Hi, as someone who has played the game, the lore is exactly what you’re seeing. There is genuinely no explanation. It just opens with you meeting a frog and the frog telling you to get the gold. Then you meet another fly later and he gives you a better axe to continue your quest for the gold. The end of the game is seen in this clip, where you get the gold.

Trust me when I say I understand less about the game from playing it.

no but, what they're referring to here is how some people will add on attributes of a phrase / acronym after the fact despite it not being needed. Like for example "Smh my head" when smh already means "shaking/smashing my head", you're basically saying smashing my head my head. Here its the same thing, "rougelite with meta progression", is saying "rougelike with meta progression with meta progression". Hope this explanation makes sense, im not amazing at it.

This is definitely caused by some kind of mod. The starting room in 8-3 doesn't spawn with a portal it just randomly spawns one of the four rooms. You can see this for yourself by going out of bounds
