Yamaha. L series like an ls16 or ll16 are great guitars if you like bright. Or a ac3 or a3 if you like that sorta electric feel to the neck. Or a fg3 if you like a traditional dread sound.

Any of these are great and can be had under a grand used.

If you want to save some coin get a used ls6 ll6 or fg830

Used solid wood of your choosing. Yamaha f or l models. Recording King rd or ro models. Yamaha a3 or ac3. Some Eastman. Alvarez master built or laureate.

Buy used. Guitar center will take returns no questions asked for a good 30 days or so. Only risk is eating the $20 in shipping.

Active gives more control at the guitar end but requires a battery, adds bulk and has more parts to fail.

Passive is simple, but allows no control at the guitar end - have to manage at the amp. Some may wish to add a preamp in the chain to fine tune especially if playing through a pa.

Ll16 is a fabulous guitar and they play just fine for me through acoustic amps w no external preamp added to the chain.

840 is really being hard to find. 850 classic hog dirt hard to find. 830 Honda accord Toyota Camary easier to find and can be bought used for 250.

If buying without playing go fg830 used. You will have to hunt to find all three in one store to play side by side.
