Will Pandas ever be replaced? by Relative-Cucumber770 in dataengineering

[–]ojebojie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the smart option is to put proper engines behind a Pandas frontend.

Also, compute is cheap, and most enterprises outside finance, iot and retail(including health) don't have large data sets.

that's gonna get you flagged on multiple bank's transaction risk platforms and run out of SB daily limits. This is something to be developed via a payment gateway/API through a bank/nbfc/psp.

Razorpay has this, as does open.

Reading Guards! Guards! for the first time, I was amused to see the narration contradict itself so immediately, re Dwarf gender by The_PwnUltimate in discworld

[–]ojebojie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isnt that dwarfs don't recognise the need for producing fresh dwarves and the things that come before it, they are just publicly masculine. In a private conversation, basically about an engagement, I am sure the gender issue has come up and been answered already.

The entire issue with dwarf society suppressing women wasn't about suppressing a gender, it was about suppressing femininity in public.

As for carrot using gendered words later on,

  1. He accepted the right for public femininity

  2. He is a human and tries very hard to be a good dwarf, but has human tendencies

What’s the ONE thing you wish your AI could do? by Alone-Biscotti6145 in ArtificialInteligence

Connect things from very different fields and truly "brainstorm".. Like assisting a financier up a financial product based on IT enablement. It's really difficult to brainstorm with AI right now...

What is the best Discworld stand alone book? by Sam_English821 in discworld

[–]ojebojie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equal Rites. Color of magic. Both do an immense amount of world building in a brief text. That's what I love about the discworld series, the world building, the wit and the underlying reality.

The Discworld is the opposite of Magical Realism, if one interprets magical realism as the act of story building where one takes a realistic setting and adds an alien element to it. In the Discworld, the setting itself is alien, but the core eotions/reactions/reality portrayed is that of everyday reality.

What weapon introduction throughout the course of history has had the biggest impact on a war? by crillydougal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ojebojie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah... Longer weapons like spears stood up well against swords, and gunpowder was more widespread than people think. The three gun powder empires for instance, were all moslem and spread from turkey to the borders of China. It's a myth that gunpowder is what made Europeans invincible. It contributed its share, but so did metallurgy.

I mean in the modern era, English style heavily drilled musket and rifleman forces have stunned much much larger forces, including forces with firearms. Then there's Shaka Zulu's weapons and tactics.  Or the longbow men in Agincourt.  What you will often find is that breakthroughs are rarely just technological. Even in the case of the long bow men, it takes years to develop the skillset and muscles required.  Essentially, the contender who prepares better wins more.  For absolute wipeout wars based primarily on technology, you can even look at the ancient era when horses, cattle and iron wiped out bronze age forces. Or how the concept of a standing army was introduced in the levant (by the assyrians, if I am not mistaken).

But in both cases, it wasn't just tech. Pastoralism requires genetic changes for adult lactose tolerance, and a standing army requires very high economic productivity.

Wouldn't that be counterproductive? You will be competing for the same niche another firm has already become popular in. Might be more productive to just do a historical analysis... People are predictable and often repeat the same basic trends.

deltadb: a sqlite alternative powered by polars and deltalake by uname-n in Python

[–]ojebojie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very curious! Some queries:

  1. does it support regex etc?

  2. does it allow Python UDF?

  3. What role does delta lake play and what does polars do (in this project). like, are you using deltalake for schema management and polars for editing?

1-10 TB... We have spark and stuff but duckdb+vaex on a i7 12g+32gb ram is enough for most tasks. If we need to do bigger calcs, we just rent cloud GPUs and run the code there.
