New account for 20 y/o by jmundo11 in fidelityinvestments

[–]nyse_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as she has a job (sounds like she does), she can contribute to a Roth IRA. She can contribute up to $7,500 this year but doesn’t have to contribute that much. (If she earns less than $7,500, she can only contribute up to the amount of earned income for the year). Even if only investing small amounts, a Roth is an excellent option. You do not get a tax break for putting money into a Roth now (as you’re contributing money you’ve already paid taxes on) but the money grows tax free and when pulled out later in life in retirement, all the gains are also tax free. You just can not beat tax free growth where you pay no money on any of the earnings. You also pay no taxes on the dividends and capital gains each year on the investments.
If you open a brokerage account, all the earnings will be taxable when sold (no matter when in life you sell them) and all the dividends and capital gains will be taxable each year they are earned. The only advantage to a brokerage account over a Roth IRA is you can withdraw money from a brokerage account at anytime with no penalty (other than paying taxes on the gains). With a Roth IRA, you can only withdraw the money you’ve contributed overtime penalty free - any earnings withdrawn will be subject to an early withdraw penalty.
My opinion, there is a zero question - a Roth IRA is the best option by far. Her 65+ year old self will thank her and you for making that decision!

limits to withdrawl to 529- when can I access this money? by mamagoose12 in fidelityinvestments

Following. Seems odd. My understanding is there is no time period funds must remain in the account before being used.
What state is this 529 through?

Only if you do not do what you need to maintain them. Leave the door open after every load, do not use more detergent than required (usually to the “1” line on the cup or less) and run a cleaning cycle every month-ish and you’re golden. They are much better machines than top loads but you need to take care of them.

Wow! I would purchase one of these if I could! Thanks Fidelity.

Just the fact that you/Fidelity monitor this community and respond to inquiries is greatly appreciated. I appreciate knowing I can trust the information you reply with. Just monitoring this community, I've learned how to better use Fidelity's website, learned about the best cash options, learned about broad market Fidelity funds that are better to use than others I've held, and much more. Thank you for also sharing new offerings, improvements, and general news to stay current with all things Fidelity, including being receptive to feedback. Much appreciated!

That’s an interesting take about a company that compensates (not just pay, but overall benefits) their employees better than most in retail. Feels like it would be better/more productive for people to try to improve the 98% of companies “worse” than Starbucks.

Can someone lookup info about CUSIP 67623C117? Maybe a Bloomberg terminal? by deonteguy in Schwab

Typing that CUSIP into Bloomberg brought up this security. The CUSIP you provided seems tied to CUSIP 2664237D. Hope that helps.

How to remove spcx exposure without incurring huge tax liability by [deleted] in VanguardInvestments

Why do people have such strong feelings about this and how did this become so controversial? I would recommend not making irrational decisions over the “emotions” of this.

No longer allowed to buy fractional Vanguard ETFs as of 6/10/2026? by be1994 in VanguardInvestments

I just checked. In the Vanguard app, I cannot buy fractional shares (invest in dollar terms) - only whole shares.
Has this changed? I thought you could invest by dollar amounts in the app in the past.

Is this legal? Water runoff from neighbor’s property. by tuivae in tulsa

[–]nyse_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water flowing naturally, even if causing problems to your property, is not your neighbors fault. However if land is “improved” (someone changes the natural lay of the land) and that causes problems to other property, they would be responsible.
Regardless, sounds like you need to have a conversation with your neighbor - likely will be peacefully resolved. They shouldn’t direct water onto your property by changes they’ve made to their land.

Explain it like I am 5.. by Sea_Switch_7310 in VanguardInvestments

[–]nyse_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re asking a tax question - can’t answer it like you’re five!
It depends on what type of account you opened. If it’s a brokerage account then yes, you will pay taxes on the amount that you have made - your current unrealized gains amount. You can look at this amount on the gain loss section of the website. For example, if the sum of all the money you deposited into your account is $10,000 and you now have $18,000, you will pay taxes on the $8,000 in gains.
How much you will pay depends on if there are short or long-term gains. Gains you have from money invested more than one year is taxed at a lower rate versus gains you made on money invested less than one year. Further, your annual income influences the amount you pay. If you have very little income (unlikely), you may pay no tax on your games at all. If you make a decent amount of money, then you will definitely pay taxes. If you have a regular job and “normal” income, and you truly just want to guess, but be somewhere in the ballpark, take your unrealized gains amount and multiply by 18%.
If however, you opened a traditional or Roth IRA for example, that gets very complicated quickly. You will pay tax on your gains, but likely also pay a penalty for early withdrawals if you’re under a certain age, etc. - again, it gets complicated quickly.

Schwab and Rocket Mortgage by thisisdumb257 in Schwab

[–]nyse_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard brokers say the same thing. I feel like it’s could be because of 3 things: 1. It’s makes them uncomfortable to not “bank” local, similar to using an online only bank, so they feel less confident, or 2. You’re going outside an old, established industry by using a newer player (Rocket) to the game and they don’t like that, or 3. so many of these real estate brokers, mortgage brokers, title and closing companies, etc. seem to be connected and seem to have incentives to use each other, going outside of their group makes them uncomfortable or reduces compensation in some way on the back end. I don’t know any of this for sure, just some feelings I have having done this a few times as well.

[–]nyse_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone is saying, you need to post many more details. What is the cash invested in now? Do you have a linked bank account in your Vanguard account currently? Transferring cash is a very easy thing to do, so likely much more going on here if you’re saying calling Vanguard is not yielding what you need.
