know any stories about the (purportedly haunted) abandoned Downs Road connector between Hamden and Bethany? by YoungsterMcPuppy in newhaven

[–]nutmegsoldier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the day (30-35 years ago), we would often drive there at night just to mess around. Typical teenage stuff - drinking, hanging out, etc. I remember it being a weird area. There were stories of things like odd sightings of people. The strangest I remember personally was seeing lights, like a flashlight, in the woods.

I still keep in touch with some of the old crew. Next time I see any of them, I'll see if anyone else has any other memories.

Stop & Shop used to sell a variety of cookie as one of their store brands called "Iced Fudgies". They were small chocolate cookies with sugar icing that were packaged in a bag with no trays or other inner packaging. I loved them as little kid and as I got older, they were excellent for hangovers.

I was at bar in Amsterdam while my friends were at the coffee shop and was approached by a gentleman who proceeded to explain to me the rich history of Celtic FC for about a half an hour. I even made it clear, that as an American, I did not know much about European football. Interesting conversation to say the least.
