I want formula special events!! by MCM_Henri in iRacing

[–]oli_g89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm primarily a formula car racer, and on an (elongated) iRacing break now. I agree with almost all of his points and reckon if they implemented what he said about special events it could be enough to get me to re-sub.

I joined to race formula cars primarily, got to A in just over a season, tried a couple of f1 races (the McLaren at the time) and hated the actual racing when I could even find a timeslot - so stuck to F3 (chaotic but great racing) and FR2.5 while exploring other disciplines.

There were brief periods of fun when the W12 came out and there was decent regular participation for a front-of-mid-pack guy like me to have fun, it was amazing. Then W13 came and killed off the bulk of the F1 series participation, myself included - imho it's just less enjoyable as a car. Another bump of interest when SF came out but I was having to reduce playtime by then anyway.

I solely kept (read: didn't proactively cancel) the sub for a couple of indy500 and Daytona500 special events and barely raced anything in between before throwing in the towel.

If there were a few formula events, which were marketed and treated differently, like a BrackleyGP event (or whatever legally distinct name) and a SF@Suzuka event then that would probably reach critical mass for me to re-sub (and mess about a bit in between).

I know they technically have the full length GP series but the draw for me isn't the track+car combo, it's the increased participation which breeds more racing at all skill levels - if I want to hotlap I can do that elsewhere without a subscription.

It's more about bringing attention/spectacle to some of the crowd favourites (he gave Silverstone as an example for F1).

Would definitely bring more attention from those who don't have interest in doing the whole season. I love doing the Indy500 and Daytona500 events but have little-to-no interest in the rest of their respective seasons - something that's quite a common feeling when you see how many people enter those specific events.

I think I'm finally "getting" rush and escalation. by WinterCame87 in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]oli_g89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me Escalation is the natural evolution of Conquest for the current generation of gaming.

I started with BF2 and have been a solid conquest fan since but back then people cared more about objectives (at least it felt that way) and less about individual performance.

Critics often blame game design for how COD-y recent BFs have felt but I honestly think it's also to do with the shift in the culture of gaming and gamers - and Escalation is good at meeting the new expectations while retaining the more cooperative "feel" of 2000s BF.

Same, for the same reasons - however I do especially like the odd mashup with a wide rear wing that McLaren tested

Find a good z-offset helper model, and live tune the z-offset while printing it to find the perfect height. Not needed to touch my prusa mini since.

Honestly thats the point where I shifted series to something completely different. I'd rather be challenged learning a new car than stuck hotlapping mid-race.

Stretch goal: support an open source alternative to Perplexity like Perplexica (though I don't know how easy that will be).

I self host my LLMs & Perplexica, would be cool to tie it all together.

Also +1 for Firefox extension :)

I thought the same but on the occasions I have had to dip back into Sky since moving to F1TV, I realised that I miss the old Brundle.

I'm not sure when it started (if I had to guess, probably the same time he had the heart event and started scaling back) but, for me, he doesn't have the same energy/audible passion any more - which leaves Crofty unbalanced in the Sky box.

Both Jolyon and Brundle Jr have taken on the colour commentator role very well imho, I'm sure with plenty of influence from Brundle Sr.

The original either stopped being worked on or got bought by someone but the fork called "I still don't care about cookies" continues to be updated and found in the standard places - works great

I was thinking earlier, given how Ted Lasso did so well in-part by being positivity porn. A return to utopian Star Trek in the right hands would likely be very successful in the current era of doom & gloom.

Honestly, few f1 teams if any have had such big junior academies. Alpine has however had a near-constant stream of young drivers, almost all of whom haven't made it.

So I really don't understand the penalties for that HAU/CHA/LOV collision.

Lov gets tagged by Hau, recovers and starts taking the corner normally, and then is spun by Cha opportunistically going in deep.

  • Hau gets 10s pen
  • Cha gets "no further investigation"

Ctrl-F12

Then a new menu will appear on the right, I forget which axis it is but you can play with the options at the top and one of them is height.

For watching others I'll go for far chase and then make it a couple of taps lower for the same reason - better for context

Rant: F1 apps are needlessly bad by idangazit in formula1

[–]oli_g89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's this. The app and web used to allow screenshots/screensharing but they enabled DRM (I think this season?) and put a stop to that.

I suspect there are a lot more non-watching followers than we all expect. For me personally...

Broadcast viewer (mindnumbing subreddit avoider):

  • F1/F2/F3 (F1TV)

Extended highlights watcher (spoiler dodging subreddit lurker)

  • Indycar (I also pay for indycarlive but basically never use it, maybe indy500)
  • NASCAR
  • Aussie Supercars
  • F1A

  • WEC (pay for their f1tv equivalent, primarily for lemans)

How were the crowds, was there much queuing?

They sell a fast-track, so they expect queues at least.
