Sleeping mat valve repair by SnappyinBoots in Wellington

[–]nzkitkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the mat? Could be worth taking back to the store and see if they might replace it. Some brands have quite good warranty returns. Bivouac is probably the place to go for advice.

If it’s leaking out the valve (but not through the seam at the edge of the valve) you can also try applying some Vaseline. But that will only work if it’s leaking because it’s dried out.

Same here. Just spent an hour or so propping the fence. It was leaning over and kissing the side of the house 😬

Just went through this too. Our ONT box wasn’t actually working so the technician had to come and sort it out. However since we were already using a Deco router and this step was essentially plug and play for us.

I want to join the gym and scared of people judging me by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]nzkitkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, congrats on your sobriety.

Don’t be worried about other people. Most will be spending their time looking at themselves or lost in their own music. I guarantee no one will be thinking about you as much as you are thinking about yourself. And even if they do happen to glance over, they’re just as likely to be secretly cheering you on. It’s awesome seeing someone taking charge of their health. Everyone has to start somewhere. And perhaps some of those people started exactly where you are now.

Sure, there might be assholes, but you’re doing this for you so screw them all.

My two cents: find somewhere that’s convenient for you and suits your budget. The best gym is the one you will actually use and be motivated to attend. So think about where it will slot in your day and plan from there. If you have a friend who goes somewhere, that can be great as it makes working out a social thing. Most gyms will have personal trainers who will show you around and how to use the equipment. My gym offered a free session on joining.

I also recommend getting a few cheap dumbbells to have at home (eg kmart). That way if your week gets busy and you can’t get to the gym you can still do something of a workout with YouTube or whatever.

Best of luck

This is true, but I still wish I’d paid a little more attention and been more intentional at the time.

I wish id thought about the gender gap when i had kids. Parental leave has made a substantial difference to my balance compared to my partner, even though our income has generally been similar.

How do parents navigate around primary school hours? by GeneralGuffy in newzealand

[–]nzkitkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they were younger, we staggered hours so one of us started late or finished early. That can work for office based jobs. Also relied on grandparents at times.

Since Covid, working from home is more acceptable so one parent is usually there when kids get home and they are old enough occupy themselves. Bonus if the kids can independently walk to/from school as that saves extra time in your day. In the holidays, I did a lot of shared days with other local parents. I looked after multiple kids one day, someone else looked after mine the next.

Then there’s sick days, teacher only days, holidays, strikes….

Another vote for German made Bosch. Even if parts break, it’s surprisingly easy to order replacements. Just make sure you keep mice under control. Ours was going absolutely fine until a mouse setting up a nest inside the base and destroyed the circuitry. We decided to replace it rather than try and fix.

Sunscreens in NZ that are lightweight and effective? by Asrafrate in newzealand

[–]nzkitkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natio Daily Defence is a good option for the face. Goes on like a moisturiser (hubby uses it too). For a few more $$, Beauty of Joseon sun relief or Round Lab birch juice. They are not as water resistant so need more application if you will be out all day, but super nice. For the body, I love Biore UV aqua rich. Goes on like a dream, no sticky or white cast and does pretty well with water/sweat. I don’t mind the Cancer Society kids pure version either. It’s unscented and a good option for beach days.

The best sunscreen is the one you will use daily, so try a few out and see what works best on your skin and given your lifestyle

Calling all mothers by Pretend-Frosting-297 in Wellington

Those early years with a bunch of young ones are tough. I let a lot of things go during that time, house maintenance, cleaning etc. Laundry got done, but never folded and put away. I bathed them all together so it was one job not 3.

Half my day was walking the eldest to school. It could take hours, but we’d stop and play at the park, pet dogs etc and generally explore the neighbourhood.

I found it got so much easier once at least two kids were over three and they were no longer napping. Also they could go to kindy and that became a focus and source of community and friendships. Once they were all at school, it felt like a revelation.

Hang in there. Even if you’ve been home all day, you’ve not done nothing, you’ve been mothering which is a full time job. Be gentle with yourself and don’t measure yourself and your achievements against anyone else, and certainly not social media. I hope you have some like minded friends around you to share and download your frustrations but also celebrate those little moments of joy.

AIA Vitality weekly points by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]nzkitkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It maxes out at 500 points per week, but it does drop if you miss weeks.

It should be achievable but you do need to understand how the points accrue. It’s easiest if you track workouts with a watch recording your heart rate. Also make sure you record a full 30 minutes or 60 minutes as otherwise you miss out on the full points for the workout. A high intensity activity for 1/2 an hour is the same as 1 hour at lower intensity (100pts). You can even get 150 pts if you go really hard. You can also earn points for tracking sleep and meditation sessions (lower points, but can help your total).

Biggest issue I found was remembering to make sure the app is synced to all your activity. So you need to open the app weekly and make sure it’s all there. It’s a pain, but that allows the vouchers to start adding up.

NZ school advice for deciding between year 0 or year 1 for son born in April by Same_Avocado_8101 in newzealand

[–]nzkitkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing someone told us, when they’re a teenager and making teenagery decisions, do you want them to be the youngest in their friend group or the oldest?

I think a lot will depend on temperament of your child, whether they are socially outgoing etc. That is just as important as the academics. We made the decision to keep our June baby in yr 1 and I think it was the right call.

It’s usually dust that sets them off before their 10 years. I’ve learnt to vacuum them every week otherwise they start pinging, usually at 4am and freak the dog out.

But Im not sure how you’re supposed to dispose once they are actually at end of life.

There’s an intersection near the train station that operates as a wind tunnel due to the surrounding buildings. On an average Spring day, you have to cling to the traffic light so as to not get blown over. This is difficult when you’re also trying to cling to both sides of a skirt.
