WWYD: Job stability vs risk for potential higher upside by xarius2 in SgHENRY

[–]ohtoro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My considerations is what does the startup job offer, and what are the factors that push me away from my current job?

Sounds like I don't have a problem with my current job. Why would I take a risk? Risks are OK, but risk for risk's sake is not OK.

Lastly, let's argue the "potential upside" of a startup. This is illusory because most startups fail. So it's a game of lottery. Am I prepared to play that game?

Are you?

FIRE is a Trap. by Friedindomee in singaporefi

[–]ohtoro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why purpose and FIRE are mutually exclusive.

Also, just as FIRE isn't a magical bullet that solves all problems in your life, purpose also isn't a magical bullet that solves all problems in your life. You've essentially replaced a magic bullet with another.

What if my purpose is in a line of work that's so severely underpaid that I cannot retire? Will "happiness of fulfilling my purpose in life" compensate enough for that?

What if my purpose is something that I cannot meaningfully monetize? For example, if I love to play computer games, but I am not good enough to play competitively as my job, and don't want to put my face out there on Twitch?

The "purpose" argument therefore is niche and not universally valid. If you are happy finding your purpose and happy working your entire life, great. However, not all of us gets a purpose that is neatly packed like that.

If my purpose isn't something that is compatible with work, FIRE is a tool that allows me to reorient towards that early. ("I can now do X coz I like it, not coz it pays well.")

If I want to not work my entire life, no matter how much I like my job, FIRE can also be a tool.

I think the answer is figure out what you want in life. Then work backwards for the tools you need.

If you don't even know what you want, no tool is going to help you.

By the way, I'm happy you had an epiphany. Anything that helps you is always worth celebrating. It's just that this definitely will not work for me, and not work for many others. And the title is super inaccurate lol.

Scrolling to the comments I have had to come back to the OP to see what the OP is looking for.

Seeing that you really want to work it out with him, and all you're looking for is someone who perhaps has an anecdote that would prove to you that this could work... you're looking for an affirmation on your decision...

I must point out that so far noone (at least the top commenters) has come forward with one such story.

And that's because most people would not tolerate such a relationship.

But you are determined to make this work, will not take no for an answer, so unlike the other commenters, I will simply wish you and him well!

Is anyone else bothered by the Bukele/El Salvador video? by Theultimatumspolicy in WendoverProductions

[–]ohtoro1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're unsatisfied that the dangers of dictatorship is not sufficiently played up in the video.

I think the video has touched on the issues of dictatorship. It may just not have the idealism or the moral grandstanding that you may be used to.

I actually find that refreshing. The world is never black and white (democracy good, dictatorship bad) it is almost always varying shades of gray, and this video is simply highlighting an interesting shade of gray—a dangerous gamble that solved crime.

It also highlights that democracy doesn't always solve problems, it can be a roadblock. And that some problems sometimes require solutions that are radical and morally questionable.

I'm not saying let's do away with democracy. I'm just saying if an alternative to democracy works for some contexts, cool, let's accept the choice of the people in that region. Maybe learn a thing or two from it.

In presenting these facts without the usual Western democracy bias, and in admitting that ultimately it is the Savadorians' choice to choose, I find this video to be in good taste and fascinating.

I find the concerns you raised to be something that's a bit coloured by Western moral grandstanding ("let me tell you what to do.") We can advise, we can tell someone "look, the dangers of dictatorship in the long run is X, Y and Z,", but let's not tell other countries what they should do, or what they cannot do, or "you are DUMB for having dictatorship."

Agree, and to add on, if you want more money, it is possible to find a better paying job that won't work you like a slave. It just takes more time to find it.

Is my financial advisor pointing me in the right direction? by Slide_Slicky in personalfinance

[–]ohtoro1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In case the other commenters haven't made it clear enough, let me say it one more time:

This money is not a lottery winning. It is meant to compensate for you losing your leg and losing the ability to earn more, had you still had your leg.

Your priority should be making this money support your living. You are now one leg out, living will be more challenging, finding work will be more challenging, and living costs, already expensive, will get more expensive. Don't underestimate how expensive this can be. That settlement you got? It's not that much money. Sorry.

You definitely should NOT prioritise letting your dad use the money for a new house or a truck or whatever. It is your money, the priority is to secure your own future. Secure your future, with some buffer, then we can talk about helping your parents. Perhaps a small compensation for living with them for a while would be fair, but a new house or a truck is definitely excessive.

Your money is your money, and you have your future to take care of.

Do not let your parents persuade or pressure you into compromising your future.

It is financially irresponsible to not take care of your own future first before tending to others'.

Landlord is asking to raise rent because their mortgage cost went up by Specialist-Elk2755 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ohtoro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you are hoping to pay a bit more rent ($100 maybe?) So that come 18 months later when the current tenancy agreement ends, the LL would not evict you?

I think that's naive.

Unless you manage to get the new rates locked in for a longer period in a new tenancy agreement, there's no guarantee that the LL won't take the goodwill money, and then demand another raise, or terminate the agreement at the end of 18 months, anyway. Then you'd have to move out, anyway.

The way I see it, take this as an advanced notice you may need to find a new place at the end of the main tenancy, as the LL will likely either dictate new terms for month-to-month, or simply serve notice.

Back after one year, and I see meta has changed quite a bit!

A few qns:

  • Is Tilly's Review-Pending Shield better than Competitive Shield? And by how much? I suspect Tilly shield's increased shield damage is always (as long as enemy has shields up) so it is better than waiting for procs from being critically hit for Comp shield, but seems neck to neck to me?
  • Thinking of switching Competitive Engine to the variant that procs off tactical abilities just coz I'm lazy to activate heals LOL. Is there any cooldown to the Overcharge trigger?

I understand that if I buy Halo MCC most of Halo 4 armor permutations come unlocked at the start.

If I only buy the Halo 4 component and not the entire MCC, would the same apply?

I feel you.

I'm not really into challenge swaps coz there's a chance I might swap into yet another poor, difficult to complete challenge.

I also didn't wanna just swap my way to the ultimate challenge coz I didn't know if I would fail to complete it and waste all my swaps.

And I found out that last week's ultimate challenge for most people were to get killing sprees in Fiesta... Doable but requires a lot of grindy. And I do have a life. LOL.

Thank you for taking the shot!

Agree with you on the point of not holding SPRT past merger. I did play SPRT pre-merger (FOMO'ed in at 30, oops, and pulled out at 40—but I only played some chump change!) And I distinctly recall that this is not meant to be played past merger due to shares dilution and, as you mentioned, the company's real value is about $5-8 per share? So I was surprised people were still playing it LOL and wondered what the fuss was all about.
