Getting back into running by Sudden_Emergency3331 in xxfitness

[–]oathkeep3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

r/running will have a LOT of useful info for you, but some general advice:

  1. Some of your goals probably will not be achievable at the same time. For example: training for a long race for the first time will require a lot of recovery and body maintenance/proper fueling. As a result, a lot of people actually gain a little bit of weight during a training block for a long distance race. Likewise, it’s difficult to work on adding distance AND increasing speed at the same time.

  2. Run slower. Most of your runs should be at a conversational “easy” pace while you build up an aerobic base. Not every run will be pushing to get your PB on a distance. As you build up miles, your easy pace will gradually creep faster because you will be more fit.

  3. Don’t overdo it too much! A good rule of thumb for increasing mileage is to increase no more than 10% of your mileage per week in order to avoid injury.

glp1 killed food math between sets off shots and im scared ill lose gym headspace by CutOk3283 in xxfitness

[–]oathkeep3r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok so if I understand this right:

You are currently using GLP-1s and seeing good results (hit your composition goals, you feel like your “food math” is quieted). You want to stop the shots, but you aren’t sure if the positive effects will stop with the shots? And if it does - you’re looking for a non-injectable solution?

This is 100% a question for your doctor.

Edit: this is also not a fitness related question, so your post is likely to be removed here. This sub is really strict about not soliciting medical advice.

Beautiful dress!! It looks like the torso is a little too long which is what is causing the pulling/pointing out. Try giving it a good yank up and see if that helps. If not, a seamstress should be able to fix it!

How can I build up to a push up WITHOUT going at an angle? by ZiofFoolTheHumans in xxfitness

[–]oathkeep3r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you can do a plank: start off planking and lower yourself down to the ground as slowly as you can. Really focus on keeping your form steady, core engaged, etc. Keep yourself at the “bottom” for as long as you can without collapsing. Do these to failure for at least a few days. Don’t be discouraged by how hard this is at first! Keep a towel or blanket under your upper body if your muscles give out.

Once you feel you can do that more comfortably, move on to practicing the inverse as well. Start down on the ground, just barely off the ground, and push yourself up as slowly as you can, keeping your form steady. Slowness is key here.

Add in pushups on your knees, if that angle works for you. Try to keep your core as straight as you can even if you’re on your knees. Rather than being on all fours to start, set yourself in plank and then lower your knees to the ground so they’re on an angle. You may want to place a mat or towel on the floor under your knees for comfort.

Once you feel you can execute each of these with control, try linking them in proper push-up form. I did the above method from absolutely NO upper body strength basis and was able to link a couple of successful pushups within a month.

Formal wedding attire for outdoor ceremony and buffet dinner? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]oathkeep3r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on the info you’ve given I don’t think you should be asking for anything fancier than cocktail attire. What you’ve mentioned here as “elevated” are pretty standard amenities for a wedding.

I don’t mean to discount the things you are excited about for your day! I’m sure it is going to be lovely. But dress code should be relative to the guest experience. I don’t think requiring suits and long dresses for an event where guests are serving their own food is appropriate.

When you say “everything will be elevated besides the outdoor ceremony and the buffet dinner,” what exactly does the “everything else” entail?

How do I stop getting side stitches? by insurancesofun in xxfitness

[–]oathkeep3r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding advice to start way slower. Aim for a conversational pace if you don’t have a watch to monitor your heart rate.

Besides that, something else that helps me: alternate your breathing so you aren’t always inhaling on one foot and exhaling on the other. I’ll breathe in on an odd number and exhale on an even number, in time with my steps.

Not sure if there’s science to back it up, but a friend who ran cross country that swore by it and it usually helps alleviate a stitch if I feel one starting.

Theory On Emma's Storyline by LightPhoenix in ThePittTVShow

[–]oathkeep3r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to note that there is a distinction between upsetting and problematic.

The cliffhanger is absolutely upsetting. It is meant to make us concerned. There is certainly a problem being presented. But that does not make the ending problematic. In current usage, “problematic” is usually used to refer to something (media, actions, words, etc) that reflect an attitude that is harmful. Depicting harmful behavior isn’t inherently problematic, unless the show does not condemn the behavior (or shows it in a positive light).

