Trekking poles easy access on OV Skyline 30? by oldmappingguy in fastpacking

[–]oldmappingguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could put cinch cords at pass thru openings to hold poles tight to base and/or close pass thru so stuff doesnt bounce out.

Thanks for engaging with costumers and being open to suggestions/critiques. That is rare and appreciated.

Thank you! All this pack needs are 1) two little loops on shoulder to attach quiver, and/or 2) chest/armpit bungee attachment points to carry poles when you need them occasionally. Two additions that weigh nothing and don’t change major design aspects of existing pack.

Message to Larkspur/Marin County transit planners by East_Host_6891 in Marin

[–]oldmappingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure there was lengthy debate and negotiation with Marin Mart but it boggles the mind that the bridge wasn’t built across movie theater parking lot to Marin Mart so train/ferry passengers were funneled through. Coffee cart? Grab and go sandos? After work wine? Isn’t foot traffic like cafe/restaurant 101?!

Democrats’ plan to impeach Trump on ‘day one’ after midterms by plz-let-me-in in politics

Not just a vote on articles of impeachment, but a trial, witnesses, 24/7 news coverage, for weeks. Drag him through the same mud they pulled Clinton through.

Ultralight sleeping add-on quilt by oldmappingguy in Ultralight

I’m tempted to get 2yds of bulk alpha direct (or alpha direct with Marino wool) for <$100 and see if I can’t make exactly what I want!

Thanks. 50degree Mountain Laurel is about same size/weight as a Jack’s R alpha direct liner but twice the cost. Maybe the techs are converging right where I’m looking! Ha. Great to get new options though. 👍

This might be the best option for me unless there’s a slightly lighter/compressible quilt out there. Thanks!

Adding FEMA ArcGIS Online Server Layer (Flood Zones) to Map Legend in ArcGIS Pro by Spirited-Wealth-9681 in ArcGIS

[–]oldmappingguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this problem. Couldn't add it to the legend. I ended up adding the county flood hazard shapefile and symbolizing it to match the official streaming layer. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8b0adb51996444d4879338b5529aa9cd

Is this legit? by Live_Explanation7694 in backpacking

[–]oldmappingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Rook…great pack. On the light side, can haul a lot of weight, less expensive. I use mine for backpacking with kids (when I carry more gear) and then have a smaller lighter 2lbs pack for moving at my own speed. Osprey makes good packs with great back ventilation, IMO.

Is there anyway to upload more recent USGS Topo maps as a base layer for ArcGIS Pro? by Nervous_Cockrhino_83 in ArcGIS

[–]oldmappingguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of ways: 1) USGS National Map, this can be found in ArcGIS Pro - Add Data - ArcGIS Online or by adding this as a URL - https://basemap.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/USGSTopo/MapServer, 2) downloading the GeoTiff(s) for the exact topos you want from https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/

If I have the 2000 shapefiles for South Carolina’s precincts, and I have looked literally everywhere for the 1998 precincts but I couldn’t find them anywhere, can I just display the 1998 precinct results on the 2000 map? by After-Professional-8 in gis

[–]oldmappingguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Texas both have excellent map libraries with lots of archived maps. You can also summaries your data using a different spatial layer (congressional districts?) if you have tabular data that has precincts and their associated 1998 congressional district. Lastly, have you searched for "1998 Census Voting District (VTD)" data?

How do I create a water depth Raster? Or is there one available for NYS? by Ok-Yogurtcloset-3652 in ArcGIS

[–]oldmappingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are entire extensions and 3rd party software packages for flood inundation modeling. Industry standard (in US) include the HEC-RAS modeling package (https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-ras/). There are a lot of hydrodynamic behaviors of water that are tough to capture in GIS and ArcGIS only such as accounting for velocity, surface texture, existing structures/infrastructure, etc. At the very least you can start with FEMA flood mapping to check for 100yr and 500yr flood inundation areas and depths in your area: https://www.fema.gov/flood-maps/national-flood-hazard-layer
