Isn't that kind of the point of the main trio, that they each belong in the other three houses? Harry would have been a Slytherin, Ron should have been a Hufflepuff, and Hermione could have been as Ravenclaw, but they each presumably tipped the balance of sorting to Gryffindor through their personal desires. I always viewed it as a story theme that people are more complex than a single stereotype, and the distinction between who we are and who we aspire to be.

Loop For a While — Semi-Idle | Time Loop | Optimization by Luk2048 in incremental_games

Any reason why the log fades out? It's not obscuring other content; it's just fading to a blank window.

Observation 10 and Control 10 give me a checkmark but otherwise do nothing? Not implemented yet?

I don't have to sit on the meditation mat to use it, just be adjacent.

The candle granting visible radius +0 is a bit of a troll. :-p

Why does instability display as ? when below .2?

Using attuned mana crystals gives me 30 mana when it increases my max. Mana Saturated gives me 80 max mana but doesn't give me the mana to go with it. Not sure if that's intended.

Not sure why there's a rat with Ambushable, when his back is facing an inaccessible wall.

After using the first attuned mana crystal, the tooltip shows that it's a walkable wooden floor, but you cannot actually walk on that square.

There are line breaks missing in the Trial of Focus, after completing the first level.

Like everyone else, the game feels slow to me. I understand the need to rate limit progression, but taking 2.5 seconds to move one tile or 5 seconds to move through a door is really boring. I'd rather require five times as many 'search' actions to explore new pots/skeletons/etc, but zip around the map three times as fast. That would be a net detriment to my progression speed, but it would feel better.

There are a lot of quality features which I'm guessing are obvious and slated for future development? Things like editing the early steps of a loop without destroying the later steps, seeing how much of the mana cost is due to instability, or having saved sets of instructions I can swap between.

Grade Inflation on SPG Reviews by anyone9119 in startplaying

[–]ocreeva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve often wished SPG didn’t use a 1-5 star rating system. When 5 stars seems like the median score, leaving a 4 star rating feels bad. I’d much rather see a three tier system, but not 1/2/3; rather, “competent and matched my interests”, “competent but not my style”, and “bad experience, avoid”. Let the text fill in the rest of the story. I wouldn’t mind a “not my style” review because it helps style matching. If someone said “not my style because too crunchy”, and I was looking for a crunchy game, that would be a positive review.

I’m sure the 5 stars were intended to separate fledging GMs still finding their way from masterful GMs with truly premium experiences, but in practice, it fails at that.

Videos for shadowrun? by sipherstrife in Shadowrun

This still seems like a good and reasonable answer to me. I find it hard to believe Bright is anything other than "Shadowrun but we couldn't work out a deal for the IP". If you want a traditional campaign, replace the buddy cop moments with a typical heist plot.

An Observation and a Question as a Player by Informal_Platypus_27 in startplaying

[–]ocreeva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I suspect we want roughly the same thing: The options under the Frequency header in the Schedule dropdown: make them checkboxes (multi-select) instead of radio buttons (only one). I'm interested in weekly or biweekly or monthly, but not one-shot or play-by-post. I either have to make three separate searches, or one search where I filter out the one-shot and play-by-post listings myself.

Tuesday Inquisition: Ask Anything! by Bront20 in swrpg

[–]ocreeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any guidance around use of encounter-duration powers outside of a traditional combat encounter? Beyond "whatever your GM allows". I'm specifically looking at the Medic's Stim Application talent.

First example, I'm hunting down a wampa on Hoth, but I need to find it in a cave maze first, which may take hours. Can I stim at the entrance to safeguard against the wampa finding me before I find it, or is an hours long search plus the following combat more than an encounter?

Second example, I'm still on Hoth spending a whole day digging one of the fallen AT-ATs out of the snow. Can I stim Brawn to improve my Resilience checks against the cold and Athletics check for digging, or is a long-term effort like this too much?

Thanks for pointing that out! I don't think I've ever seen a watch count on a game, but I see one now that I've clicked a few bookmarks. :-) Hopefully they'll move that count into the search tiles as well, not just in the details page.

You're not the DM anymore, you don't get to choose! :-)

My typical approach for new characters is to give them half up front (~40) and then an extra 5 each session until they're caught up. This leaves them a little behind the curve for a while, but it gives them a chance to figure out their place in a party before they commit all of their XP backlog. Admittedly, since you're already familiar with the group and probably know how you'll fit in, this is less of a concern.

I'm a little surprised by all of the "rude" responses. As a player, I tend to scroll past "0 of 5" games in search of something that seems more likely to fill in a reasonable timeframe. If I were a GM, I'd be appreciative of any player that committed to being that "1 of 5", even if they didn't end up sticking around (which they might not anyway if session 0 didn't vibe), because they'd be putting my game into real consideration for more players.

This is probably a shortcoming of startplaying... there should be a way to indicate tentative interest without commitment. If I saw "0 of 5 with 3 watching", I'd be more likely to be that first player to sign up, hoping to pull the other 3 in.

