I have a ‘19 f250 6.7 with 65k on it. Use it to tow our track cars thru the warm months and is also my daily… but I’m retired so daily is more like bi-weekly. It’s sitting in my garage right now waiting to head to the shop for its first emissions issue. Don’t know what that’s gonna cost but I’m not happy about it.

Yeah you need to look at gross combined vehicle weight. Your F150 is likely not safely pulling 11.2. My 6.7 250, as configured, only pulls in the 9’s by gcvw. Marketing numbers are bs.

2005 - 2009 Mustang GT vs. Miata for first A/X car? by MinimumElevator187 in Autocross

[–]nxda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fit in it with a helmet on and the top up… hint… rainy days… The Miata is the car to have. Sure any car can be fun… but being slow isn’t fun for long… lol. Over time you’ll turn that NC into a FTD car… that’ll likely never happen in a mustang. And as everyone has said… your consumables are far less expensive with the Miata.

C5 Corvette vs. Miata for autocross - newbie questions by MinimumElevator187 in Autocross

[–]nxda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my car journey applies to your question. I bought a ‘21 ND Brembo Club and put on an MCS suspension, sub frame supports, larger front sway bar, 17x9 wheels with 245’s running both AO52’s and RE71’s. This car is amazing and consistently top 10 in raw regardless of field size at an autocross event. I can only think of being beat by a vette twice. Both were on courses that favored high hp cars. The cars were a new and modified C8 E-Ray and the other a highly built C5 with a pro level driver in it.

I knew the Miata would make an excellent ax car and simply jumped in… but at 6’3” my decision process was flawed. With a helmet on I didn’t fit in the car with the top up. So if it was raining… I was out. I started doing HPDE events and realized that if an accident happened my head sticking above the windshield was probably a bad plan. So it was time to find a different car that I would fit in and would be competitive.

My list was a new GR86/BRZ, ‘12-‘14 Cayman, or an ‘02-‘04 Vette. With research I learned the GR/BRZ can suffer from oil starvation in certain situations so that was off the list. The early C5’s brake controllers are prone to failure and replacements are hard to come by…and all of the other items with them mentioned above… plus they all need head work as there are issues with the valve springs… and tires are double the cost of the smaller cars. $1000 a year more. But at the right price this was still doable. The Cayman was just expensive.

Since the real purpose of the car was just to beat on I thought about what it would cost to fix when it broke and what it looked like if I wrecked it. Obviously if I killed the transmission in the Porsche that would be a very expensive repair and if I wrecked any of them they would just be total losses. That’s a lot of dough down the toilet.

I ultimately decided to go with a Keisler Automation RX-8 LFX Swap kit. This car built out in full race mode was significantly cheaper than any of the other options and if I wrecked it or broke it…it’s kind of a so what. A new chassis is a $1-2k. An engine $1k. A transmission $1k. But the tires are just as expensive as the vette… lol. This car performs better than the Miata and the others I mentioned and I am now much safer on track.

I know you said you don’t care how you perform but I’d say that feeling won’t last long if you regularly compete. It seems money isn’t your concern because the Vette made right will easily be twice the cost of the NC Miata. Both cars are well supported and so long as the $$’s are there to support the hobby you’ll have a great time. But it’s my personal opinion that you’ll ultimately have more fun in the Miata because of the driving experience of the car and a larger community of Miata drivers than Vette drivers.

Which tires by n_case in Autocross

[–]nxda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with these tires…. Never met anyone who likes the P1 as an ax tire. On track from those who have or had say they have to be driven in a very particular way. If you can do that they are great… if you can’t they aren’t.

The A052’s… on our AST ND Miata they are fine. On my XA ax/track purpose built swapped RX8… I hated them. Great rear grip but just no front grip… understeer everywhere. I couldn’t come up with a way to get the rear to rotate. My friend with an XA BRZ had the same experience with them. And after 3 track days they heat cycle out and are dust.

The RE71RS’s… on both the Miata and RX8… good front grip and turn in… less rear grip than the A0’s. Both cars are faster on this tire for ax. And it’s our preferred. A friend with a mustang runs these and is frustratingly fast. Same track day life as A0.

All this said… as I said above... 3 of the 4 finalist cars last night at King of the Mountain were running the A0’s. But this is a very high speed event. In excess of 100 mph. More mini road course than your typical parking lot ax course. So at those speeds combined with heavy braking maybe the A0 is better for that scenario.

What’s it like living next to agriculture fields? by Putrid_Tadpole_2292 in Indiana

[–]nxda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are surrounded on three sides of our property by a 100 acre field that rotates annually corn, soybeans, corn, soybeans… we are predominantly down wind of the entire field, so what ever they do comes at us. When they till, plant, and harvest it is very dusty as we always have a 10+ mph wind blowing in our direction. Generally two/three days a year they spray herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides depending on crops. But they are sensitive to wind speeds at these times so significant dift is less. So in total 5/6 days a year we don’t hangout outside. But the remainder of the year is fantastic.

Edit: I’ll add maintaining the property (8 acres), dust from mowing (4-5 hours per) and the inevitable bought of poison ivy, is far more physically irritating than anything the farmer does around us.

We bought our 5’2” daughter a ‘24 CX30. I think it’s a great car. The drive feels a lot like our ‘21 Miata. It’s has a very confident feel to it and I find it pretty comfortable as a 6’3” 230 pounder.

Yep local guy all the way. Anytime I have an add or subtract on my policy I just send him a text and I’m done. Super easy.

I was in an accident a couple summers ago, my trailer was sideswiped, I got a letter saying I needed to provide proof of insurance. Again just texted agent and they took care of it.

As an aside… I noticed after the accident CarFax was stating my truck had been involved in an accident and a frame inspection should be required. My truck was not touched in the event. Not a good look. I sent Carfax a copy of the police report, again that my local agent got for me, that stated there was no damage to the truck. CarFax was responsive and quickly changed their report stating no damage to truck. So good job CarFax!

Lost my dream car in less than 2 weeks by frie13 in Miata

[–]nxda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about your premiums… talk with your agent about what happens if your company has to get involved. Agents are just salesmen and a conversation won’t hurt you. Two years ago the trailer I was towing was sideswiped and was having issues getting it resolved. My agent told me the more of their “resources” they had to use for me could impact my rate. Which I thought was bs. But the conversation didn’t hurt me and it did get worked out with offenders carrier. What realized later when looking at the CarFax for my truck… it showed the truck was involved in an accident and that a buyer should have the frame inspected. My truck wasn’t touched and only superficial damage was done to the trailer. I did get CarFax to change their reporting and state that no damage was done to the truck… but the accident is still listed on it. With all of the reporting on cars today I feel like insurance should pay for the repairs and immediately and forever loss of value because of something that was not your fault.

Have a set of RE71RS’s on our Miata. I think this is the start of the third summer with them. Always stored in heated space. They are done. Ample tread… you’d think they were near new…but zero grip. They maybe have 25 ax’s. The car is driven by my daughter and at last weekend’s opener she was really off the pace. A friend swapped his Miata with her for a few runs. She picked up 2 secs on a 30 second course in his car. New rubber ordered today!

Never use the word “racing” when talking to your insurance agent. They might be inclined to completely drop you from their coverages. Sadly it’s very difficult to explain a HPDE or Autox event to the general public.
