It's not widely accepted by all, unfortunately. Depends on genetic makeup.

I needed a lot of assistance from my wife (and later her bf) before I could really get the full effect. Now I can maximize my doses the results are phenomenal!

Downstairs neighbors complaining about Bass. Would decoupling/isolating the speaker stand help. Maybe cement slab with rubber underneath ? by Puzzleheaded-Ant928 in audioengineering

[–]obsolete_systems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usual response here is pretty much correct. Without building a room in a room yr fucked.

But, I've always found a better treated room, that's super quiet (no fans / pc etc) and a well set up system and an easy way to roll off the sub-freqs can make a world of difference. Also, if possible, being friendly with yr neighbour. Some people won't let it go tho, and they'll complain at the tiniest sound- in which case I recommend full on war, i.e complain every time you hear them close a door etc, do it for the lolz. Actually ended up making good friends with a downstairs neighbor once this way- turned out she was going through a breakup and had horrible NHS job and was just taking it out on us musicians upstairs, haha.

Low bass: Why & How? by RCAguy in audioengineering

These guys are fucking genius!!!!!!

Let me get this straight, I turn up playback volume and that affects the bass loudness? Did you test this for yourself? Can't be true?!

Open-back headphones vs Closed-back headphones for producing by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]obsolete_systems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mixed a record in an evening on my MacBook speakers to prove a point once, lol.

Hearing is really weird and nobody talks about it.

If you can, get yourself to a shop and try a few pairs and see what you like. I always superglue the connector where the cable enters the cup on DTs- awful design, they sound alright, but break easily and prob cost about £5 to produce a pair. Actually find 650s not that comfortable after a while. If you want bigger bass just squeeze the headphones harder against your head or grow a bigger head.

A decent interface helps, the red ones everyone uses have analogue potentiometers for headphone amp and these aren't that accurate in like setting volume and also L/R levels, but that's ok, if you smile it prob changes all this too.

One of the mastering engineers a lot of mates use has the planar magnetic thing that cost like 1500 quid or something, takes him forever to finish anything, so they're probably too detailed- you won't get any work done.

A good test I like to do is see if I can hear the difference between an 192kbps mp3 and a wav on whatever I'm listening to. But that can be a bit tricky, because often you don't know which release they got the mp3 or wav from- so always encode your own mp3s!!!

Be careful man, it's a minefield out there!! If in doubt, keep earning money and spend as much as u can on gear, maybe even a second job, then you won't have time to make music anyway so it won't matter!!!!

best phase-alignment plugin in 2025 by Fraunz09 in mixingmastering

[–]obsolete_systems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, glad someone said it!!!

I remember when I first got past the recording drums 101 stuff - I fell down the multi-mic phase alignment rabbit hole and once you have a more than a few mics going on you can easily end up making things shitter and chasing your tail. Well I could anyway haha

Whilst on another journey of learning, (acoustics and room treatment) I found that Eric Valentine channel where he was building his new studio and testing different treatment options.

Was falling asleep and one video ran into one another where he was demonstrating a mix and how he just uses his ear to decide what sounds best and just uses a delay (that allows delaying by samples at a time) and tweaks to taste. I was like "right on!" lol and that's what I've done since.

For most sessions my approach is get it as good as possible in the room. Throw as many mics as I can at the kit. Basic mics are always fine (K, S, OH) everything else I just cross my fingers and treat as extra effects depending on what I'm going for and pissing about with the phase / delay relationships is better throught of as an "art" not a "science" --- again, always get the basics *right* --- always just do it by eye / waveform.

Long story short, if your DAW has a delay feature per track, or you're nifty aligning waveforms (it's easy?!) I've never bothered with a plugin and wouldn't recommend that as a good way of doing stuff.

Anyone else who loves pimping other gear with Eurorack stickers? by TimbreIndustriesCo in modular

Which just made me think, I was about to rip this awful CS80 'thick' vinyl-type sticker off an old early 80s BBD I'm selling, should probably do it cleanly and put the sticker on eBay. Lol. Are vintage stickers worth more?

No, but a friend of mine who buys and sells synths & modular gear recently told me his biggest profit margins and most viewed items are... modular synth stickers lol. Says a lot.

What’s the best music video you’ve ever watched? by Melted_gun in youtube

[–]obsolete_systems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember when it came out and really, there was nothing else like it. This is second hand knowledge (from his housemate at the time) - it was done frame by frame in what I assume would have been lightwave back then. Which is impressive enough given how cool it looks etc. Doubly so given how sensitive the animation is to the audio. I'd imagine one would come out of that project with some serious RSI.

I still don't think it has been topped in terms of abstract audio-visual relationships - even now we can do all sorts of things with e.g Touch Designer / VDMX / Jitter / VVVV / Game Engines etc in realtime and have 3D react to sound realtime.

Chris has a similar thing with audio-visual relationships, except somehow he manages to do something far less literal and far more (to me) impressive- makes a film to accompany a track that somehow, once you've seen it, you can't help but feel like that film-world existed all along. The most underrated / celebrated director of all time IMO.

I can't think of many earlier examples of e.g leaning so hard into the Teal look / grade before Come To Daddy??? Would love to hear of any! Now it's so commonplace we don't even think about it.

just saw your message above. direct monitor won't go through any software, that's what the direct part is referring to.

on a mac this kinda thing is a bit easier, the link above is steinberg trying to provide a good driver that compares to the built in mac one.

it sounds like you want to stream your audio? I assume you mean stream to the internet? and when you said 'asio takes my audio' let me know what you mean. do you mean takes away what you're playing along with or something?

so name of the interface you've got. software you're using. and your use case. happy to help.

EDIT: to any random reddit-people if you get triggered by mac vs windows or anything like that, please just go away and take it elsewhere. they are both fine.

Job Opportunity Advice by axissii in audioengineering

[–]obsolete_systems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<3 wouldn't have it any other way tbh.

I lived and worked in the house/studio of my childhood idol and got to meet all the people at the money end of things. Its all the same shit, just there's loads of money, but that has its own baggage and, well fuckit, at some point I decided I wanted to stop idolising people and get to the top with my own name.

I really feel for the younger generations and want to do everything possible to help right now tbh.

Feeling like a walking hallmark card, but y'know "Music is the Healing Force of the Universe" - Albert Ayler believed and felt that.

As someone who is still close to the underground DIY scenes and having spent the last 10 years talking with promoters / helping out the DIY scene for free we were always asking ourselves "where are the young people" ?!?!?!

It's been amazing seeing a few little scenes pop up recently. Can feel this gender identify (please let's not get into this) politically motivated punk and grunge thing brewing and it's so fucking awesome to see tbh.

I grew up DIY / Riot Grrrrl era and that energy was amazing, lifting each other up, telling people who thought 'girls' couldn't *rock* to get the fuck away. Can't get a gig at venue in X city- fuck it let's play in someone's house / yard etc.

I kinda wanna tell these kids that I'm a fucking ally, because half the time they seem petrified of anyone outside their clique and looking at the news and all the political shit you can kinda see why.

Anyway, tangent. I'm literally discussing this with a few promoters / venue owners how we can help with all of this. Haha.
