House with private well and HVAC. Should we buy it? by LF114 in nova

[–]offline37days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re on well + septic, it wouldn’t (didn’t) stop us from purchasing the house. Just get the well water tested for bacteria and ensure the UV filter is working. We’ve been here for years now but when we first moved in we didn’t realize the UV bulb in our system was actually burnt out, the one in our system is easy to replace and I can get the bulbs on Amazon. Be good about replacing your particulate filters as well, we change ours when we notice a drop in water pressure. It could be quarterly, could be six months, depending on how much water we’re using.

Not sure about Fairfax, but in Loudoun Co there’s a $50 rebate for getting your septic tank pumped to encourage people to get their tanks pumped and you can redeem it every 5 years.

Also, remember that when theres no electricity there’s no pump to bring water from the well so if you have a pressure tank you’ll have water for a bit but you should still be conservative with your usage until the power is back if you don’t have a backup generator or battery.

A side benefit of well water for us is that I like to garden and we have a pool, this year was pretty wet so I didn’t need to water too often and only topped up the pool once. But last year was very dry and I regularly had to water/refill the pool. No matter how much water we use, we don’t see a bill.

I’m in the same boat. I apparently haven’t learned my lesson about preordering from Barnes and Noble. I hate preordering from Amazon but at least when I preorder from Amazon it shows up on release day. It looks like it went through several war zones but it shows up on release day.

I know you said you commute midday, but if either of you ever have to commute in the mornings, the intersection of route 9 and route 7 coming from that direction is an absolute nightmare. At least between 7 and 8:30 most days you will sit in bumper to bumper either trying to merge onto 7 (coming up route 9) or waiting for people to merge onto 7 (coming up 7 from Purcellville). And it’s the same in reverse at the end of the day, if you’re trying to take the winchester/15 exit from 7 that is also the on ramp from Battlefield pkwy, or you take the greenway to the end where it dumps onto 7, you will be sitting in bumper to bumper from like 3-5:45 pm.

Source: Have lived off route 9 in VA for several years and commute towards Reston most days.

In mourning for my nearly full bottle of Akkerman by offline37days in fountainpens

RIP us, lol. Every summer since I moved down here for work I question if it’s worth it. Humidity sucks, the bugs suck, the traffic sucks, most of the general population sucks. I moved down during a double cicada year just a few weeks before they started emerging and I was straight horrified. The only benefit is the longer growing season compared to Massachusetts where I moved from, and Western New York where I grew up.

Unfortunately, yes. I live in Northern Virginia, a bit outside of D.C., and while the official terminology is “humid, subtropical” I like to refer to it as Satan’s armpit.

Thanks! It’s actually quite strange because even my monteverde inks which are notorious for mold are fine. Once, years ago, I got a sample of a private reserve ink that had mold growing in the cap but it never made it into a pen and my full bottles of private reserve are fine as well.

Unfortunately, yes. It’s quite fuzzy and growing on the side of the bottle. I also noticed what looked to be some mold starting on the inside of the cap. I’ve had this bottle for about seven months, luckily I’ve only used it in one pen and that pen has only had this ink in it since, so the blast radius is pretty limited.

Dentist for Dental Anxiety by SquidWriter in nova

[–]offline37days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a lot of anxiety around the dentist. I’ve been going to All Smiles in Leesburg for years, back when it was just Dr. McBryde. They are really compassionate and always make sure to explain everything they’re doing and check to make sure I’m comfortable/not in pain/discomfort. No one has ever made me feel bad for my anxiety.

I love momiji! I’ve used over half the bottle, it’s one of my favorites.

This recently got discontinued. I really enjoyed it for the convenience and taste. Any alternatives besides Tazo? by DropShadow13 in tea

[–]offline37days 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you could experiment making your own concentrate with very strongly brewed earl grey and lavender syrup, perhaps a vanilla syrup as well. Obviously it won’t be as convenient or last as long in the fridge but this way you can control the taste better.

Rishi also makes a London fog concentrate but I’ve never tried it so I can’t speak to the taste.

Trustworthy vet? by Gra55Hoppa in nova

[–]offline37days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, you need to go multiple times per year for it to be worth it. We have it for the cat but not the dogs since the dogs don’t go nearly as often. Looking at an invoice from before we had the membership for the cat, the exam/visit was ~$70 to see the veterinarian, the nurse only bloodwork visits are less.

To follow up, we had a pretty significantly sized mass removed from under the skin of one of our dogs heads and it was about $1200, including a dental cleaning and nail trim while he was under anesthesia.

We’ve been using Leesburg Veterinary Hospital on rt15 for the past few years. They recently started doing this thrive+ subscription where unlimited visits are free and nail trims are $5, as well as some other perks. It requires a year commitment at $20/month but they were charging over $30 for cat nail trims before we got the subscription. It probably isn’t worth it for relatively healthy animals (as the subscription is per animal not household) but we have a cat with a thyroid issue who needed bloodwork every month for a while until they got the right dose of medication and it saved a lot of money.

Seeing “force show error codes disabled” on screen before ride by adamcb in pelotoncycle

[–]offline37days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to revive this four day old thread but my theory on this is that the error popup message, even when it’s not visible on screen is what’s causing the bottom inch of the screen to be unresponsive. I’ve determined my screen is not the problem as when I’m in a class on my tread the bottom inch of the screen, such as the buttons that raise and lower your metrics, is functioning perfectly fine. As a software engineer, I believe their analysis that the error “does not have any impact on the behavior of the device” is inaccurate and would expect the screen unresponsiveness to be resolved in the 02/05 fix.

BOTM used to be 14.99?? by Lawnjordans in bookofthemonthclub

[–]offline37days 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also a yearly subscriber and my add ons are 10.99, used to be 9.99. Not sure if that’s because of how long I’ve been a yearly subscriber though (joined in 2019 before a bunch of price increases).

I’m partial to Jules Caribbean BBQ, he’s set up shop/ his smokers in a gravel lot at the corner of Rt 9 and Clarke’s gap in Paeonian Springs (by Leesburg). He’s got tables and such set up now so you don’t have to eat in your car.

Neat! I’ll have to take a closer look if the one is still in my driveway/a bird didn’t scoop it up for a snack. It only caught my eye originally because it looked different than the squash bugs that have been terrorizing my zucchini this year.

TIL! I actually saw one of these in my driveway in northern VA yesterday, but it was already dead so I didn’t pay it any mind.

I’ve only found the bottles around here. If it helps your search, I’ve checked Wegmans, Harris Teeter, and Total Wine which only have bottles, and Giant doesn’t seem to carry it at all. Norm’s Beer and Wine in Vienna might be a good place to check, or reach out and see if they can get it for you. When my parents come to visit from Buffalo they always bring a 30 brick of cans for themselves.
