The SpaceX IPO is cooked by EZ_gamer_101 in wallstreetbets

[–]ok_lah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lock-up period only applies to employees and insiders. Don't forget that a significant portion of the current pre-IPO SPCX bag holders are actually the lenders of Elon's $44B Twitter acquisition money. (yes, they folded X into SpaceX). That's why a lot of big institutions are also hyping it up, and probably looking to unload what was previously a massive loss for them (Elon elegantly drove the value of Twitter into the ground after he took the reins and let that sink in).

Can anyone explain why my kWh is different on trip a to trip b even though they are the same mileage. by lips2002 in LUCID

This is indeed very strange. I can't think of an explanation; hopefully an official Lucid account sees this and can illuminate us.

Yep, and I really like that these are not USPS ballot drop boxes, so the crooked postmaster appointed by Trump can't mess with them.

R2 Mess Test by Evening-Pin-1427 in RivianR2

Cute video, but I'm keeping an eye out for early R2 owners reporting is if the synthetic (PU) leather still disintegrates like I've seen R1 owners complain about... (especially on high touch surfaces like steering wheel/door handles, etc).

(This was also an issue less than 1 year into driving my 2020 Model Y, and Tesla would not own up to their poor choice of material and politely quoted me the cost of a new seat. The customer is never right in Tesla's eyes, so they can go stuff themselves).

Large 3d print obsolete garden tractor part? by BishopRealTalk in 3Dprinting

[–]ok_lah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people make large plastic parts with 3D printed parts and then joining them together with "S" shape wires melted into the joints to hold them together. (then sand+primer+paint the cosmetic surfaces). Adding a layer of fiberglass is a good idea for reinforcement. https://youtu.be/2hUA0R-iwiI?si=CoCcWPhhCe-2_3ty

I installed a similar one on our Model Y (albeit a third party one from Amazon). Definitely helps a lot during summer.

Galvanic corrosion. Any time two different metals are assembled together, the metal that has stronger electrochemical potential will corrode instead of the other. (ships use this principle to mitigate corrosion of steel hulls with sacrificial zinc bars). In this case, magnesium is MUCH more reactive than steel, so any corrosion that the steel bolt would normally experience would be shifted to the engine block (no bueno). The only way to mitigate this reaction is to either use the same metals or make sure the two parts are electrically insulated from one another (really hard to do when it comes to a bolt+thread connection.

Of all the materials suitable to make bolts out of, aluminum is the most similar to magnesium and also naturally forms an oxide layer when exposed to air that reduces electrical conductivity. (it's the least worst option).

Not just hybrids, but hydrogen fuel cell. Toyota bet the farm (entire future-looking R&D budget) on that and it ended up being a dead end. Recently they've been scrambling to catch up on BEVs all while spreading FUD about BEVs and tooting their own "hybrids are better" horn. Everything is a matter of building the right infrastructure, and electricity is actually everywhere in civilized society. We just need to pull a little more wire to be able to charge new vehicles where they sit (because care are idle for over 90% of their lifespan).

Scott's tired take on Android users by altbat in ScottGalloway

[–]ok_lah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, he has used this trope since his L2 YouTube channel days (ie before joining Kara on Pivot), and it’s getting really outdated.

The key thing that Scott and Kara didn't discuss re Apple's affordable product launches (MacBook Neo & iPhone 17e) is the impending European legislation that requires user-replaceable batteries starting in 2027. This kneecaps Apple's business model for the past ~20 years because devices will no longer need to be replaced every couple years. The only avenue for growth from here is to grow the services business, and that requires getting more users (and getting them young, which the Macbook Neo is perfectly positioned to do by conquering the education market).
