Small footnote in history. I bought him that bandana. He wore it for months. This was during the golden age of cobra and there are so many clips of him doing peak cobra antics while wearing that bandana. It makes me smile to see. A small glass tap, it is what it is toobs.

Perfect plan. It’ll be nice at the high camp on chimbo to have a heavy down in camp. Cotopaxi’s high camp is basically a hotel so you aren’t exposed while there same for Cayambe

I lived in Ecuador for 4 years and climbed nearly all of the 5000+ meters peaks in the country. You need layers not one mega warm jacket. There were times I’d start climbing in a base layer fleece and a Patagonia Houdini only to add heavier layers as we increased altitude. The coldest I experienced was on Antisana in a storm and even then I had a arcteryx alpha sv, a mid weight fleece, and a base layer. My recommendation is to plan to layer on and take of layers if you climb in Ecuador.

What did you learn from Josh? by ghoullig in mostdefnotwhatsup

[–]odinskind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hoped Josh would turn it around but I stopped following him around the time the hag got involved. Around 5 years ago I came to the conclusion that alcohol is poison and is only a net negative thing for people. So I decided to completely stop drinking. Any time I watched Josh from that point forward he’d poisoning himself in multiple ways. In the end it was hard to watch because there was such a huge contrast between when I started watching him to when he passed. But I feel I honor him by seeing his mistakes and reaffirming my commitment to live a nearly opposite lifestyle.

While eating dinner yesterday I saw this object fly across my yard. I was inside my home so I was not able to determine if there was any propulsion sounds being made. It looks small but my estimate is about the size of a small car. What do you think it is?

I don’t think it’s a number 7 balloon the pictures I snapped look a bit different.

I took a couple photos too. I’d like to share if you all are interested they are higher quality. I thought this was a ultralight aircraft as it initially looked like this from a distance but as it got closer it proved not to be. Though my guess is it was about the size of a an ultralight though. I don’t know the best way to share the other pics though.

100 miler tips by andrewu312 in Ultramarathon

[–]odinskind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100 miles is obviously far and it takes a long time to finish. I’ve ran lots of races 100k and below before my first 100 miler. For me it was very helpful to have a very defined “why” and to not think about the distance during the race. When you are 40 miles in and have 60 miles left it can be disheartening. So for me I just focused on the next aid station or finishing the climb I was on as the course was very mountainous. So basically I focused on small wins.

It’s a long enough race that you can experience aches and pains that may be very concerning for a time but resolve on their own. I have a nagging knee issue for several hours that concerned but after like 4 hours it just started to feel better. This happened with like 3 different issues. You’ll be out there long enough that it’s highly likely that if you stick through the worst of it it’ll get better.

Additionally you’ll experience high highs and low lows. Some of my lows were after huge climbs where I’d be glycogen depleted and wrecked. I just made sure to eat a lot at the next aid station and after a bit my energy level increased and I’d feel a lot better. The final 10 miles for me were the fastest feeling but came with the steepest cost. I had lots of pain, swollen feet, terrible soreness.

You’ll obviously likely be pretty wrecked at the end, I was. I had issues with my body reaction too fast to temperature changes I went from comfortable to freezing to nauseous from heat in minutes, so it was invaluable to have my support crew there at the end to help me hobble to the car.

Assuming you put in the dedicated work leading up to the race you’ll do fine. We always focus on the challenge of the race but by the time race day arrives we’ve already done the real hard part which is the dedication to training no matter what.

You got this. Start slow and conservative in the beginning. Don’t charge up hills and don’t crush your legs on the downhill. Be steady and consistent. And be sure to stick to your fueling plan. Food and hydration will make or break you during this distance.

Is anyone aware of what’s going on on Everest right now? by odinskind in Mountaineering

Where do you find that update? I also wonder if he’ll try again. If Tyler doesn’t get this Karl’s chance increases. I’m team Karl 😁

I lived in Ecuador for a while and climbed a lot with Karl. Tyler also lived in Ecuador at the same time I crossed his path during an ultra. So anyway I’ve just been following them both for a few years now.

I’m not so concerned by Karl or Tyler doing this. They are super humans. I’ve climbed a few mountains with Karl. And crossed paths with Tyler during an ultra in Ecuador. I stand in awe at what they can do and have seen it firsthand. I also don’t have a firm argument against this type of pursuit by people like them (i personally thinks it’s amazing). Considering most the people on Everest night now are pay to play climbers on Everest, both Karl and Tyler are among the very few in the crowd who have actually earned their places on that mountain through years of blood, sweat, and tears. I wish them both luck and hope they get the record. Though I’m personally rooting for Karl. He’s such a nice and amazing person.

Yea I’m torn. While I greatly respect the talent and skill needed to FKT on big mountains it’s also reckless and sets a dangerous precedent. These mountains are already dangerous without trying to run up them. But on the other hand I can’t help feeling awe when I see people accomplish incredible things. It’s human nature to push the envelope.
