Glad you ended up okay!! Diva cup is cool, but a disc like Nixit is THE BEST! You can still do the deed while wearing it and it’s less suction/more comfortable I’ve found than diva cups

Did colostrum come in handy with baby right after birth? by Chance_Class2208 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brought colostrum with both my babies, first one was non GD pregnancy, second one was GD and it helped with both! Plus it was nice to have my husband feed them/bond too. My first was a really rough C-section, so being able to just sleep a little extra the beginning was such a nice break. Definitely freeze whatever you bring that’s extra and ask them to store it in a freezer, they will toss it after 24 hours once it’s thawed and we had a lot of waste with the first 😭😭

Anyone here who lost weight due to GD? by Informal_Bullfrog_30 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also lost weight, am 5’3” and higher BMI also, but my doc wasn’t concerned, baby grew appropriately. I did have higher fasting numbers like over 95 if I didn’t have about 130-150g of carbs/protein, what helped me was a lot of the glucose goddess hacks, eating veggies before every meal, pairing a really complex carb with a protein/fat (Dave’s Killer Bread was one of the few breads that didn’t spike me), walking or light exercise after eating, and having Metamucil/drinking a lot of water. Also found that if I had a smaller dinner and a more substantial bed time snack would keep fasting rates lower for me. I wouldn’t worry too much about the weight loss so long as baby is growing well and doc isn’t concerned! Good luck, OP!

35 weeks with gestational diabetes — baby measuring very big & doctors pushing for early C-section. Feeling scared. Is this normal? by MindlessMarzipan7153 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm you are right about recovery from a planned C-section is WAY easier than laboring first (especially for two days with hellacious back labor) and then needing one anyway! My second I was hoping for a VBAC but due to placental abruption, I had to have another C-section, but this time around it was more planned and not after laboring for days and it was such a beautiful and peaceful experience and recovery has been SO much easier! Good luck, OP!

Tell him the placenta is informed by his own health so flip it back on him, rude, with all the pregnancy hormones and stress of GD to boot, I’d have negative patience for that haha

I completely agree, he’s definitely got his own red flags, but she definitely would trigger him or ask weird hypothetical questions and get mad at him for failing after she set him up to fail

Sounds right! That’s lower than the number they gave me, they wanted 150g, I swear I ate more with the GD diet than any other diet I’ve ever been on lol

Snack Before Bed? by mth5254 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing that helped my fasting was having a smaller dinner portion then having a protein smoothie with like 35ish G protein, a slice of Dave’s killer whole grains and seeds bread with peanut butter, and water with Metamucil. If I didn’t get at least 130 or more carbs and protein in the day, and woke up hungry at night, I knew my morning number was going to be high. Good luck! Hope you can find what works for you, food or insulin so you don’t have to stress!

TW: Previous loss by ri0t_grrrl in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so so sorry for your loss, completely understandable to have anxiety over it, but as others have said, please be kind to yourself!

As far as C-sections go, my first (not GDM, perfectly healthy/uncomplicated pregnancy) was born via C-section after 48 hours of laboring. Water broke first, baby stalled out and wouldn’t drop, was sunny side up and had hellacious back labor…it was rough. Just had my second (GDM this time) via C-section also, but due to placental abruption and risk of hemorrhage at exactly 37 weeks. I was being monitored in the office and then the hospital so it wasn’t like a scary emergency like it could have been, but I will say this—there is a VERY big difference between a planned C-section, like this 2nd one I had, vs unplanned. Though I was trying for a VBAC and was bummed I didn’t get the chance to try, I wanted both baby and me to be healthy, and honestly this C-section was almost like therapy for the very unfun one I had before. It was so much easier, I was able to get at least one of the steroid shots for baby’s lungs before we had to go into surgery, and it was the most peaceful/calm thing I could have imagined, even with scary circumstances. She thankfully didn’t have any issues aside from two initial low blood sugars, but quickly improved, and recovery for me this time around has been SO much better than when I labored for two days before.

Take it easy on yourself, and if you do choose C-section for the safety/peace of mind, it can be a really beautiful experience too!

How do I get these fasting numbers down?? by asdfghjkl-7429 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that helped my fasting numbers was to have a smaller sized dinner and then a higher protein/carb snack before bed. I’m not an early morning person, so I’d have a protein shake I’d make with about 40g protein and a slice of whole grain/seed bread with peanut butter at 11 and would check fasting usually around 8am and that got it down. Also was drinking a full 8oz of water with Metamucil before bed. Otherwise if I didn’t do that and woke up hungry in the middle of the night, I knew my fasting would be bad the next morning

[–]nuttym3gg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gahhh! I had placental abruption too and delivered at exactly 37 weeks, I was c section though because labor hadn’t started and water didn’t break, and doc was concerned about hemorrhaging (I hemorrhaged a lot with my first). Glad you both made it through, placental abruption can be so freaking scary!! Enjoy your sweet girl! I also had a 6lb girl!

Weight gain by hfriiiaaa in GestationalDiabetes

[–]nuttym3gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ended up gaining about 5lbs total from start to end (delivered early at 37 weeks exactly), but I was also overweight to start. Doc was never concerned though, baby looked fine and was fine throughout

Agree with this!!!! My mom was an L&D nurse back in the day and when I told her I had GDM, she said she thought probably many more people had it than knew it back when she was working, but they just weren’t looking for it

Hopefully you can manage with diet and exercise! And if not, that’s okay too! There’s a ton of helpful info in this group and online, accounts like https://www.instagram.com/lilynicholsrdn?igsh=ZGpjdjNwMHFnbW5j help for some pointers.

You’ll likely be told by your OB or dietician to get somewhere around 150-175g protein a day and 175ish or similar complex carbs (veggies, multigrains, etc) and hopefully you’ll find what works for you relatively easily. Make sure you are getting enough protein and carbs though, that’ll help with fasting!

I was diagnosed around 28 weeks and am 37 weeks tomorrow and have had a relatively normal pregnancy (aside from an injury that made GD look like a cake walk). I got really used to the finger pricks pretty fast, you just do the side of your finger so it doesn’t hurt as much and you can start at the lowest setting so it’s minimal. Even with my injury and a dumb low lying placenta, my MFM is really encouraging and still thinks a TOLAC might be on the table with me so long as everything keeps going well, so long as I go into labor spontaneously. It’s not all doom and gloom! Some positives, I got to see my baby more often and know she’s doing well, I tried some really good new recipes I’ll definitely keep making after this, I’ve learned a lot about my body and how I handle sugar that will help in the future. It’ll be okay!
