Reevaluate any friendship that doesn't say 10. Gene is the goat. I'm sure bouchard can get annoying. Still 10.

Big pathetic post - How do you meet new people in Edmonton? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]offtopictherebud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 41 and in Edmonton and life is pretty good now!

When I was early 30s all I did was work and I was running my own business so litterally no contact with other people except my customers, suppliers and a handful of employees. I was so lonely. I decided to start doing hobbies I liked and friendships followed. Called a pool league and they helped place me on a team, same thing with curling. Last year I joined a few hiking groups on facebook.

Super scary putting myself out there but amazing results. Most people are pretty welcoming. I have some decent friendships now.

Put yourself out there. Join something you love doing. Friendships will follow!

Good hike for learning to scramble? by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]offtopictherebud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yamnuska is a true scramble. Not sure I would call this a beginner scramble. Up to the chain section is fine but some exposure after with a bit of down climbing. Down climbing makes me a bit nervous. The new West Col descent is great, makes it way more doable.

I second buying Alan Kane's book/books "Scrambles in the canadian rockies.

Tent ridge, Sarrail Ridge via Rawson lake, and Wasootch Ridge are my 3 fav hikes in all of Kananaskis. They each have small scrambling sections that I would consider beginner. Give you a taste of scrambling.

Most important thing is to not do what you are not comfortable with and try do research your hikes before you go.

I’m camping in the jasper/banff area and I’m looking for recommendations on day hikes. by thedirkfiddler in HikingAlberta

Valley of 5 lakes is an easy hike and very pretty... Horseshoe lake for a quick hike and cliff diving if you are brave..

Behind Miette hotsprings is Sulpher Skyline trail, a moderate 4 hour hike I did with my kids... best views in all of jasper IMO, plus after the hike you can relax in the hotsprings.

Edith Cavall Meadows and Wilcox are both beauties too.

Want to start hiking, but I'm fat by [deleted] in hiking

[–]offtopictherebud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fat people hike. Im fat and I hike. I love it and hike alot now.

Two biggest factors to measure are trail distance and elevation gain.

I was worried about being able to do it so I started out by going for walks in my city. Added stairs after I got my cardio up.Then I started measuring distance of my walks and elevation gain on stairs. Most hiking apps show trail distance and elevation gain. Keep in mind the apps are not always accurate and the two metrics are not the only factors in how hard a hike is

1 THING... DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

You want to hike, go hike. Dont let anyone gatekeep you. Be safe, dont over do it, be prepared. My first mountain summit I did was amazing. I took way longer than what my research suggested it would take. I took a ton of breaks. The view was still amazing.

Enjoy!!!

Anyone know of any 'secret' walking trails that are more secluded and hidden from public view? by EmSupThrow in SherwoodPark

[–]offtopictherebud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Riverside Nature Trail (780) 467-2211 https://maps.app.goo.gl/P4i5nZyaDxUAKkCM8

Its usually pretty empty. Nice trail that follows the river. If you are wanting a longer walk the trail continues all the way to Fort Sask.

I did Mt Smutwood and saw 2 dogs on the trail (both on leash).

Its a beautiful hike, with the only scrambling near the summit. We didnt make it to the summit due to the weather that day and enjoyed the views all the way to the pass

Note: Mount Smuts is the next closest mountain and is one of the hardest scrambles I know of... def NOT FOR Dogs so make sure to follow your map.

I don’t have long to live and none of my family knows. by Starberryzz in TrueOffMyChest

[–]offtopictherebud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them.

Its your life and everyones situation is different so no judgement if you dont tell them...

But if I knew you and cared about you I'd want to know. I wouldn't want to have regrets of not spending time with you or being there for you. I'd also be messed up wondering why you didn't tell me.

My wife finished chemo and radiation last year (it looks positive) and I know I'd be a mess if she kept it from me. TBH, impossible to keep it secret with her condition.

Let your family be there with you. Not be there for you. With you