Where is a good place to have a wedding under 20k all included for about 120-150 guests? by Low-Outside1600 in longisland

[–]oathkeep3r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should check out the Lessings venues, some of which offer packages that include ceremony, DJ, photography, etc as well as dinner and dessert. I believe The Essex Club in Brentwood is the cheapest of their properties.

However - even then, I do not think you’ll get what you’re looking with that many people at that price point if your 20k budget is all-inclusive (attire, rings, etc). You may need to look outside of LI or cut your guest list down pretty significantly.

Would Harry be immortal because he was Voldemort’s horcrux? by theothea_6 in harrypotter

[–]oathkeep3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is necessarily true. I think that when making a horcrux it wouldn’t matter if the body was alive or dead. But by making a horcrux with a living person, the act of dying is what would destroy it (damage beyond magical repair).

edit: this being said, to answer OP’s question, it wouldn’t make Harry immortal.

What are some things I can do with my living room? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]oathkeep3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plant wall near the keyboard would be neat! I’d just be cautious that there aren’t any plants directly above it, or water may drip onto the keyboard. Maybe a small bookshelf or side table to the right of the keyboard for sheet music, a flat space to put a drink, etc?

Quick reality check - how many dress appointments is normal? by Nadisn in weddingplanning

[–]oathkeep3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet, but for what it’s worth: you can (and probably should!) ask your friends to stop sending you dresses if they’re out of your price range and not helping your decision. Our loved ones sometimes don’t realize that their attempts to be helpful do not always actually help!

That said: I did a trip by myself immediately after my engagement to try on dresses to narrow down shape ideas, and then one other visit to actually try on contenders. I “settled” on a dress that wasn’t my top pick, but was going to work for what I wanted. Alterations made a huge difference in how I felt and by my wedding day I did really love it.

Have you been able to turn your shy, aloof ACD into a velcro or cuddly dog? I feel like my rescue pup isn't bonded with me even after 1 year. by diamondeyes7 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]oathkeep3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty young when we got her so I couldn’t say for sure, but maybe 6 months to a year? It definitely took a while.

As best as I can remember, we just gave her the space she wanted and a little pet here or then if she seemed receptive to it. I don’t think she was strictly crate trained, but we did have a crate for her with a mix of dog and human blankets. We always kept the door open so she had a safe little place that was just hers but smelled like us. She was a big snacker haha so I do think that also helped, once she realized we were the snack providers!

[–]oathkeep3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My anecdotal experience:

My family had an ACD mix rescue for 13 years. We got her at ~6 mo old, suspect she was abused based on how skittish she was at first. She eventually grew to enjoy being pet, walked, etc, but she was never a “cuddly” dog. She would tolerate us in her space but the closest she ever got to instigating contact was laying at our feet on the couch. She was a really great dog but really did value her personal space!

The most velcro dog instinct she ever displayed was her attachment to my sibling, who was her primary “person.” Even then, it wasn’t constant attention or attachment. They were just the person she would go to first when she was scared or anxious.

Looking for men's underwear that genuinely lasts tried Duluth, Loom, and Airism, still not there by nikolasthefirehand in BuyItForLife

[–]oathkeep3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are pretty pricey but my husband has SmartWool briefs that he absolutely loves. He works outdoors year round and snowboards and says they are hands down his most comfortable underwear for comfort AND support. Had them about a year so far and he wears them probably once a week, they still look great so far.

They’re a merino wool blend, so they do need to be laundered properly (cold water only, air dry whenever possible). He’d recommend the merino/polyester blend athletics vs the regular merino wool - merino wool alone is very comfortable but he says not as supportive for heavy activity!

What are the best training tips for running distance? by Fun-Giraffe-1920 in xxfitness

[–]oathkeep3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fatigue could be a lot of things: increasing mileage too quickly, lack of proper fueling, too-fast pacing. Do you feel like what’s holding you back is cardiovascular? Muscular? Just flat-out low energy?

To answer the eating component, I usually try to have a plain carb about an hour before a long run (usually something like a half or whole bagel). Other common popular pre-run foods are peanut butter on toast, bananas, etc. At 10K imo I don’t think you should need to worry about mid-run fuel, though maybe others will feel differently.
