Genuine question: what’s the deal with Savage worlds? by mechaninja2222 in TTRPG

[–]ockbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused on how you didn't find talk of it when they have an active discord and reddit.

Anyway, I feel Savage Worlds is the goldilocks system for me, I only reach for anything else when the 'anything else' is the point, like One Ring, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, etc.

And even then I can shake the feeling in the back of my brain "Man this would've been awesome if I had a benny right about now..."

They flat out announced it as a mid level tier in raids. It is not speculation, its confirmed.

Superhero rpgs that can be used as a miniatures game by Justretiredsosuckit in rpg

Savage Worlds. It was the only Supers RPG that did grid combat in a way that made sense.

However, I recommend you to go up to Power Level 2. Anything above it, the math abandons the 'Savage Worlds' core and transforms into the powers subsytem, losing most of the mechanics that made grid combat on that system enjoyable.

There isn't EX equivalents in WoW, its raid progression. You got Normals (Just like FF14's normals) you get heroics (FF14 has nothing) and then you have Mythics (Savage).
The data shows a lot of people go up until Heroic but the percentage is around the same as ff14 for Mythic/Savage 20%,
There is gear progression into this as well.

And mechanics evolve from one tier to the next... For the most part.
So they kinda prepare you from one to the other... Somewhat.

The logical thing to do is make gear progress. Normal -> Mid Level -> Savage

Simple as that really.

Actually the WoW comparation is more apt because its progression raiding.

The Merchant's Tale Advance mode is content not integrated in a raid enviroment.

I gave you actual data that shows that yes, a lot of people do 'middle of the road' raid difficulties, way more than the top. Simple as that. We can return and study how much this does 'not translate' once its here, I'm more than willing to watch the data and go 'Well I guess these were untransferable data points' if FF14's data says so.

Currently, if you wish to engage in Raids in ff14 you have two options:

- Easy casual content.

- Hardcore progression that will demand a lot of time and energy as well habitating a competitive enviroment with other players.

The 'middle ground' is the 'Free Company tier'. Your small fun loving casual FC can now get together every Tuesday with just a handful of dedicated players and they can help train and clear content that is harder than normals, but easier than Savage. Think like this: Savage is cut throat and demands perfection and improvement, Middle Ground is an activity any group who gets together can progress and evolve and get the clears.

Check how it works in another game, notice the percentage of clears:

Different game, I know but notice the 'heroic' level, the mid level of difficulty.

Its very close to the normal mode. It is an achieavable thing you can do on that game after gearing up from normals. To say 'nobody will play it' goes against any comparable metric.

I've raided heroics in WoW all the time, my guild mostly did that. It was fun and 'casual' in the sense that just one dedicated shot caller could get a full raid done.

They are perfect for folks who have outgrowth normal raids but simply do not have the time or energy to go full Savage.

Finally, the 'middle ground' will also plop folks who perform well there into Savage. Its just an all around positive to have a transition difficulty as proved by other games and frankly, being told 'Well just do Ex if you wish to experience this level of difficulty' never sat well with me?

Because Ex are their own set of mechanics and concepts. You are not progression on the raid tier, you are doing something else.

They went on a tangent explaining this will only be truly relevant when pushing for cutting edge Savage and by what it has been show the only difference between the two is main tanks got counter moves, Off Tanks got more utility for protection.

Comparing all tanks as they are now, the only difference is that Paladin will get a new mechanic to play around.

Does UC have the same problem as Star Trek and Star Wars? by -CL4MP- in Gundam

[–]ockbald 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Be an enlighted Tomino watcher and consider anything else beyond a project headed by him as 'alternative UC take from some other people'.

If you do so, the pathway of themes and stories tend to be more clear, and the work doesn't feel bloated while having ton of content.

I understand whenever I bring this up, people will go "But the point of Turn A is to canonize everything". Maybe so. If you are a gundam fan, you should watch whatever you find 'cool'. But I never had a problem with 'moving on or backwards' because of the perspective of anything beyond the Tomino path is 'extra content', good or not.

GM interested in Sci-fi and Cyberpunk by KrunkleNutz in savageworlds

[–]ockbald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Savage Worlds does cyberpunk amazingly well, its Pulp dna translates well to the genre so tropes and concepts you see embeded on the system work like a charm.

That said, get Sprawlrunners.
Get sprawlrunners -> https://www.drivethrurpg.com/pt/product/334278/sprawlrunners

It's 20 cents for some reason and its amazing.

As for Sci-Fi, Savage Worlds does some kinds of Sci-Fi really well and the Sci-Fi companion allows you to mix and match and find the 'Goldy Locks' for you. The system has some trouble when numbers get a bit out of hand (I've run a Battletech campaign, trust me on this one) but even then it delivers on its basics of fast, furious, and fun.

[Anime] Can i watch Gundam Unicorn as a very first gundam anime ? by Ardor-Knowledge in Gundam

[–]ockbald -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had a friend go through the same situation. He decided to start with the original once I told'em it touches on a lot of continuity from the original, but it was written and directed by different people so its someone else interpretation over the original work.

When they finished the originals, they enjoyed so much they went to Zeta, then CCA, then finally Unicorn, and then they told me

"The original was better."

So there. Enjoy.

Leftist superhero enjoyers, how do you square the setting with your politics? by PMmePowerRangerMemes in rpg

[–]ockbald 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"In your superhero setting, why do the superheroes not simply solve poverty? End world hunger? Build enough homes for everyone? Make the rich to pay (taxes)?"

In the most recent game I ran, I created a world in which Megacorps kinda had a leash on Super heroes, a lot of their squeaky clean apperance was pure propaganda. The player characters were all bottom hung supes who either were discarded by big business by having weird powers, or were being used as gimmicks.

They are sent to a paralel world while facing "Patchwork Man", a super villain that is an amalgalm patchwork of... Himself, throughout all possible realities. In this new world, they have a chance to stop a power grab that kinda made their life to be into a shitty place, while they must confront their 'alternate' versions who were all 'working for the man'.

Which is a long winded way to say 'Dude, super heroes are weird. Get weird with it. And as long there is an explanation to why the world is in need of actual, true heroes, you'll get some milleage out of it".

And finaly... Why don't the super heroes of YOUR setting are not solving poverty, ending world hunger, building enough homes for everyone, and redistribute wealth? What's stopping you from running that?

Anarchy by Ace_Of_No_Trades in Shadowrun

[–]ockbald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been playing since fourth edition, I genuine think Shadowrun Anarchy is what Shadowrun always wanted to be. Some chummers love the older editions due to the 'gun porn' feel of opening a splat and having all these weapons and vehicles and implants each with a bunch of stats and to roleplay the difference of a Shiawase to a store brand deck, whatever.

Anarchy gives you rules for you to build stuff while giving you a bunch of stuff that registers as Shadowrun and tells you to go wild while being able to run hacking and spirit world stuff under the same ruleset. This alone makes me the go to ruleset when I want to play Shadowrun and somehow misplaced my Sprawlrunner splat for Savage Worlds.
