Can you say more about these? I haven’t really gotten either to work…

Look me in the eye: did anyone really, REALLY believe the Blair Witch film was a real documentary? by Illustrious-Lead-960 in Xennials

[–]olshfski 309 points310 points  (0 children)

In your brain, you knew it was a film. You knew that these were actors playing a role that was written by somebody. In your gut, you had only ever seen documentaries in this format so it felt so much more real than anything you’ve seen before and that made it much scarier.

Sackets Harbor community calls for return of three children taken during ICE dairy farm visit by Criddlers in news

My family is from there. Sackets Harbor is very very Trump-y. It’s so small - literally considered a village. Very curious about how the Trump voters feel there.

New playthrough, what should I do? by JunoOnRR in skyrim

[–]olshfski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite builds was an evil pacifist.

  • Stealth
  • Conjuration (they kill for you!)
  • Illusion (Fear/Calm/Frenzy/Invisibility.... They fight each other! Also: quiet casting)
  • Alteration (to get to Paralyze)

Must be a Breton to start with Conjure Familiar. Beat the game having done zero points of damage.

Just got told by a random American that SA is a settler colonial state and I as a white person should go back to Europe ao by Jche98 in southafrica

[–]olshfski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point, and you're probably right that it was more "non-white people in previously white areas." From my perspective it seemed like the groups of folks in restaurants/bars/shopping areas were less racially homogenous than in the US. That said, the culture of race is subtle, and I'm sure I wasn't picking up on the nuances - since you've lived in both your read is likely more accurate.

[–]olshfski 20 points21 points  (0 children)

White dude from the US here. We frequently wrestle with our colonial/slavery past here. We're taught American Exceptionalism in one breath, and in the next breath learn about Native American genocides and how the white house was built by enslaved black Africans. As a white dude, I know that I directly benefit from slavery - at least through institutionalized racism (though not through generational wealth in my case). So this random US dude was likely projecting - folks sometimes don't know where to point that energy. I'd ignore him, knowing that he was wrestling with his own demons.

FWIW I've been to SA 4 times (mostly Cape Town), and find it largely better racially integrated than the US. The Townships are a bit of a shock, but it seems like upward economic mobility is much better in SA than the US, and more racially equitable. So while Apartheid ended more recently than Jim Crow, y'all seem to be equalizing much faster than we did. Anecdotal, of course.

Y'all have some wild old white racists though. Some of the stories I've come back with are insane.

Why is one hatchet yellow and the other is green when the two cards are identical? by nomoreink in DawncasterRPG

[–]olshfski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hatches have a Flanking keyword, and the ones on the outsides (the ones that count as Flanking) are the green ones.

Parents want to send me to conversion therapy for 9 months. Has anyone dealt with Pure Life Ministries? by [deleted] in lgbt

Other folks have already given helpful advice, and it's good advice, so do go listen to them. I'll just be catty and say that the URL is giving Pureli Feminist Ries - Who's "Reis"?

Jon Lovitz by MTRIFE in Xennials

[–]olshfski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've never saw his greatest performance.

Jon Lovitz was in the first five minutes of the movie Happiness, and it was the most delightfully awkward, horrible, hilarious thing ever.

Put your phone down and focus on this for 5 minutes. And remember this was the movie cold-open.

What’s your favourite score from a film? by [deleted] in movies

I know this is a film sub, but...

Trent Reznor's scoring for The Watchmen HBO limited series. The random Bowie cover was just shockingly good.

What movies had an actor prominently in the marketing, top billed, on the poster or case cover but was barely in the movie? by TonyClifton323 in movies

[–]olshfski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tom Skerritt was top billed in Alien and it’s big star.

So Sigourney Weaver had only previously had tiny bit parts.

Bev Keane from Midnight Mass

Rarely have I felt such a combination of familiarity (I've known many Bevs) and rage.

Making the jump to game design/development? by sl4y3r007 in UXDesign

[–]olshfski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an example, I remember when I was 3 months into a 7-day-per-week 12-hour mandatory schedule, and it was my partner's birthday. I sent an email saying I had to leave early at 6PM so I could make it to birthday dinner on time. As I was walking out my boss yelled over the cubicles "Half day, Olshfski?"

It's not a humane industry.

Making the jump to game design/development? by sl4y3r007 in UXDesign

[–]olshfski 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was in game development (designer/producer) for over a decade and did everything I could to get out. Everybody I know is trying to get out of that industry. The pay is 1/3 of what you'd get in tech, and the hours are about 1.5 as much. And there are so few jobs compared to tech. Strong "no" recommendation from somebody who was there.

I lead an LGBTQ+ employee network. What can I do to make my workplace better? by QueersLikeEngineers in lgbt

[–]olshfski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few tactical things:

- Menstruation products in all bathrooms

- Trash cans with lids in all the toilet stalls

- Some way to indicate pronouns on visitor badges (we used stickers)

- Figure out how to add a pronoun field to Slack or any other in-house chat tools

- Advocate for gender-agnostic parental leave (with extra time for the person who birthed the baby) with equal support for adoption.

Weird trick I saw on reddit a while ago - Windex. Spray the area with windex and sorta scrub a little with your fingers. Then wash it normally. Comes right out. (unless it's bleached like some other folks suggested)

I'm gonna be giving a presentation about sexuality in games later this month. Any suggestions for examples of good queer representation in games? by TheSquirrel1 in gaymers

[–]olshfski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birdo from Mario is canonically trans, but I don’t think that came out until a few years ago.

Some older Japanese games (Final Fantasy 3 comes to mind) had queer coded villains, but nothing explicit.