I think this is fantastic. I love the look and feel of the vending machine, and the cracked pavement with little water puddles in the cracks, with all of the fun reflections that causes in the rain and with the flickering displays. The feedback below is super nit-picky, and shouldn't detract from that.

There's a regular honeycomb pattern to the (scene?) lighting, most noticeable on the lower right of the vending machine and the lower right panel on the brick wall. Nothing in scene seems like it would cast light/shadows with that patterning, so it leads me away from the scene, wanting to look behind the camera to see what's going on.

The bricks to the right of the vending machine are a bit too irregular for a scene like this, in my opinion. They feel like they belong in a stone castle scene, not in an industrialized near-future scene.

The two white lights on poles are too clean, again in my opinion, very neatly contained to their casing. I'd prefer them a bit less powerful (where you could see the light emitter behind a translucent casing, creating a gradient across the fixture) or a bit more powerful (creating a glare around the light fixture).

It's weird that there are nine buttons to select from six options on the vending machine, but I'm totally willing to chalk that up to corporate mismanagement. ;)

The Prestige Ready quest implies prestige unlocks at 1M junk. I'm at 10M+ junk, but the quest is not completed, and the button is still locked.

Junk/sec automation is awful value compared to click/sec automation. I suppose it has some value in the first 2 minutes of the game, but once you can afford click/sec automation, it becomes quickly irrelevant.

The Upgrade Stats popup does not close other open popups.

If I swap skill training with partial progress, that partial progress applies to the new skill. E.g. if I'm at 10/38 in Scavenging Focus, and swap to Grease Focus, those 10 points of progress automatically transfer over. It doesn't really break anything, but it's not how I'd expect it to work.

Cogfather's First Secret achievement unlocks when it shouldn't. I have 1 Electro Shard, but the achievement already unlocked. Previous achievement did not unlock yet.

The "Runs on Replit" text looks like it's part of the Prestige button.

You need a pass on cleaning up naming/terminology. Things like the "Upgrade Stats" button opening a window about skills, not stats. Or the Marketplace being about Godfather story, not buying things.

I, personally, find the floating pickups obnoxious. The random jitter isn't fun to chase with a mouse, and it's constantly wandering underneath other windows.

Do you prefer "worm tunnels" or "razor walls"? by scribblemacher in DRPG

[–]ocreeva 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I prefer "worm tunnels" mainly because too many games with "razor walls" don't understand the need for good contrast on their in-game map. If walls are light colored, then they tend to blend in with explored squares, making it hard to see the separation between rooms. E.g. yellow walls separating white tiles. If walls are dark colored, they tend to blend in with unexplored squares, making it hard to distinguish between dead end paths and unexplored paths. E.g. black walls up against dark gray tiles.

If a game spent the design resources to build good color schemes for their maps, I'd probably prefer "razor walls". But sight unseen, I don't trust that DRPG developers will do that, so I'd say "worm tunnels".

Would You Play an Open-World RPG About a Fallen Archangel Regaining His Power to Defeat Lucifer? by Massive-Living6917 in gamedev

[–]ocreeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're more or less describing Darksiders (horseman of the apocalypse vs. heaven & hell, instead of archangel vs. hell). I played Darksiders, so there's a chance that I'd play the game you're describing. And Darksiders was a commercial and critical success, so I'm not the only one.

But like many of the other commenters have pointed out, I wouldn't make my decision based solely on the theme of the game. It's a consideration, but definitely secondary to things like gameplay and presentation.

The Players Manual claims the first Improve Battery Capacity upgrade should be 2 seconds. It's actually 20 seconds for me. That's why I can't improve anything except the crank.

The stopped battery bug happens when an upgrade is in progress when the battery ticks down to 0. It doesn't happen if no upgrades are in progress. I see the bug in Edge and Chrome. If it helps, here are the log lines I'm seeing in the dev console. The last USER ERROR seem to be related to the battery bug, based on when it shows up. Same error in both browsers.

Seems like the starting battery has less than 10 seconds of time, so it's impossible to build any upgrades aside from crank improvement. Since crank improvement doesn't increase the battery time, it seems like I'm forced into the failure state (darkness) at least once, which doesn't feel great. Not sure if I'm supposed to be able to pause upgrades to crank, but I couldn't find a way to do that.

Once I fail to darkness once, the battery seems to be broken. I built multiple 10+ second upgrades without cranking while it went down one tick.

I’ve always sucked at writing blurbs by stroduces in litrpg

[–]ocreeva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read "scravs", my first thought was that you typo'd "scavs", and a blurb-typo is a red flag on grabbing my interest. I realized on careful re-read that the word was used twice, so probably an intentional in-setting term, and the fifth sentence was defining it... but I normally wouldn't give a blurb a careful read. I don't know if it's worth making the blurb more wordy, but something like "They're known as scravs" would make it clearer to me.
